Currently, I am a student at Eastern Michigan University studying linguistics and Japanese. My aim is to graduate in 2017 and continue to teach Japanese and ESL.My experience has varied significantly over the years in terms of subjects taught, age group, and even location. I have a PhD from Michigan State University in English with a special focus on African American Literature and History and Philosophy of Science. I have taught extensively at large research universities and small liberal arts colleges, covering wide ranges of subjects in writing, literary studies, critical theory, and philosophy of science. I am most proud of my work with STEM students, guiding them through writing classes and humanities and helping them make the most of their studies and develop transferable skills in qualitative analysis and written communication. My classes focused on grammar, usage, voice, and creation. Most of my students were either students who spoke English as their second language or who were first generation college students. After a year at HFCC, I spent seven years teaching English as a foreign language in South Korea. I mostly worked with elementary and middle school students, but I did have some adult students as well. I loved helping non-native English speakers improve their language skills, and I loved seeing my younger students develop in all language areas.Outside of teaching, I enjoy reading, listening to music, and spending time with my wife and dog. I am a semi-retired High School Mathematics Teacher with 25 years of teaching and tutoring experience. Throughout all my work experiences, one of my favorite positions I've held was that of an instructor! In the past, I have had the opportunity to lead the instruction of basketball camps for many age groups (1st grade through high school) as well as serve as a JV high school basketball coach.
