I recently moved to New York City following my graduation from Santa Clara University in the Spring! At Santa Clara I earned high marks studying both History and Music and was elected as a member of the Historical Honor Society during my senior year. While in school I focused upon East Asian history, but I am well versed across a variety of historical subjects from around the world. Over my high school and college careers I have become confident and knowledgeable in additional subjects such as US history, European history, Middle Eastern history, African history and Latin American history. My passion for history is driven by my desire to know as much about the world and its vast amount of different cultures and societies as possible. With this understanding of the past I feel comfortable in analyzing modern day situations and how they came about or even can be solved. More importantly, I feel like one of the major components in establishing a progressive and competent worldview is comprehending people and places which are incredibly foreign to myself. By putting myself out of this comfort zone I feel like I grow as a person each day.Additionally, a major aspect of being a history major is crafting a fine tuned ability to read and write in a critical and analytical manner. Thus, I will also be of assistance in subjects such as English (composition and literature) and essay writing and editing. I would be glad to help you with attacking a term paper or preparing an essay test starting from the ground up. I will walk step by step from the primary research to the creation of your first thesis all the way through the conclusion paragraph and final edits. When writing a paper structure is key and I would be happy to help provide the necessary stability and guidance to drive you towards your best work. Finally, my passions outside of the academic world mostly revolve around music. I am an aspiring musician and can play a wide variety of instruments from guitars to synthesizers to xylophones and everything in between. I am a "bedroom producer" and write, record and produce all of my own music in my apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. I also perform shows around New York City both as a solo act and as a band. In addition to music I am also a soccer fan, dog lover, and have been skiier and snowboarder since I was two years old. I look forward to meeting with you so we can both learn through this process!

I am a newly retired educator. I have recently moved from Bellevue, WA where I taught 5th grade. I enjoy working with students - watching them learn and grow is a very rewarding experience for me. I want to become a tutor because I really miss working with students. I look forward to working with students and families on building academic success!
I have been doing online tutoring in physics for over seven years and have been teaching for many years. I have a degree in Physics from the University of California at Berkeley. I worked at Lawrence Radiation Labs in Berkeley as well as Lockheed Aerospace Division before starting a computer consulting company (40 plus years). I have worked for many years as a computer consultant including managing large networks, doing cybersecurity and various types of programming especially iPhone and iPad development using Swift and Xcode. I also have a horticulture degree and have taught organic gardening at the middle school and high school levels. I am currently tutoring students in AP Physics (AP 1, AP 2 and AP C Physics are my specialties).
I am a recent graduate of Santa Clara University in California, where I received my B.S. in Biochemistry as well as a holistic education in environmental science, sociology, and public health (to name a few). I am currently in the process of applying to dental school (2020-2021 cycle), and look forward to converging my passion for mentorship, hands-on involvement with people, and community service into my future career of dentistry. In light of the long application process, I am taking a gap year to fuel my love for education and making an impact on my local community. My mentorship experiences include, but are not limited to: academic advising and DAT-prep for the SCU Pre-Dental Society; Lab and Teacher's Assistant for Biochemical Techniques, a lab-based capstone course for SCU Biochemistry students; teaching oral health prevention to underserved families via The Health Trust in Silicon Valley; and private tutoring in High School in the subjects of biology and trigonometry. My background in STEM has strengthened my knowledge in chemistry, biology, and math (trigonometry and calculus specifically). As for my teaching style, I believe in sustainable improvement - which comes with commitment and organization - and I assess my success as a mentor by my students' ability to move forward with the material independently. I am very patient with my students, and strive to empower every individual regardless of their background, experience, and learning barriers to gain confidence in accomplishing their academic goals. I am committed to accommodating my students' needs as best as I can.In my spare time I enjoy hiking, long road trips with my friends, and more recently have picked backed up my passion for painting. I currently live with my family in Georgia, and am flexible to tutor both remotely, and in person. I look forward to the opportunity to work with you!
The most useful tools in my teaching arsenal are patience, humility, and a hefty dose of humor!Much of my teaching experience thus far has involved working directly with students who have a wide variety of learning differences. My teaching philosophy revolves very much around the idea of helping students "learn to love learning," which is achieved by empowering learners of all ages and abilities to understand their own unique learning styles, and thereby capitalize on their strengths while also building up the areas in which they feel less able or confident. In my teaching approach I place a high value on multi-modal and authentic instructional methods. These principles combined help students receive and review information from a variety of different angles and approaches, while also attaching relevance to content by connecting it to their everyday lives.
In June 2017 I retired from a career in semiconductor engineering, sales, and marketing. Along the way I volunteered as a math tutor for several organizations. This was very enjoyable so I am continuing through Varsity Tutors.
