I have been a certified teacher now for 5 years. 2 years ago I decided to further my own education and went back to school to get my masters in Early Childhood Education.

I am from Ypsilanti, Michigan and graduated from Hampton University with a bachelors of arts in political science, and University of Phoenix with a master's of business administration. I also graduated from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte with a post-master certification in school administration and currently work as a dean of students at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. I have been in education, around the country, for over 20 years in various roles, serving in other educational capacities such as department chair, team leader and principal. He has worked for the U.S. House of Representatives and on several state and local campaigns. The most important moment in a teacher's life is when the "ah-ha" moment occurs with a student. That moment is the one that I have lived to see over and over again. When I see that moment in the face or eyes of my student, I know my job in nearly completed.I have taught many different course over my career along with some ELA, and business courses as well as physical education. My main course of studies was the discipline of social studies, including but not limited to United States History or American History, World History, Civics and Economics or Government, World Geography, and African American Studies. My focus is on helping students understand American government and American history. I try to tie in specific contribution of the many different communities and cultures that have made up the United States to help make clear the many contributions that went into making the country what it is today.My teaching philosophy is to start in a lecture format to set up the background of the lesson and then expand to a conversation where all parties can contribute to the discussion as we learn how and why situations and concepts evolved as they did. I will present information and ask for feedback to what we are learning and why it matters. As we get further along, I will ask students to help present the lesson as to bring about ownership of the subject so can all learn together.

I've been a reading and writing teacher for 7 years. I have a lot of experience with helping students raise their reading and writing skills grade levels in a short amount of time. I have a Master's degree in literacy and reading instruction. Also, I love to make learning fun! I am passionate about teaching reading, and I love my work as a reading specialist/interventionist. I taught for 41 years, and I also worked as the school principal for 16 years. I have taught all of the grades from preschool through grade eight. I also provided literacy themed professional development with teachers with Concordia University. I am currently teaching literacy classes at Depaul University. I am writing my dissertation regarding explicit instruction of reading skills. I believe learning about a child, and their skills, is key to creating targeted, differentiated instruction for him/her. I also believe it is important to help readers find text with which they can connect and enjoy. Reading opens doors - it is exciting to see those doors open for learners.

I have been teaching for over 20 years, both as a technical trainer (Information Technology, Leadership, HIPAA, CyberSecurity Awareness, Unix/Linux) and as an ESL/FFL instructor specializing in immersion and pronunciation/speech therapy for speakers of other languages.I hold a Masters in Computer Science with a focus on Computational Linguistics, as well as a Bachelors in Computer Science and Engineering. I am also continuing my learning journey by taking at least a course/workshop a year, so throughout the years I have encountered many educators and styles of teaching, and strive to emulate the best.As a coach and educator myself, I am passionate about helping students succeed in their endeavors and meeting their learning goals. I am a gardener at heart, always looking for the best way to customize my teaching style to maximize the students' knowledge and progress.
