I recently won the Teacher of the Year award at my school, and I am certified in both Project Based Learning and STEM Education. An avid reader myself, I have a deep passion for teaching students how to read, and how to improve their reading comprehension. I also love teaching math, and have a deep understanding of how skills "spiral" in both the Common Core and Georgia math standards. With the advent of virtual teaching and learning this year, I spent the last quarter of the school year teaching online, so I am well-versed in a multitude of virtual resources and learning platforms.I believe learning should be fun and have honed my ability to integrate all subjects into learning "experiences," which are engaging and challenging for students. All of my students are taught the growth mindset, and through a series of small goals we work together to tackle even the hardest of subjects.

While pursuing my undergraduate education, I became passionate about tutoring younger nursing students and carried my joy of knowledge sharing through being a preceptor in my career as a nurse. Since graduating, I was a cardiac RN for two years, where I encouraged others on my unit to form a study group to pursue a national certification with me. I then practiced as an ICU nurse for four years, during which I balanced working and school online to pursue my master's degree. Most recently, I have been loving my role as a Family Nurse Practitioner for the past two years. I tutor AANP, NCLEX and professional certification prep, as well as pharmacology and science. I truly believe education can be enjoyable and is often better retained when it's funny or quirky! My academic credentials include a Bachelor of Mathematics degree from the University of Texas at Arlington and a Master of Aeronautical Engineering from Stanford University. I am retired from 40+ years of engineering. The last thirty years was working in the flight simulation industry. I had responsibility for doing mathematical modeling of many systems which kept my my math and science skills well exercised. The flight simulation experience also involved frequent use of computer languages such as Ada, C, C++ and less frequent use of other computer languages such as python and java. Tutoring was part of the engineering environment as new engineers were assigned to my group. I earned extra money during my college years tutoring. Though money is not the end objective since retirement, I enjoy tutoring to remain active and challenged. The interaction with students is invigorating. Tutoring gives me a sense of contributing to the well-being of others. It is offering up my skills to help others get a strong start on a career. My tutoring style is to explain principles and possibly do a sample problem, but then observe the student apply the principles to work a problem, gently nudging them in the right direction. I prefer to tutor math and physics, but will not shy away from computer languages and other science applications.

My goal as a tutor is to help YOU find what works for YOU. Over the years, I've heard many students claim they don't like writing, but I want to help you view the writing process as an opportunity to express yourself, and crystallize your ideas and beliefs. Let's approach writing as a chance to discover and refine your thoughts and opinions to paraphrase E.M. Forster, how do you know what you think until you see what you write? Your "way in" to writing can use what speaks to you we can start with music, sports, art, movies, dance, video games, exercise, knitting, books, sculpture, or anything else you love! Even though writing is work for all of us, it's a creative process that brings great rewards when you see what you've accomplished, and I'll do everything I can to help you be successful and enjoy the journey.

It hurts my heart every time I see another student struggle with school work (especially math and chemistry), and that is why I wanted to become a tutor. I love helping other people, and I like the one on one sessions with students so I can make sure they are getting the help they need to succeed. I am a college student at the University of Texas at Arlington, I am pursuing a bachelors degree in Chemistry with a minor in Material Science Engineering. Although in credits I am a year ahead, which means I am technically a sophomore (and I am on track to graduate a year early), this is only my second semester in college. My teaching method is to not answer the question for the student but to ask them questions and bring up fundamental ideas in the subject so the student is able to answer the homework problem on their own. With this teaching style the student will become an independent thinker and will be able to answer a multitude of different problems by being able to think them through. This will also build a students confidence in the subject because the student will eventually be able to answer the question themselves without having to refer to notes which will make them feel as smart as they are becoming!
