After completing my PhD in Special Education and spending a year and a half conducting research, it became very obvious to me that I am a teacher at heart. In my 20+ years in education I have worked as both a general and special education teacher in public school classrooms, district-level behavioral specialist, and state-wide consultant in the areas of Positive Behavior Interventions and Support and Autism Spectrum Disorders.I especially enjoy working with students who may find learning challenging, as I love discovering what motivates a student.I love teaching anything related to literacy and am trained in Orton Gillingham. I use books to engage students in learning key language, reading, speaking, and writing standards.I also have expertise in teaching students to self-regulate, self-monitor, and self-direct their own learning.I believe all students can learn!

I am a graduate of Appalachian State University. I received my B.S. in Applied physics and my M.S. in Engineering Physics with a focus in Laboratory Automation. I worked as a TA for intro physics and electronics labs and am currently teaching math courses for an after-school program for accelerated students. My passion for math and physics has led to me greatly enjoying teaching others and watching them discover the laws that govern the world we live in. My teaching style involves leading students with questions to find the answers themselves. Understanding the underlying concepts is the key to mastery, not just memorization of equations and formulas.
I am a graduate of Appalachian State University in North Carolina. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Middle School Education and a Master's Degree in K-12 reading. I have 23 years of experience teaching in the public schools. Most of those years were as a Title I teacher and Literacy Specialist for small groups and one-on-one learning. I tutor a variety of subjects but am passionate about reading. I believe once someone learns to read well, then they can learn anything else and a world of possibilities opens up to them!
I am an experienced educator with 28 years in public education, specializing in reading and literacy instruction. Helping struggling readers gain confidence and success is my greatest passion. I graduated from Wake Forest with a Masters of Science in Business Analytics. I graduated from App State with a Bachelor's of Science in Accounting. I graduated from Appalachian State University with a degree in Secondary English Education. I am pursuing my MFA at New York University in Musical Theatre Writing. As an educator in the field of secondary English education for the past four years, I have learned that students first need a support system in order to achieve their own greatness. I hope to be at least a small part of that support system as well as a source of guidance for students who are in need.
I enjoy teaching, helping students gain knowledge, skill, and thereby power. I think the strength and skills of the younger generation are the most important things we can pass on. It takes education to develop those characteristics. I have an admiration and respect for Science, in particular Biology and Envirnomental Science, and I can not imagine a better way to spend my time than to talk about these two favorites, along with Math, with young people. And lastly, I have had a very supportive and happy experience working with Varsity Tutors, and I wholeheartedly approve of the way they manage the relationship of parents and students with we tutors. I tell everyone this is the best "job" I every have had.
Academic instruction is authentic, discussion-oriented, and interdisciplinary in order to create a holistic understanding, critical questioning, and evaluation for a person to grow cognitively and spiritually, promoting the betterment of a multicultural, ever-changing world.
My tutoring philosophy is one that focuses on the goals of the individual and uses their personal talents to strengthen their knowledge base. As a Biologist, I have developed a wide range of academic skills from mathematics, philosophy, psychology, and presentation to help give a holistic, well-rounded experience to students. As a graduate student, I taught Introductory Biology Lab and Molecular Biology Lab at the undergraduate level. In my research, I have facilitated undergraduate training in research skills, animal care, and data analysis, resulting in 4 undergraduate authored publications. Besides extensive experience in tutoring, I am also very friendly, attentive, and patient with students. I have worked with children from kindergarten through graduate school and understand the nuances of teaching at each level. As a tutor, I focus on understanding the reasons and principles behind theories so that the student can become confident in their understanding of materials beyond what they learn with me. I look forward to the growth and joy each student acquires as a result of academic success.
I believe that every student has a unique learning style that I am happy to work with. I strive to build confidence and increase future success. I look forward to working with you!
I grew up in Charlotte and have lived in numerous neighborhoods in the area. My family had a cottage at Lake Norman for many years and we enjoyed many summers on the water. Since then I have made purchases at Lake Norman and Charlotte and have extensive knowledge of what both areas have to offer. NC licensed Broker since 2001.Working as a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Residential is a great way to be able to provide specialized service to prospective clients in geographical areas that they might not otherwise have access to with other companies. Many clients come to the area without any knowledge of what areas might be a good fit for them. I enjoy finding out what their needs are, and developing a strategy to locating the home that best fits their motivations. As for sellers, I understand the selling process with 18 years of experience as a full time Broker. I understand how to see a property from a buyer's perspective and am able to "coach" sellers in a way to make their properties the most desirable to potential buyers.

My approach to tutoring is centered around building trusting relationships with students, which fosters an environment where they feel safe to ask questions and engage in intellectual risk-taking. I utilize strategies like multiple intelligences and graphic organizers to tailor my lessons to individual needs, ensuring that each student can grasp complex concepts at their own pace. My goal is to make physics accessible and enjoyable, transforming the common perception of the subject into a positive experience. I also enjoy astronomy and often incorporate real-world applications to spark curiosity. I look forward to helping students achieve their academic goals and develop a lifelong love for learning. Outside of tutoring, I enjoy spending time with my family. I'm also an avid fitness enthusiast, a kayak fisherman, and I work at a local hardware store where I stay active and engaged in my community.

My Number 1 tutoring goal is to ignite the passion for knowledge and learning inside of every student I have the opportunity to teach. Everyone has the potential to be a learner--it's all about having the tools and someone to believe in you to give you the confidence to try.
Education and learning are so important, and I relish the opportunity to be able to assist young people in their journey, I was socially passed in early elementary school. For whatever reason, I had difficulty with reading. Fortunately, my 3rd grade teacher was really gifted and helped me finally learn to read. After that, reading and learning became enjoyable. Being able to help someone else enjoy reading and learning is exciting to me. If I am able to help someone the way I was helped, life will be wonderful!

