Hello, to give you a very brief glimpse of myself, I will start by telling you that I am a native Spanish speaker, I learned and began mastering English at the age of 6 years old, I began studying French in High School, lived in France for a year over my junior in College which formed an amazing foundation for my majoring in French, besides languages and literature, I am lover of math, science and business. I do have a masters in business which I received from Columbia Business School in New York City. My experience and skills go beyond what I may be able to express here and do hope to have the opportunity to work with as many students as possible. I am originally from the Caribbean and grew up in New York. I have been in Saint Louis for over 10 years now and have more than 20 years working in the Financial Services industry. I have a life-long love for teaching and learning. The pleasure I gain from teaching and helping students create excellent study habits and mastery of the subjects I teach or tutor, goes beyond words.I have an MBA in Finance and Accounting from Columbia Business School in New York City. As such, I have taken introductory and intermediate level statistics, calculus I and II, pre Algebra, Algebra I, Elementary and HS level geometry, undergraduate and graduate level accounting courses as well as Finance. I have also tutored in all of these courses to elementary, HS, college and graduate students. I am a native Spanish speaker. I sincerely hope you that you contact me to chat on how I can help you or your child to be academically triumphant!

I am a graduate of Columbia College in Missouri. I received my Bachelor of Science in Management and Finance. I have been working in the accounting and tax industry for my entire career. I enjoy teaching others about taxes and accounting. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, bicycling, skating, and puzzles.
I am nearing my Senior year as an English Major at Columbia College. For years now I have been passionate about all things Englishputting words down effectively (and beautifully) on paper, reading classic (and sometimes not-so-classic) literature, and mastering the nuts and bolts of the language. My goal as a tutor is (obviously) to help you understand and master these subjects adequately enough to pass your test or class, but also, I hope to inspire in each student an appreciation for this amazing language and unlock the tools necessary to allow students to face future writing/reading/English-involving situations with confidence and skill. For several years I taught privately as a violin teacher, and since violin is considered one of (if not the) most challenging instruments to learn, this experience gave me valuable lessons in teaching patiently and creatively. Each student and academic situation are unique, and as such, requires varying teaching methods. I do not use a one-size-fits-all approach, but instead, strive to meet each student where they are and adapt the content to fit each students learning needs and preferences. Some of my other interests include traveling the globe, running long distance, all things outdoors (kayaking, camping, horseback riding, and the like), spending time with my family, and watching baseball (Go Royals!).
I graduated summa cum laude from Southern Methodist University in 2012. I received my Bachelor of Arts in political science and my Bachelor of Science in economics. After graduating, I immediately moved to New York City to attend Columbia Law School, where I will receive my JD in May, 2015. Throughout undergraduate, I regularly tutored economics, math, and statistics courses at the school's tutoring center, and helped several students to turn around their class performance. I also enjoy helping students prepare for standardized test, whether that be the SAT or the LSAT. Especially with regard to the SAT Math, I love helping students understand the various curveballs that CollegeBoard often throws, and assisting them in achieving better scores than they thought possible. I am also passionate about Texas Rangers baseball, and fill an inordinate amount of my free time with fantasy sports and statistical research on the sport.
I received my bachelors and law degrees from Columbia University in New York. As an attorney who has lived and studied abroad, my teaching style is influenced by my broad experiences and big-picture mentality, understanding that students learn in different ways. I believe the most important thing in teaching is to frame the problem in a way that the student can understand what the bigger questions are, and to create their own frameworks to address issues without outside assistance. I also believe in encouraging consistent and efficient study habits so that students know how to study most effectively. Outside of work, I love to ballroom dance and explore the food scene in New York City.
As a teacher I believe in and follow two teaching philosophies: Love and Logic AND Growth Mindset. This ends up looking like it being very clear how much I love and care for my students while also pushing them to learn from the hard moments. While I am encouraging my students to do their best work, I am always reminding them that "we can do hard things." By keeping this in mind, it makes learning so much more fun! I love helping students have those light bulb moments. A little bit about me, I have been a working with kids for 20 years and teaching for 10 years. I received my undergraduate from Columbia College, SC and my partial Master's (for my learning disability teacher license add on) from Furman University. This means that I have a background in both general and special education, all at the elementary level. I love tutoring in reading, writing, math, and social/emotional best! In my free time, I love photography, reading, cooking, and spending time with my my husband and our cat.
I am currently studying at Columbia University and am excited to help others reach their academic goals on Varsity Tutors.
Striving to reduce language barriers in education. Growing-up as a twin, I spent the early part of my life communicating in a self-made language that has since been forgotten. After years of speech therapy, I can form the sounds of the English language proficiently. Later in my education, I began to learn Spanish, American Sign Language, and Portuguese. In a previous role, I would converse with my Hispanic colleagues in Spanish to expand my vocabulary. Prior to the pandemic, I attended Deaf Night Out in Columbus, OH, to participate in the deaf community. Lastly, I visited Sao Paulo, Brazil, where my conversational Portuguese improved.I am not a language tutor. I never plan to be. I want to create an environment for clients of different language abilities to feel accepted as I guided them to better understanding in the subjects of mathematics and chemistry.During my undergraduate studies, I tutored for 2.5 years in the math and chemistry departments.

I am a graduate of Columbia College where Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education. Additionally I received a Master in Education degree from Lesley University. I have been a teacher for 18 years. 14 of those years, I devoted my time in the classroom as a full time teacher. The most recent 4 years I transitioned to being a Math Interventionist. Being a teacher has been a rewarding experience for me. Knowing that I have helped shape and nurture students has filled my heart with joy and contentment. Most recently as a Math Interventionist, I was able to work 1:1 or in a small group with students. Also, I was able to tailor lessons to meet their learning needs and help them build and enhance their number sense/fluency. Many students were afraid to struggle or make mistakes. I help to build their confidence and reassured them that mathematicians will make mistake and struggle from time to time. My job as an educator has always been to motivate students to become independent thinkers and confident learners. These are the qualities they need to have in order to be successful individuals in society.
I am a retired trial attorney with 43 years of experience, a recent five-year tutor, a published writer, and a life-long fan of young people. I have my theory of learning: the brain does not know the word "No Positivity above all. If you learn what to do, you will not do what not to do.."
I'm an undergraduate at Columbia College. I love tutoring students in math, German, SHSAT, and SAT. I believe that I have good communication and pedagogical skills, and a firm understanding of the subject matter. Having come from Germany at the age of eleven, I know the frustration that can come with feeling overwhelmed by coursework. I performed well on standardized exams like the SHSAT and the SAT and can teach test-taking skills that will ultimately lead students to institutions like Stuyvesant H.S. and Columbia.
