About Me:Since graduating from Colgate University in 2016, I have taught in a variety of settings, working with students from several different age groups. I spent one year as a special education teacher for 2nd and 3rd grade students, and four years as a physical education teacher in early childcare. My favorite thing about about working with students is being able to help them realize their own potential. While I love being able to transfer my knowledge and skills to potential students, I am genuinely amazed when I have the opportunity to help someone grow in their self-confidence.My Teaching Philosophy:Learning is not merely a process of rote memorization and regurgitation of facts. It is a dynamic process in which an individual, with a unique personality and learning style, attempts to understand and integrate new concepts and ideas. As such, my teaching style emphasizes the importance of the individual's personality. I start by meeting a student exactly where they are in their learning process for a particular subject. We work together to identify their unique learning style (visual, auditory, kinesthetic, reading/writing, etc) and from there, use their strengths to deepen their understanding of challenging concepts. It is my belief that anyone can learn challenging concepts if they keep trying. This belief underpins all aspects of my interactions with students and encourages them to believe this truth about themselves over time.Favorite subject to tutor:Math! I love tutoring math because it is a challenging subject for a lot of people. I love tutoring math because it is incredibly rewarding to help students understand that even though math can seem really challenging and confusing, it is something that anyone is capable of learning if they spend enough time working on it. I love helping students build their confidence over time in a subject that, to them, seemed previously impossible to understand. What I tutor:-Math-Reading-History-Science-Javascript-HTML/CSS

As an educator and professional writer, I'm passionate about helping students from all academic backgrounds develop confidence in their verbal skills. I earned my MA in English from Rutgers University, where I graduated with a 4.0 GPA and distinctions. I've taught and tutored students in English Composition I and II and remedial writing. I also scored in the 98th percentile on the GRE writing section and the 92nd percentile on the GRE verbal section. As a teacher, I strive to meet the unique needs of each student. While such individualized practice applies to all pedagogies, it is even more important in the area of writing and verbal skills.Effective educational practices are grounded in evidence-based strategies. Nonetheless, teachers must be prepared to meet the unique needs of students, taking into account their abilities, areas of weakness, and personal motivations.Too often, students come away from academic experiences with a diminished belief in their capacity to achieve. Teachers need to be honest with students about their current skill level. However, feedback must be given in a tactful way that recognizes the student's inherent abilities, unique talents, and potential for change. In the classroom, I believe teachers should emphasize a growth mindset. Writers and life-long learners aren't born. They are taught through skill building and practice. Thus, feedback on student writing must be individualized. When students receive one-on-one attention in this way, they can develop confidence in the teacher's dedication to their success, and more importantly, their own potential. Tailored feedback provides an achievable action plan for student improvement.Students can go anywhere for automated, generic information. Increasingly, free, open-access courses from organizations like Coursera provide the same knowledge students get in the classroom. However, students enrolled in college-level courses or tutoring deserve individualized, tailored feedback.I'm excited to work with you!

I'm an expert SAT tutor.I have over five years experience tutoring this test and over 15 years teaching experience, and I get great results from the index card method.I show my students how to make custom index cards from all of the problems that they've missed on the test. The cards allow them to re-confront the questions which they missed on the practice tests, again and again, until the ideas and understandings that form the solution become integrated into their current skill set.Complete explanations, which I review with them, point by point, are printed on the back, first by me, and then, by imitation, by them. I stress the quality of each of these seemingly obvious steps, because the effectiveness of my method depends upon all of them working together. I insist on a minimum of three problems reviewed in one session and focus on the student adopting the method of short, very frequent review of the material, throughout the day. This technique works! Ambitious students will use this method in whatever they choose to study in the future, so the techniques they learn in my little SAT bootcamp is well worth the money.

In 2022, I received my PhD in Planning and Public Policy from the Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University and currently, I am an Assistant Teaching Professor at Drexel University. I am looking to supplement my income by online tutoring. I am highly qualified in American Politics, and Quantitative and Qualitative Research Methods. I have been teaching at universities in Russia and the United States since 2005. I taught at Rutgers from 2017 to Spring 2022 while pursuing my PhD in public policy. Rutgers, University of Delaware, and Drexel are universities with diverse student bodies, and so I have extensive experience connecting with a wide range of students. I am mentoring college and PhD students formally, via Independent Study classes, and informally. I have extensive experience teaching online, both synchronously and asynchronously. As a former international doctoral student who comes from a low-income family, I am personally aware of the challenges that international students face in the United States. Having overcome these hurdles makes me even more committed to helping minority students to adapt to American academia. I have a strong track record of addressing diversity in my classroom. First, I do my best to provide all instructional materials within Canvas, namely, students who take my classes do not have to purchase expensive textbooks. Second, to help students of different levels to understand course material, I do scaffolding assignments that build on each other. For example, in my "American Presidency" class, throughout the semester I asked students to find opinion articles about various aspects of a particular public policy issue, which could be integrated into bibliography for a final essay. Third, I help my students to build confidence with peer discussions (one student wrote in his evaluation that he for the first time in his college career stood in front of the class and talked freely). Fourth, I work to model effective discussion of controversial issues. Fifth, once I had a class comprised of mostly Chinese students with limited English. To address the situation, I took a workshop at Rutgers on teaching international students. To be able to communicate effectively, I spoke slowly in the class, and I asked students to do the same.

