Hey there! My name is Sam. I grew up in Teaneck, New Jersey, but Philadelphia is now my home, and I could not be happier about that. I am very passionate about education, both in and outside the classroom. From my sophomore year of high school, I knew I wanted to be an educator. As a recent graduate of the Temple University College of Education with a double major in Secondary Social Studies Education and History, I now have the requisite training to fulfill this longstanding dream of mine. No matter the subject, I am a dedicated facilitator of learning who will work my hardest to help students achieve their learning goals. My long term goal in education is to earn a doctorate degree and teach teachers. My philosophy of education is centered around facilitation. I believe my role as an educator is to be a resource for students as they work towards their learning goals. With my training as an educator, my responsibility as a tutor is to identify where students might be struggling and find creative solutions based on empirically proven methods. By the end of each session, my goal is for students to feel as though their perspective is empowered, while being closer to achieving learning goals than we began. On the personal side, I love to explore Philadelphia, especially the food scene, as well as listen to music, watch and play sports, and read non-fiction. I love supporting my alma mater, as a I am a football and basketball season ticket holder, and I serve on two alumni boards. While I enjoy learning about history of all sorts, my favorite subject is pre-Civil War politics. My biggest influence in education is Russell Conwell, the founder of Temple University. In his famous Acres of Diamonds speech, he said that "I do not request a larger garden, but finer seeds." It is this dedication to the foundations of teaching and learning that I bring most to the table as an educator.

To start, I am a mom and I love spending time with family and friends. I enjoy biking (bicycles), cooking new meals, scrap booking and going out to lunch or dinner with my friends. I also advocate for children who are not receiving the proper services in the school system. I am passionate about children receiving what they need to be successful from the school system. Academically, I have earned three master degrees over the years. One is in business and the other two are in the field of psychology; School Psychology and Educational Psychology. I have spent a number of years working in the public school system as a school psychologist. I thoroughly enjoy working with children to help them achieve a level of success with their academics. I like to use a multi-model approach to tutoring which includes your typical paper and pencil work, computer based learning tools, hands on strategies and discussion based learning. I believe for a student to remain engaged and active in their own learning they have to enjoy it to some degree. The teaching has to be interesting, engaging and have some level of fun tied to it. The teacher/tutor needs to know their student(s) and what their learning styles are in order to create the most effective strategies. I believe a reward system is very helpful for students who have a very low level of motivation to do their school work. It can be a very simple system which does not require spending lots of money, if any. I thoroughly enjoy working with children with special needs and various learning disabilities. My background is in the field of special education and I am well versed on a variety of interventions that prove successful with students. I have worked with students at all levels and have learned that a one's confidence level plays a large part in their success. When one feels confident about themselves and their ability to learn the material they seem to progress a bit quicker than those who struggle with self-confidence. I will help to build your child's self-confidence as they learn. It can be a fun experience and something your child looks forward to instead of dreading doing their school work. I look forward to working with you and your student(s).

I am a graduate of Temple University. I received my Bachelors of Science in Biochemistry. Since graduation, I traveled back home to the British Virgin Islands to be with my family and to give back to my home community. For three years, I taught at a private secondary school focusing on 11th and 12th grade biology, chemistry and mathematics as well as 10th grade Integrated Science. I have tutored various students in statistics, algebra, trigonometry and geometry but my passion is teaching biology and chemistry. I believe that the true goal of education is to build intelligence and character. I always look for the best in my students. I make learning fun by using the best approach in a given situation to boost the learning capacity in my student. One of my greatest and proudest accomplishments is that after teaching and prepping my students for the Caribbean Secondary Education Council, a two year process, they were all able to attain 100% passes. I received a Bachelors of Arts in Biology and a minor in Public Health from Temple University in 2010. In May of this year, I received a Masters Degree in Biological Sciences from Drexel University. During my time at Drexel University, I worked as a teaching assistant for a graduate level Anatomy course for a year. This included assisting students with cadaver dissections in gross lab, and tutoring students for the didactic portion of the course. Anatomy is not only my favorite course to tutor in, but also my favorite subject in biology. I find I never get bored teaching Anatomy, because even though we all have similar basic anatomical structures, no two bodies are alike. Although I am very passionate about learning, I make sure all my students have fun. During a typical tutoring session, I try to incorporate videos, textbooks, and models to help the student stay engaged. I make my sessions interactive in hopes of creating an environment where students can learn the material in a style that is most effective for them. In addition to Anatomy, I also tutor Physiology, Biology, General Chemistry, Physics, and elementary math. When I am not working as a tutor I love to travel, play music, and spend time with my friends.

