I received my Bachelor of Science in Biological Chemistry with a minor in Biology.When I was an undergraduate, I found myself doing well in math classes and biochemistry. I also helped classmates that had trouble with those subjects. So, I decided to help more others by working as a Supplemental Instruction Leader. I don't believe in one-size-fits-all philosophy. I think every student needs to find a learning style that works best for them. With this philosophy in mind, I taught my students to figure out their strengths and weaknesses when it came to their own learning and abilities. Once they find out their learning styles, students know how to approach the materials in a way that works best for them. These approaches helped students learn better in multiple subjects. From October 2009 through August 2014, I worked as a tutor (20+ hours per week) with a highly respected tutoring company. I tutored students of all ages in the areas of reading, writing, and math. I also prepared students for the SAT and ISEE. In September 2013, I started my own business doing private tutoring. I have continued to work with students of all ages in the areas of reading, writing, and math, and I have continued to prepare students for the SAT and ISEE. In general, about half of my students are doing test preparation and half are getting some kind of help with school. At the tutoring center where I worked, we had a number of students who were being tutored in order to become very advanced in their studies at school and to gain admission to highly selective colleges by getting top-notch scores on their SAT. We also had students who were struggling to do well in their classes and therefore needed help with their homework and with understanding the material they were learning in school. I worked successfully with both kinds of students. My approach to tutoring is definitely gentle, but also firm in terms of expecting my students to work hard during the tutoring sessions and to work diligently on any homework I might assign. I am sensitive to the learning styles of my students and do everything I can to communicate in a way that makes sense to them. I often make use of visuals and manipulatives in teaching various concepts. My goal is to enable students to really understand the material they are studying. I am happy to use whatever school or other materials that parents and/or students would like. I am also prepared to suggest additional materials that might be helpful for a particular student in a specific subject area. I am familiar with a number of very helpful resources. Before working at the tutoring center, I was actively involved in the homeschooling community. I homeschooled my older two children through high school and my younger two children through 8th grade. I also taught enrichment classes in the areas of math, science, music, and art to students of all ages in a homeschool co-op, for a total of eight years.

Although in credits I am a year ahead, which means I am technically a sophomore (and I am on track to graduate a year early), this is only my second semester in college.My teaching method is to not answer the question for the student but to ask them questions and bring up fundamental ideas in the subject so the student is able to answer the homework problem on their own. With this teaching style the student will become an independent thinker and will be able to answer a multitude of different problems by being able to think them through. This will also build a students confidence in the subject because the student will eventually be able to answer the question themselves without having to refer to notes which will make them feel as smart as they are becoming!

I am retired from 40+ years of engineering. The last thirty years was working in the flight simulation industry. I had responsibility for doing mathematical modeling of many systems which kept my my math and science skills well exercised. The flight simulation experience also involved frequent use of computer languages such as Ada, C, C++ and less frequent use of other computer languages such as python and java. Tutoring was part of the engineering environment as new engineers were assigned to my group. I earned extra money during my college years tutoring. Though money is not the end objective since retirement, I enjoy tutoring to remain active and challenged. The interaction with students is invigorating. Tutoring gives me a sense of contributing to the well-being of others. It is offering up my skills to help others get a strong start on a career. My tutoring style is to explain principles and possibly do a sample problem, but then observe the student apply the principles to work a problem, gently nudging them in the right direction. I prefer to tutor math and physics, but will not shy away from computer languages and other science applications.
