I'm a recent graduate from Vanderbilt University, where I obtained my Masters of Education in Learning and Design, and a Bachelors degree from Southwestern University in Education and English.As a young student I found tutors to be immensely helpful in achieving success, so I know how important finding the right fit can be. I have experience tutoring, teaching, and mentoring students from ages 13 and up- though most of my recent experience is with college students.My favorite subjects to tutor are English and History, because I believe those are subjects where it's easy to help students find themselves within the subject matter. I help students who struggle with math by closing gaps in their learning and helping them understand difficult concepts. I have a Master's in Education and have been teaching math for over 7 years.

I am a graduate of Southwestern University, where I received my degree in art history and am currently pursuing my master's of library science from the University of North Texas. I'm so very interested in helping students because it is my ultimate pleasure to help people learn and see them enjoy what they are learning. I have a fair amount of experience with students (generally children): I have served as an education intern at an historical museum, mentored middle school students, worked at a children's museum, and taught children of preschool age all the way up till eighth grade. The subject in my tutoring repertoire is art history (specifically preparing for the Advanced Placement Art History exam). I particularly enjoy tutoring this subject because I am so familiar with it. As a high school student, my interest in art history was piqued because of a great teacher, so I'd love to cultivate the same feeling in my students. I think when it comes to any subject, a student will benefit most if their instructor is able to relate to them and make the material relatable. I consider that to be my general approach when it comes to teaching. In my spare time, I enjoy reading and watching movies.

My interest in tutoring arises from a love of learning and a background in education. I received my Bachelors degree in Theater from Southwestern University and am earning my Masters degree in Education from Texas State University. I grew up on a small farm in Central Texas, the third daughter of the vocational agriculture teacher at the local high school. The realities of chopping cotton and farm work in general instilled in me the strong desire to excel academically, so that I could get off the farm. With no internet or cable (back in the day), I read...a lot. Scoring a 1470 on the PSAT as a junior earned me a National Merit Scholarship. Going to state UIL in science ( I placed Third) led to a Welch Scholarship and a required major in Chemistry at college. I also majored in Math and graduated from Southwestern University with a 4.0. I then also scored really well on the GRE and the Chemistry GRE, which earned me a National Science Foundation Fellowship for graduate school. I received my PhD in synthetic organic chemistry from Texas A&M University in 1984, married a fellow PhD chemist and went on to work in the chemical industry for the next 30 years while raising two daughters through orchestra, dual credit, AP courses, SAT's, ACT's, GRE's, PCAT's and MCAT's. Having two daughters really brought home to me how much I enjoy teaching. Throughout their educational journey, I tutored them and their friends, revisiting all the math, chemistry, physics, biology, and English subjects I had ever taken. Teaching is in my blood, so to speak. Both of my parents were teachers, so I grew up seeing both sides of the process, as well as helping to grade papers. I was given an early opportunity to develop my own skills in teaching when I started college. Since my undergraduate institution,Southwestern University, had no graduate program, undergraduates were used as teaching assistants. As a freshman in college, I was immediately given a job teaching the recitation section for the non-technical general chemistry class, which was known among the students as "Kitchen Chem". While it was unusual for a freshman to get a job as a teaching assistant, this was an even more unusual situation, for, not only was I essentially giving the review lectures for this class, I was also writing and grading the multiple choice exams for the professor. Thus, early on I was given a high level of responsibility and autonomy. The professors for my own classes at Southwestern University were superb, imparting not only a rigorous understanding of the subject matter, but also, at the same time instructing me in the subtle arts of teaching. As a sophomore, I taught the freshman chemistry lab for technical majors, quantitative and qualitative analysis. As a junior and senior, I was teaching the organic chemistry lab. In graduate school, I continued teaching labs: general chemistry for majors, chemistry for non-majors, organic chemistry for the technical majors (engineers and pre-meds), and organic chemistry for non-majors (affectionately referred to as Cowboy Chem). In addition to supervising labs, this included writing quizzes, grading quizzes and reports, and assigning grades. Toward the end of my degree, as I was finishing up my dissertation, a need arose for an organic lecturer, and I was hired to teach a full load of organic chemistry for the technical majors, two classes of ~100 students each, along with supervisory responsibility for multiple lab sections. I taught for a year and a half before taking a research job in the chemical industry. While there, my teaching duties continued with group meetings, safety presentations, research presentations, and new hires, not to mention helping the kids with homework and tutoring friends, neighbors and their kids when help was needed in chemistry, math, biology, or physics. Now that my kids are mostly launched, I've decided that it's time to apply my teaching skills to help other parents and their kids.