I earned my BA in English with honors from Rutgers University. Exploring the interrelatedness of literature, history, medicine, and psychology (my senior thesis examined the role of seasonal affective disorder in the works and lives of Emily Dickinson and Percy Shelley) engendered in me an understanding that no area of academic study exists in a vacuum and that an important aspect of teaching (and learning) is to find the places where academic areas intersect and inform one another.I studied mathematics after college, and before my recent move to Washington, I served as an adjunct math tutor for five years at Indian River State College in Vero Beach, Florida. I love helping people dispel the belief that they "can't do math." One of my favorite compliments given to me by a college algebra student was that I explain concepts "like a person, not a mathematician," and that I "can break down ugly problems and make them easy to solve."While in Florida, I also taught middle grades language arts, algebra, and geometry for nine years at a small alternative school. My pupils learned the most from lessons and projects that related life experiences to math and English. A favorite was our restaurant business plan which incorporated math through recipes and blueprints and English through restaurant reviews and resumes. I really enjoyed creating and teaching our ballroom dance club in which members learned history, culture, teamwork, and the power of music and movement. The end of each semester culminated in exuberant performances of rhumba, swing or merengue. I laughed with and learned from my students every day.As a private tutor, I have helped dozens of students improve standardized test scores, fine-tune college entrance essays, and succeed in tough classes. Perhaps more importantly, I have helped them eliminate some of the anxiety that has become prevalent in traditional education. I hope I have given them a desire to learn and a belief in their abilities. My students know that we have a partnership; we are in it together, and I will do all I can to help them reach their goals. My other interests include wildlife rehabilitation, ballroom dancing, surfing, running, and reading.

This approach not only deepens their understanding of the subject matter but also develops their problem-solving abilities and instills a lifelong love for learning. I believe everyone should have a chance at a good education, regardless of background, as this is key to a better, healthy future. As someone who sometimes struggled on my journey due to financial or a language barrier, I feel passionate about paying it forward to future generations to attain their goals. I graduated with a master's in biomedical sciences from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey; prior to that I received my bachelor's degree in biology, with a minor in Spanish from Rutgers University. While in college, I had several part-time tutoring jobs, with students ranging from 4th grade all the way to first year college students. Most of the focus was on reading, math, and sciences, mostly biological concepts such as anatomy and physiology, genetics, and ecology. As a native Spanish speaker, I have also assisted with those students and colleagues learning the language, it's nuisances and culture, as well as assisted ESL students learn English and U.S. culture. I currently work at a local university in the Philadelphia area, as the lab manager for the biology department. After graduating from Rutgers University in Camden, NJ with my Master's degree in English, I taught at Williamstown Middle School for two years, and then at Livingston School in New Brunswick, NJ for three years. I worked with sixth through eighth grade students at these schools and learned the value of strong classroom management and differentiated instruction. While successful in my positions, I felt that there was even more that I could learn about being an effective teacher, as I never had the opportunity to student teach. Therefore, when I was offered an opportunity to shift to the New York City charter school system, I jumped at the chance. The three-week training program for Achievement First schools taught me more ways to manage my classroom and differentiate instruction, and also taught me how to create very effective lesson plans, the true value of purposeful assessments, and how to generate those. I even learned how to properly analyze my students' results in order to determine which skills I needed to re-teach and which skills I simply needed to review. When I shifted to Bushwick Ascend Middle School, not only was I able to continue with my learning of how to become an even better teacher, but I was also given the opportunity to be a Grade Team Leader, where I evaluated other teachers' lesson plans, and provided those teachers with feedback about their lesson plans and their actual lessons.Due to personal reasons, I chose to remain closer to home and began working as an Adjunct Professor at local colleges. Working with college students for two years showed me that I truly wanted to be back in the classroom full-time. Therefore, I accepted a position at Columbia High School as a one-year leave replacement within the English department. I taught ninth and tenth grade English, where I focused on writing instruction and assisting the students in preparing for the PARCC exam. While I enjoyed teaching at Columbia High School, I found my place at Maria L. Varisco-Rogers Charter School in Newark, NJ teaching seventh and eighth grade Language Arts and Writing.