My mission is to help students learn ways they can nurture themselves in areas they desire tutoring assistance and ultimately build the self confidence and self-efficacy to teach themselves. I have earned a Bachelor's Degree in music, studying bassoon performance and music theory. The journey to reaching there at first involved an attempt at a degree program in the science field, a gap year filled with self-discovery, and many bumps in the road. Coming from a Vietnamese immigrant, low-income family, I grew up learning how to make the most with what I have and how to strive to be better each day. I have always had a passion for helping others be excellent. I have tutored subjects from algebra to English writing to music theory, and it is a process I truly enjoy. Through tutoring sessions tailored to a holistic approach of students' abilities, my hopes are that they will leave sessions knowing they deserve the absolute best for themselves, and that they have the internal grit and drive to achieve their goals. My desire is for my students to leave sessions with me feeling comfortable with who they are, knowing I am an available, supportive resource at all times and feeling ready to take on whatever challenges they face. My vision for tutoring at Varsity Tutors burns with that same enthusiasm.

I studied English Literature and Theatre at Temple University. I have years of experience as a writing tutor at Temple University, where I worked with graduate and undergraduate students in all majors. I enjoy tutoring because, since I did well in school and am confident in my own writing/reading/grammar abilities, I find enjoyment in passing along any skills I have acquired to someone who is struggling or who simply wants to learn more.I believe that the most effective way to improve is to work collaboratively with the student. I am there to guide the student in their work, while directing them in discovering the ideas or correct answers themselves. Being a creative person really influences my style as a tutor, as I can adapt to any challenge easily and also can incorporate one or multiple strategies as is needed in the session. My goal as a tutor is to help the student become an independent learner. The best way to become a better student is to learn how to think on your own and to creatively search for solutions. This goes beyond merely correcting assignments and feeding the students the "correct" answers. Please contact me if you need help in any of the subject areas that I specialize in!

As a Peace Corps volunteer in Costa Rica, I spent two and a half years teaching students of all ages how to get and remain interested in learning. My experience working in an elementary and high school taught me that every student is different and there is no better way to engage a student than to be able to study with them one on one. Finding out their learning styles, and mutually developing an effective learning strategy helps both the student and myself succeed in achieving the goals of the student. I have experience tutoring students from young elementary children to adults with very little knowledge of the subject. I have the personal benefit of going from knowing very little Spanish, to becoming fluent, because I spoke Spanish everyday for two years with people who were native speakers. I know the methods it takes to effectively learn Spanish in a way that will make it a second language rather than just memorizing vocabulary and conjugations. I look forward to working with students of all types and will work hard to achieve the goals set by the student.

Language is a fascinating thing to me and it would be great to explore it with you! I am TEFL certified and studied Media Communications in college. I lived in Thailand for over a year teaching English as a second language (ESL) in classrooms, to individuals, and to small groups of ALL levels including children and adults. Living there, I experienced and came to understand the many rewards and challenges of learning a new language. What I remember most about being a beginner is the feeling of vulnerability when first trying to speak the language. That is why what is most important in my lessons, is that my students feel comfortable to be themselves in order to learn most effectively! There is no need to fear making mistakes on your journey to mastering the English language. Getting to know each student's strengths and areas for improvement is very necessary for me as a teacher. Since moving back to the USA I have worked informally with many non-English speakers, giving me experience with creative ways to exchange language. There are many interesting ways of communicating through media, visuals, gestures, and activities that can be used to learn or improve a non-native language. My teaching style is very adaptable to the student I am teaching, while still keeping structure. Everyone learns another language for their own reasons and in their own way! When beginning ESL lessons with me, you can expect to discuss your goals first so that we can choose to focus our time on improving speaking, writing, or a specific project you may have in mind.

