I am currently a fourth grade teacher and have been teaching for five years. This upcoming school year (2016-2017) will be my sixth year in education. During my career, I have taught pre-k, kindergarten, third grade, and currently fourth. I discovered that teaching was my passion as a young child. I can remember always wanting to play school with my friends.I believe every child has the ability to learn. Some children learn in different ways and at a different pace. I always try to instill in my students the ability to never give up. I always tell my students that saying the words "I can't" is not an option. The words "I can't" are simply not allowed. I try to make learning fun and interesting. I have always found that students tend to hate what they cannot understand. Patience is definitely the key when working with children. I believe that children can achieve and conquer any subject area with the right support. I am here to help, guide, and support as much as I can.
I am a graduate of Savannah State University and Armstrong Atlantic State University. I received my Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with a minor in teaching and my Masters of Art in Teaching Secondary Mathematics. Since graduation, I have taught high school level math courses 6 years in Savannah, GA. and 5 years in Norcross, GA. While I tutor a broad range of math subjects, I am most passionate about Algebra 1. In my experience helping struggling students prepare for tests, we always seem to have the most fun when the student relaxes and realizes it is okay to make mistakes because that is where you learn. I am a firm believer that every child can learn given the right environment and support.

I feel the 21 st century student has a plethora amount of resources that can allow him or her to excel in college-readiness courses, academic rigor, and life skills. I enjoy the fact that I can give students an opportunity to work independently, with a partner, group, and with me during teacher-led discussions. My gumption also allows me to remain persistent, patient, and willing to help my students in many ways. I use visuals, manipulatives, and hands-on activities to increase engagement at all times. I look forward to working with you and your child so we together can enhance strengths, increase reading levels, fluency, vocabulary knowledge, and reading comprehension scores. I am ready to dive in and soar with your child. Thanks Shelia I have had an extremely high success rate for helping potential teachers and current teachers with their certification exams for FTCE, FORT and Praxis exams for the subject areas Reading and English.
Be Great Today because tomorrow is never promised! As an educator, this is something that I tell my students every day! "Don't forget to be great today"! I've been teaching for 10 years but I've been in education for 15 years. I started coaching girls high school basketball and was offered a teaching opportunity. From their I've taught special education inter-related, resource math, general math, science, and math enrichment. I received my undergrad from Savannah State University and my master's from Grand Canyon University. If there is one thing I've learned from teaching is that students are more willing to try for the teachers they like. You have to be relatable and relevant to ALL of your students needs. I make it a goal to build a relationship with my students and their parents. Building a foundation with all stakeholders helps set the tone for a successful school year! I look forward to learning and growing with you!
I currently have a Bachelor's of Science degree in mathematics with a minor in computer science technology. I have been tutoring mathematics for five years. I also taught in Cypress Fairbanks Independent School District for two years. My teaching/tutoring style is very positive, encouraging, and most of all motivating. Students need to be motivated and need to gain a positive attitude towards mathematics. Most of the time, students fail to realize that a positive attitude is the key to unlock the potential that rests inside the students of today. Once students unlock that potential, their boundaries will be limitless. I will help guide them to enhance their potential so that success will happen. Thank you and have a great day!

Just a little about my background...My experience as an educator began in 2009 where I taught high school science (Biology, Physical Science and Environmental Science) for seven years in the Atlanta Public Schools system. I also had the opportunity as a new biology graduate in 2008 to work for the Centers of Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia as a Research Assistant within the Influenza Division. I currently reside in Orlando, Florida where I am studying to become a Registered Nurse. As you may gather, I value education and SCIENCE :)... as a former teacher, I know that people learn concepts differently. With my experience I will ensure you that your student or self will be challenged with pedagogy and rigor with patience.