I am a graduate of Santa Clara University, which is a prestigious university with high academic standards. My major was Business and I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree.I am passionate regarding two subjects, and both involve numbers (Algebra and Accounting). My philosophy in learning is to initially have a broad understanding of the material. The question needs to be asked, what is the purpose of these concepts and what is it going to tell us. Knowing definitions and how these concepts interrelate are like the border of a puzzle. The next step is to go through problems, so you start getting a more detailed understanding to fill in the gaps and the rest of the puzzle. Between the initial understanding and the more detailed problem solving, should give the student an ability to think their way through a problem.I am very patient and know how uncomfortable it is when you're not understanding something. My objective is to clarify those uncomfortable moments and bring things to light. I will sit with a student for as long as it takes to ensure they understand a particular concept. I will also attempt to explain concepts in different ways to help a student learn.Other accomplishments in my career include obtaining a CPA license and being conditionally accepted in the MBA program at the University of Texas. During my college years, I had taken several math classes including College Algebra. On the GRE exam, which is the national graduate school entrance exam, I ranked in the top 6% on the math section. The GRE is similar to the SAT exam only harder. In the past several months, I have studied and reviewed several Algebra books and the Las Vegas school system Algebra syllabus to bring myself current and up to date.Thank you
As a secondary high school English teacher, I'm well-versed in teaching students with a wide range of skills and learning styles. I graduated with Honors from Santa Clara University where I received my Bachelor of Arts in English with a specialization in Teaching English. In May 2015, I will graduate with my Masters in Educational Studies from the University of Michigan. I am passionate about teaching students to become critical readers and writers who use their communication skills to reach their goals and connect with others. I have over seven years of tutoring experience and have tutored students in reading and writing from middle school to the graduate level. While teaching English is my passion, I've also studied Spanish for over ten years and even lived abroad in Barcelona. I engage students with language using teaching methods that first interested me in studying the language — through multimedia, culture study, and conversation, I enjoy teaching students not only how to master the language but also how to love the language itself. I also have a special place in my heart for helping clients prepare for tests like the SAT, ACT, and GRE. From personal experience, I know these tests can be intimidating and anxiety-inducing; I would love to help others prepare to tackle test anxiety and difficult test questions! When tutoring, I seek to engage and challenge students while also providing a safe atmosphere for students to take intellectual risks and explore their curiosity. I think the best teaching methods are built on modeling thinking strategies — that is, if students can learn how to think in different ways, they can transfer the critical thinking and study skills they've learned in one subject to master others. I love teaching, and I am passionate about helping others learn. In my spare time, I enjoy photography, creative writing, watercolor painting, and playing guitar. In warmer weather, I also enjoy rock climbing and camping.
My name is Kendra , and I am in love with learning. I have always loved school. In 2002, I earned a BA in Spanish Studies, and in 2011, I earned a Master's in Teaching Special Education. I took my passion for learning to the classroom and started my career as a special education teacher in the resourc e room. I loved working with students to show them that math could be fun AND understandable. I also worked as a 5th grade teacher, teaching all the required subjects in both English and Spanish. I look forward to working with you!
School and learning new things have always been my favorite part of life - which is probably why I stayed in school until I was 30 years old! My Bachelor's degree from Santa Clara University is in Art History with a History minor; my Master's degree from UCLA is in Medieval History with a focus on Latin and French; and I earned the Juris Doctor (law) degree at UC Berkeley. I later returned to school while working as a lawyer so I could learn more new things in my spare time (a few classes in Spanish at Caada College and graduate courses in Theology at Xavier University). And I even brought math workbooks home to have some fun with numbers and problems.Sharing my enjoyment of learning is my passion! Tutoring students is the best way I have found to share what I love about learning with others who are also learning, to help them be the very best student they can be and reap the personal rewards of their successes. It is my fondest wish for all students to genuinely enjoy their time in school, to find fun in learning new things and feel great about themselves when they put the time and attention in to do their very best.Over the years, I have tutored middle and high school students in Math, French and Latin. I have also worked with young elementary students as a volunteer at an after-school homework club and a summer reading program. It's tough to pick a favorite subject to tutor but I think it's languages (French or Latin), with math a close second. Learning another language can lead to so many interesting things in life, it is so worth the effort! And math always has that satisfying right answer. :)What I seem to be best at as a tutor is helping students break down material into bite-sized chunks that they can understand, apply and master. That lays a strong foundation for what comes next which, again, we break down into manageable parts before putting them together to see the whole in good form. The lighting up of my student's face when things that seemed difficult or mysterious, perhaps even overwhelming, come together in a way that makes sense to them puts a gold star on my day every time!

Upon graduating from Santa Clara University with a degree in Global Cultural Studies and completing my thesis work on the social and economic effects of coffee production in El Salvador, I was impelled to return. I took a position in San Salvador, counseling mothers on their role in their children's education. I became aware of the socioeconomic gaps and injustices within their society and dedicated myself to working alongside families to better their situations. These experiences abroad deeply impacted me and directly influenced my career path. I obtained my certification in Teaching English as a Second Language and was able to provide an enduring skill for the futures of my students. Teaching English to language learners has allowed me to develop my own curriculum and learn how to engage both adults and youth in their own learning processes. This involved advocating and encouraging my students to invest in and have a say in their own communities. From my previous work experiences, from teaching to social service positions, I have learned that being a teacher is not just teaching the basic subject matter; it is being a mentor, a reliable and accountable person to youth and to all ages. These lessons and insights I have gained influence the work I do as a Tutor.
I enjoy helping students build confidence in chemistry, physics, and the ACT. I just finished up my sophomore year studying biomedical engineering with a 3.99 GPA. While at school, I am a peer tutor for general chemistry, organic chemistry, and physics 1. I love getting to know my students and helping them out with their unique concerns. I have a very problem-based teaching philosophy where we work through lots of practice problems together. I can't wait to meet you! Let's connect!
As a former high school and middle school Science and Math teacher at a private school in California, I believe that every student deserves personalized learning. Every student is unique in their learning style, their needs, and their personality and I strive to make sure my students uniqueness is celebrated in my teaching style.
I am a motivated undergraduate student and with a passion for learning. As I pursue a degree in bioengineering, I have been able to gain a deep understanding of many STEM classes including algebra, calculus, biology, chemistry, and more. Teaching brings me joy after teaching dance classes to students from the ages of two to twelve. My goal as a tutor is to help a student learn the "how" and "why" something works, rather than just memorizing a topic. I believe empowering the student and building their confidence is also vital for them to reach their goals.