After nearly forty years as a trial attorney, it is time for me to move to a new phase of my career. Education is not really a ???new phase??? as trying a case to a jury is primarily an educational activity where the classroom is the courtroom. More than anything, a lawyer trying a case is a teacher.Additionally, having taught in a classroom, I know the profound rewards of inspiring older and younger students to become more than they were before they entered. Teaching is about the future. Each student with whom I work gets a learning program specifically geared to his or her needs and goals. As we work together, those goals and needs may change and the student and I will adjust accordingly. The way a student learns best is as unique as their fingerprint and that is the way my instruction is developed for each student.

i graduated from the University of Delaware with a Bachelor of Science in Education. I also hold a Master of Education in the Psychology of Reading from Temple University. I am certified by the state of Pennsylvania as a teacher of grades K through 8 and as a reading instructor . I also have certification as a teacher of preschool, Pre-K, and K from the Pennsylvania Department of Private Academic Schools.I have enjoyed teaching all levels, preschool through fifth grade, as well as in special education classes. My experience has been with entire classes, large groups, small groups, and with individual instruction.Elementary school reading skills(phonics, fluency, comprehension) and elementary school math skills are my favorite subjects to teach. Because success with social studies and science concepts depends on effective reading skills, I enjoy teaching those subjects as well.I have especially enjoyed working one to one with students, because each lesson can be totally structured to meet that child's needs. During this past summer, I tutored a student via Zoom, and the experience was very rewarding for both of us.I am passionate about helping children achieve, grow, and gain confidence in a positive and supportive learning environment.I pace each lesson according to the student's needs, using the modality or modalities (auditory, visual, kinesthetic, tactile) that work best for her, so that the end result is a feeling of accomplishment, not frustration. If a student is having difficulty with a concept or skill, I'll say, "This one is difficult, so let's try another way!"To help maintain a positive momentum, I remind the student, throughout each lesson, of what she has learned and mastered. We also will take a 2 minute break to stretch, jump, or do a yoga pose to energize and get more blood and oxygen moving through our bodies and brains! At the beginning of the first session, I like to chat with the student, so that she feels more comfortable with me , and I also get to know a little about her. We also talk at the beginning of every lesson to catch up on what we've been doing since last time. This personal connection is so important, as it increases our ability to work together in a comfortable way.At the end of each session, we always talk about all that the student accomplished in that lesson. We also acknowledge any difficulties that the student encountered, with the assurance that we'll continue working on and developing that skill. Ending in this way helps the student to feel good about her progress and encourages positive feelings about the next session. It's a win-win!I am very committed to keeping parents /caregivers informed about our work and about any reinforcement that the parent or caregiver can give at home. Because I always feel positive about working with children, my discussions with parents are positive as well!

Hi there! My name is Aartee, Im a sophomore at Temple University, and I absolutely love literature, writing, and grammar. My love of English started when I was young; my parents fostered an early appreciation of reading from when I was three years old. I quickly became an avid bookworm, and I would read anything I could get my hands on. My affinity for reading followed me throughout my education, English has always been my favorite subject, and I took A.P. Writing and Composition and Advanced Literature in high school. I went to a college preparatory high school, so I am well versed in ACT and SAT standardized test prep. I started Temple University in the fall of 2016 as an English major, and have taken four college level literature classes to date.My experience with teaching began in high school. During my sophomore year of high school as part of my Girl Scout Gold Award I visited my grade school to teach students about the environment through a hands-on garden planting project. I worked with preschoolers to eighth graders, and it was through this project that I discovered I wanted to teach. Towards the end of my senior year of high school, I taught eighth grade students English and Math through a high school literacy program. After graduating high school, I took a year off in between graduating high school and starting college, and throughout that year I freelance tutored high school aged students in ACT and SAT prep. My most recent teaching experience has been with Temple Universitys Jumpstart Readers Program during the Spring 2017 semester. I volunteered with this program twice a week at a local preschool, and worked with students on fundamental literacy skills. This coming Fall 2017 semester I will be serving as a Jumpstart AmeriCorps member in between class.I am a dedicated and passionate tutor who understands the value of patience and communication. I have worked with a myriad of different students, and I recognize that different students have different needs, and that no two students learn the same way. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions, and I would love to be your tutor! :)