My name is Belle Jo and I have been teaching Chinese with a public school district for two years. I graduated from college with a degree in political science at 20 years old, hold a certification in Intermediate-Advanced Chinese from the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages, and received a Critical Language Scholarship from the US Department of State to study intensive advanced Mandarin in China in 2015.Studying and teaching intensive Chinese has helped me learn how to lay down the fundamentals of a subject and build on them, what topics in a subject to focus on and why, and how to teach students using teaching styles other than lecturing. After all, thanks to my experience teaching with the public school system, I know that one size doesn't, in fact, fit all. For students to learn at their best, a teacher must be flexible and ready to adapt to their needs. Whether it be teaching a language or teaching a mathematical concept, learning should flow in a natural, logical order for every student. In this way, I strive to cater to my students' academic needs as much as possible. Having been dropped into China with only two years of Mandarin under my belt, I understand how intimidating learning can be. I want to make learning a natural, logical process for my students.My hobbies include writing (I've been working on a novel for 10 years), audio engineering for live theatre, and building computers.

I am a Biology major from Southwestern University. I have always loved studying biology because I love to understand how life works; whether it be a cell, human body, or an ecosystem. I'm a graduate student at UT Austin's LBJ School of Public Affairs, currently pursuing my master's degree in global policy studies. I have a BA in political science from Southwestern University. After graduation, I studied Mandarin Chinese for a year in Taiwan and then went backpacking through China.I can help you learn basic Mandarin Chinese (1 and 2), walk you through your political science studies, or bang out a killer essay. Hello! My name is Hessa Curtis and I am a current undergrad at Southwestern University studying for a BA in Psychology. I graduated 37 in a class of 829 from Duncanville High School in 2012 and was a member of the 2011-12 Academic Decathlon Team. Some of my achievements in this team were a 7380 Regional Score as well as medaling gold in Physics, Super Quiz Combined (social sciences), Music, and Language Arts, Highest Scoring on Team. We continued to the State level where I medaled Gold (Perfect Score) in Interview at State level and Highest Scoring Team Member.These were some of my greatest achievements academically and they were achieved by some great teamwork. This experience taught me how to learn things in new ways. Often times we had people who were more experienced in one area teach the class what they knew. We would work together to go through source materials and highlight important facts, peoples and dates and stay after school taking quizzes and assessments as well as building our own lectures to review what we had been taught.Having gone through an intense year of learning a lot of information in one year for a competition was something that showed me many different types of teaching styles as well as study techniques that ultimately made for the transition into college much easier for me. I feel confident that this experience will make me a great tutor and already has as I've tutored members of my team and have participated in Operation Achievement in the spring of 2014. I am an undergraduate student at Southwestern University currently pursuing a degree in education so I can teach middle and high school history. I enjoy teaching, storytelling, and talking with just about anyone.I love teaching because I enjoy helping people feel engaged with History, Government, and all aspects of life. I believe the subjects that I teach can connect to anyone and the best way to do so is through low number classrooms or independent lessons. I graduated with my B.A. in Education from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas. I have taught both math and science in Texas public schools for the past six years. I have tutored students both one-on-one and in small groups since I was in high school. My tutoring specialty is middle school math, Algebra I, and of course SAT math (because it's lots of middle school math!). Algebra I is my absolute favorite subject to teach and tutor - I love how it is cumulative and you keep using the skills you've learned for the rest of the year. I believe that understanding math is based on a student's skill ability. Just like a musical instrument or sport, it becomes a lot easier the more you practice it. Once you invest the time and gain understanding, math becomes fun like a puzzle! Outside of my math world, in my free time, I love to hang out with my lab, Cooper. I also enjoy reading, yoga, and swimming.

I currently teach all levels of high school French in Alamance county. I recently received my Masters in French and Francophone Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where I taught undergraduate French courses in addition to pursuing my own coursework. As a tutor, I work with students to develop their weaknesses and let their strengths shine on their current material. Furthermore, I strive to better prepare my students for the next level and seek to lessen the chances of them becoming disheartened and pushed away by the difficulty of French in the future.