Teaching students how to read and fostering a beginning understanding of numbers and how they are used are areas I excel in teaching. In my spare of time I enjoy hiking, and spending time with my family. I enjoy helping students, especially those who struggle in a subject and want more guidance because this allows a more one on time with students in the areas they might be falling behind and it gives us an opportunity to guide and help that student achieve their goal.

I recently graduated with a PhD from Columbia University, where I taught undergraduates in music, anthropology, cultural studies, and writing. I sought to engage students by relating classroom material to the students’ own interests in music, culture, and world affairs. With a certificate in innovate pedagogy from the Teagle Institute, moreover, I bring new media tools into my pedagogic approach, helping students explore material from a variety of angles. Such interactive approaches complement and expand upon more traditional activities, helping students learn to become reflexive about their own thought processes and academic output. My own experience with AP English and Spanish, GRE, TOEFEL and TESOL test preparation and test design makes a strong test prep teacher.I have taught ESL, English reading and composition, Portuguese, anthropology, cultural studies, and music to a variety of learners in a variety of countries. In South Korea, I taught composition and analytical skills to high-achieving middle and high school students, working with both large and small classes and tutoring a high school junior one-on-one. In both Santiago and New York City, I taught English to small groups of adults with proficiencies ranging from advanced to absolute beginner. I have also privately tutored adults in Portuguese in New York. All of these experiences have heightened my sensibilities to different learner needs, particularly with regards to language learning, and I enjoy finding creative ways to convey information to students with different learning styles.

I am currently working toward completing my degree in Computer Science at Oregon State University. Since graduating I have been a classroom teacher of Mathematics and Computer Science. I have taught every math class ranging from Elementary Algebra to Calculus. Students in my classes know they will be asked to explore topics and think critically about the content. I believe that students learn best when the material is meaningful and interesting. For that reason, I use lots of real-world examples and I work to learn about what my students are interested in so that I can connect the material to their life. I believe education is important because it helps us continually grow as individuals and intellectuals. In my spare time in enjoy playing video games, reading, and playing music. I am also working on multiple coding projects in Python, Java, and Javascript.
I believe that all children can learn. I feel that it is important to learn something new everyday. I love math and history. I enjoy watching students when they finally understand what I am asking them to do. Math is not the easiest subject, but it is important to everday life.
The purpose of education is to help our citizenry better itself thru knowledge, better skills, and an enhanced lifestyle. I believe the first step for tutors and teachers is to find a discipline they enjoy, are passionate about, and desire to share it with others. Tutors and teachers must know their audience. I have been a community college accounting instructor for 35 years and taught students possessing a wide range of academic skills, from students possessing a GED certificate to students with doctorates retraining for today's work environment. Incorporating participation from everyone in the class is vital for students to feel welcome and comfortable in the class. As teachers, we must be flexible in delivery methods. The same methods don't work for everyone. With online classes, I try to provide a variety of tools including team projects, discussion boards, narrated slides, practice quizzes, demo problems, and flash cards. Providing as many items as possible without information overload is critical in accounting. I strive to provide extra help and encouragement to struggling students. Many times it's not the subject matter but a wealth of other problems the student is facing. I always try to be empathetic but fair. A good question is: "What would help me if I were the student?" I know and understand that sometimes life gets in the way of our best-laid plans. For a student to feel successful in an online class the student must feel included in the class activities. I never want students to feel an online class is a glorified independent study. I use a discussion forum for every chapter for students to ask questions regarding difficult topics and hopefully post answers to some of these questions. I send email messages to students that miss 2 tests in a row to see what the problem is with their lack of participation. Not always, but sometimes the phone call is all it takes to get the student back on track. Students need to know teachers had to once learn the discipline. I tell my students there is no mistake in accounting they will make I haven't made 100 times. Students need to see the human side of a teacher. Many times a teacher might be the only role model a student has. A teacher should consider this mentoring task a privilege to help guide and shape someone else. Part of a teacher's role is to build confidence and encourage students to reach further. I have community college graduates from my program that continued on to obtain a bachelor's degree and are now CPAs. I am most proud of my students that decide they want to continue their education and then come teach for me. On days when things haven't gone right in the class, I always tell myself, "This is the only time students have to learn about this topic. So don't give up and dismiss class early." We can't afford for students to miss a chance to learn something that might make a difference to them in the future.

I graduated from NC State University with a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science and a Bachelor of Science in Zoology. I aspired to become a veterinarian. After struggling in my entry-level Chemistry and calculus classes but excelling in history, English, and Literature classes, I realized that my gifts were in these areas as opposed to science and higher math. I also realized that teaching was my calling after earning my teaching certification from UNC-Charlotte. However, I love science! Although I was initially certified in Biology, my first teaching position was teaching physical science. I LOVED IT! I taught myself physics and eventually earned my AP Physics 1 certification from College Board. It was the journey into physics that revealed my strengths in applying physics to Real World phenomena,I have taught physical science, physics, AP Physics 1, Algebra I, literature, and grammar. I have worked 1 to 1 teaching homebound students in science, and literature. My love of history makes me passionate about it as well! I read nonfiction American history as a hobby! I also have traveled extensively in the Lower 48 States with North Dakota, Oregon, Louisiana, Alaska, and Hawaii being the only states I have never visited. I believe that chemistry isn't just a subjectit's a way of understanding the world around us. My approach to tutoring is to meet students exactly where they are in their learning journey, building confidence step-by-step. I focus on making complex concepts accessible by connecting them to real-world applications, whether it's the chemistry behind cooking, environmental issues, or everyday materials. By linking theory to practical examples, I help students see the relevance of what they're learning and develop the skills to think critically, solve problems, and succeed in the classroom and beyond.
