I am a graduate of Oakland City University in Indiana and Trevecca University in Nashville, Tennessee. I have a passion for teaching English as a Second Language to immigrants of all ages. I also have taught all the subjects in elementary school and enjoy working with students at that level. I believe that every student can learn and make progress. Learning can be fun and definitely should not be boring. I taught in the Little Kids Rock guitar program for several years and enjoy using music, especially with younger students. Sometimes a song can be just the thing to move students along in learning a concept.

I am a certified teacher in both Tennessee and Oregon with my Master of Arts in Teaching from Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Tennessee. I currently work for Portland Public Schools and Portland State University, where I teach English as a Second Language.I began teaching after my college graduation in 2006 at English as Second Language International, which prepared non-native English speaking students to enter an American university setting. From there, I was accepted into the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program and spent a year working in Japanese middle schools. I also did volunteer work in Ireland for a year. I worked full time for Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools while a graduate student. I moved to Oregon in 2011.I have taught people of all ages in many different subject areas. I enjoy writing and reading, which are two strengths of mine as an educator. I understand, as someone who has graded many papers, what makes a good paper and how to help a student produce one on their own. I also love history and took my tiny high school's only AP class; AP U.S. History.

I am a long time Metro Nashville Public Schools teacher (in my 11th year). I currently teach second grade. My favorite subject to teach and tutor would be reading. I myself love to read and continue to be a life long learner. Showing students reading does not always have to be so painful brings light back into their life. My undergraduate B.S. degree is from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville-GO VOLS! and my masters degree is from Trevecca Nazarene University concentrating in educational leadership. I have served as an instructional coach helping the teachers in my building better serve our students and allow them to reach their goals. I have always known I would be a teacher. I can remember to this day playing "school" with my friends and an old discarded teacher's manual. My goal one day is to be in educational administration.When not tutoring or educating, I love to be at the water-beach or lake. In the fall when the weather is cooler, I enjoy watching college football, Predators hockey, and the sights and smells of Autumn. If I am not with a student in a classroom or at their home, you can usually find me volunteering with the Nashville Humane Association. Dogs are my second love!I am excited to help your child/student and watch them grow and change!

Serving as a classroom teacher for twenty-five years, along with my time as a learner, have proved to be one of the greatest opportunities that I have gained from.As a "learner," I was impacted by great teachers. My family included four generations of educators. Two from those generations were my father and grandmother. Both helped me develop a "joy for learning," while they displayed a "joy for teaching." Though I struggled academically in the early grades, they modeled a 'desire to try," which resulted in the "momentum" that helped me intentionally reach learning goals.My mother and grandmother, who were not teachers, fostered my character learning experience. Though my grandmother did not attend school past the third grade, she helped me make the wise decision to follow directions. Mother taught me how trusting relationships within the family and community were vital in learning to live and relate "outside the classroom."I value the learner experience, yet the time came when I accepted the role as a "classroom teacher." Administrators, educators and parents helped me become aware of great teaching principles, which Ilearned to apply. Those acquired skills helped me enhance the academic and character opportunities for each student. In 1998, I was chosen "Teacher of the Year," by my colleagues.The most significant goal I reached as a teacher, is that which I saw in teachers before me- the reward of seeing a child attempt, practice and achieve a desired goal. "Successful learning" is thesuccess of teaching.

This impacts the proficiency throughout the educational process and beyond. When students don't have a solid foundation of understanding the three basic components of writing (1) mechanics and conventions of writing, (handwriting, spelling, capitalization, punctuation, sentence structure),(2) content aspects of writing (conveying meaning, quality, and clarity), (3) cognitive processes of writing (planning, drafting, editing, revision and final draft), their understanding is negatively impacted. I have taught writing for many years to school age and adult learners. I start by covering the basics of the writing process, then move on to expose students to the wide range of purposes of which people write and the forms and strategies needed to produce effective writing.In my travel abroad to China, I was astounded to find the urgency in their school system to learn the mechanics of the English language. Many of their students were speaking English fluently at an early age. Because of my love of reading, I taught my own children to read by age 4, as well as, the children of many family members and friends. English is a complex language with many rules. I find it fascinating and have studied the works of many scholars such as Fountas and Pinnell, Shanker and Ekwall, Denise Eide and many others. When students can learn to unlock the logic of English, they will become fluent at literacy and the understanding of the English language. I have seen this occur in the classroom, as a classroom teacher, facilitator of a reading clinic, literacy coach, and as an administrator, where I was responsible for the learning of hundreds of students.

I am a Licensed K-6 grade teacher, I have recently worked in the role of substitute teacher for 5 years. I have spent time in various classrooms ranging from Kindergarten to 12th Grade. I always enjoy my time with the students. My favorite subject to tutor is Elementary Math subjects, but I am happy to help with any of the other Elementary classes as well. I am able to break even the seemingly straightforward problems. Once the student and I have established a good foundation for concepts, I like to give them tips and shortcuts to make things even easier.I am familiar with traditional as well as common core math methods.

As a dental hygienist with over 25 years of clinical experience, I have always been passionate about helping people realize healthy, beautiful smiles.One of the most important aspects of my successful career in clinical hygiene was learning to motivate patients by educating them to improve their dental health.
