I am a graduate of the University of Virginia where I received a BA in History. While in college, I spent time tutoring local elementary school children in math and reading. Additionally, I worked for the university helping student athletes craft and edit papers for history and political science courses. After graduation, I completed a two year post-baccalaureate program in the pre-medical sciences (Bio, Orgo, Gen Chem, Physics). During this program, I continued tutoring students in subjects as diverse as writing, biology, and physics. I also started privately tutoring for the verbal section of the SAT at this time. I love trying to make challenging material more interesting and comprehensible. Any subject can be understood if the material is presented in a manner that a student finds relatable. After my first year of medical school, I spent the summer working as a Gross Anatomy teacher for PA and PT students. This was hands down my favorite job and I became very invested in my students success, often staying far later than required to ensure my students were confident with the material. In addition to teaching, I act as a motivational coach for my students. I am their biggest supporter and will do my very best to help them achieve success. In my spare time, I enjoy playing basketball, lifting weights, reading books and magazine articles, and watching movies.

Discovering how you learn is as important as the actual subjects you wish to learn. I believe that my students best succeed when they develop an awareness of their educational strengths and weaknesses. I believe in emphasizing healthy study routines, the courage to learn from failure, and an openness to change.Like my students, I expect that I will also learn from my practice and refine my teaching style. I am currently in Graduate School completing a dual degree MD/PhD program in Neuroscience at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. I am a graduate of the Brooklyn College BA-MD program, a program that guides students directly into medical school at SUNY Downstate. I have taught Biology, Chemistry, and Physics at various levels ranging from high school to college and graduate levels, and currently teach numerous classes in my medical school. I have succeeded academically due to my personal philosophy on education: I value complete understanding of material above all else. I am a continuous learner and I strive to teach that to my students. Once a subject is truly understood, tests will be easy, and great grades will follow. With this mindset, I have become talented at understanding where a student's problems with subject matter lie, mainly because I have probably experienced the same issues when I started learning these subjects. Now, I feel confident in passing on my knowledge to other people, and I feel that my last seven years of teaching demonstrate my ability to do so.

I earned my BSN from SUNY Downstate in NY and am currently working as an RN. I also have a Bachelors in Sociology and Psychology from Hunter College. I enjoy tutoring anatomy/physiology, pathophysiology, and NCLEX test prep. I remember being a nursing student and studying for the NCLEX like it was yesterday. I am a PhD student at SUNY Downstate Medical Center studying Molecular & Cellular Biology. I graduated from Columbia University with a Bachelor of Arts in Biochemistry. I love to teach, mostly because of the impact of great teachers throughout my academic career. I think learning can be really fun, if teachers think outside the box and really challenge themselves to find novel ways of conveying concepts to students. Tried and true methods are always great in the classroom, but to work one-on-one with students requires a different approach. It's also critical that learning be something students want, not grudgingly sit through, so that their academic success is tied to their ability to understand and engage the material, not to what score they get on an arbitrary test.
