I moved to Virginia about a year and a half ago after being a Californian for most of my adult life. I received a Bachelor's Degree and teaching credential in English from San Diego State University and went on to teach 7th and 8th grade language arts in a diverse public school. I then moved north to beautiful Sonoma County where I completed a Master's degree in English literature. During my time as a graduate student, I began teaching freshman composition classes and worked with small groups of beginning writers, many of whom were the first in their family to attend college. I stayed on as an adjunct instructor teaching courses that focused on expository writing, analytical reading, research, and oral communication skills. Over the course of my 15 year career, I have worked with students from a variety of backgrounds and skill levels, including many students with unique language or learning needs. I have served as an adviser and scorer/rater for numerous written assessment tests (including district and state assessments from elementary through high school, and college entrance and exit exams), and am very familiar with the type of analytical and persuasive writing prompts that students are asked to tackle for such assessments. Despite my extensive experience with argumentation and expository texts, my first love continues to be fiction and poetry, and I would jump enthusiastically at the chance to work with students in the world of literature and creative writing. I believe that students learn best when they are invested, active participants in the learning process, and my job is to listen and guide rather than lecture. I come to our tutoring sessions with a virtual "sackful" of strategies to help you work through challenging material, and by listening, observing and motivating, I can help you access the tools that will be most compatible with your learning style.

I began my love for music at a young age, when my mother enrolled me in violin lessons. The search for a voice that fit my inner music was long, but worthy. I dabbled in other string and woodwind instruments throughout my adolescence, but settled on the bassoon upon beginning high school. I taught myself how to play the bassoon initially, but thrived under the direction of Valentin Martchev at San Diego State University, where I completed my undergraduate degree in Bassoon Performance. I am currently in my final year of my master's degree at Boston University, studying with Valentin's former teacher, Nancy Goeres. I am comfortable teaching all age ranges and beginner to intermediate experience levels, and have had significant experience doing so throughout the years with high schoolers, colleagues in college, and most recently grade schoolers. Though my passion is bassoon pedagogy, I am also fascinated by music theory, and have taken several extra years of it throughout my education. I offer a sensitive but motivated approach, and emphasize quality instruction and rehearsal over quantity. I look forward to connecting with new students, whether they be bassoonists or theorists!

Although I earned a B.A.in English from San Diego State University ,I have received and continue to further my education from a large, diverse group of dedicated, caring,often brilliant instructors. From elementary school through the secondary teaching program at Cal State L.A., and on to many esteemed colleagues I've encountered in the teaching profession, it is my good fortune to have been influenced and molded by an impressive parade of scholars. The foundation of my education was built by my parents, who not only instilled in me a lifelong love of reading, taught me always to treat all people with kindness and respect.While I feel at home as a tutor in history, social studies, and lower level math,I am at my most qualified and effective when teaching any facet of English Language Arts. Whether it be providing suggestions for polishing an essay, navigating the intricacies of a great piece of literature, expanding vocabulary, or merely brushing up on grammar and spelling, I just want to get to the heart of my students' needs, and make the learning experience a positive one. I retain my affinity for most sports, major or minor, team or individual, as participant and spectator. I freely dispense baseball metaphors. Once in a while I connect with my muse to write some excellent, yet still unpublished poetry. I enjoy cooking, and look forward to entertaining family and friends on special occasions. I am an avid concert goer and collector of recorded music; I love all genres and eras. This often results in my creating compilation mix-tapes on a variety of themes. Of course, I'm trying to find the time to read the great books I haven't yet read.

I am currently a medical student at the Loyola Stritch School of Medicine with a bachelor's degree in Biology. I truly enjoy all aspects of science from the theory behind the present world to the applied sciences, such as Medicine. As such, I hope to spread the excitement of science to any student I work with. The subject is conceptual and the conclusions often are not obvious and require focus and attention to reveal themselves. When a student is learning and making connections, I have the utmost patience and demonstrate multiple ways to arrive at the same conclusion. I have done extensive tutoring of grades K-12 and also tutored Biology and Chemistry to many of my peers in college. My goal with everyone I tutor is the same, to build an understanding and appreciation of science.

I am a graduate of San Diego State University and am a current attendee of graduate school in occupational therapy in Boston, Massachusetts. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. While studying for my bachelors degree, I tutored young adults working to receive their high school diploma in San Diego. My name is Guadalupe Medina, I graduated with my B.A. in Public Affairs with a minor in Communications from The Ohio State University. I then attended San Diego State University where I obtained a Masters of Arts in Liberal Arts and Sciences.I have worked with students for over 6 years as a tutor and a teacher. I began working as a tutor while in college where I discovered my passion for teaching. I then taught High School English, went to San Diego where I was a T.A. and writing fellow. As a T.A. I taught classes for undergraduate students, and provided academic support. As a writing fellow I reviewed, graded, and tutored students in writing. I have also taught Spanish in La Jolla, and Elementary School in Nevada where I worked with a high ELL population.

I am a Native Spanish speaker, born in Mexico. Cynthia is an energetic and passionate educator, who has had a love for teaching since she was young. She attended Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, where she earned a B.A. in History and a B.A. in English and American Literature. There she also completed a History Teacher education program for grades 5-12. Cynthia has taught history and ESL, and tutored students in many subjects and for tests such as the SAT, ACT, and AP exams. As a college student, I understand what it takes to excel in education. I enjoy tutoring others because I was once was a young child being tutored by many people for subjects in math and language arts.
