My master's thesis was on the impact on US-China relations of Americas grand strategy in the Indo-Pacific, in which I made several accurate projections of the emerging conditions of the international environment, among them increased militarization and regionalism in the context of the closing of the post Cold War conditions .It is for these reasons that aside from English and college applications essays I am positioned to teach beginner and intermediate level Chinese , and I can tutor students of international affairs and political science , especially those with an interest in Northeast Asia. Social sciences in general are perhaps my favorite subjects to teach because my academic interests are in social and political science as well.With regards to Chinese language teaching, I have had students with no experience before meeting me whatsoever and students that had been learning for up to two years before starting class with me. In planning classes with my students I first consult them/their parents on their goals and previous exposure to studying Chinese and proceed by asking them some basic questions or showing some simple sentences to measure their reading ability. I'm most suited to teaching students that have been studying Chinese for three years or less, but beyond this point any language student will be familiar with the need to regularly practice their speaking skills and am available for a more free flowing conversational style class for advanced students who may be interested.As for my English teaching , I can teach conversation, reading and debate to ESL learners or, for native speaking students and ESL students alike assist with analytical and college application essays. Additionally I'm very familiar with the IELTS/TOEFL exam structures for ESL students interested in studying in English speaking countries.My teaching methodology is student centered. I emphasize the need for students to participate in a language lesson so as to internalize concepts, language knowledge and fluency that I am always ready to explain patiently but encourage my students to actually implement during their valuable time. I received my undergraduate degree from Florida International University with a degree in Hospitality Management. I worked in the private sector for several years and became interested in education after my first child was born and we discovered he had a disability. As I researched disabilities and ways to help my child understand the curriculum, I discovered that I could help other children and I pursued a M.Ed, in Special Education. I graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with my M.Ed. in Special Education (General Curriculum) and was hired as an Autism teacher at the school where I completed my student teaching. I am now in my third year of teaching were I have worked with a variety of disabilities. My philosophy of teaching is simple. A classroom is not a "cookie cutter classroom", where one size fits all. As a special educator I must adapt the curriculum to each student, taking into account the diverse population of a 21st century classroom. I do this first by getting to know my students as individuals, taking into account their backgrounds, interests, goals, academic strengths, personal needs, and abilities where I can then focus on how they can best access the curriculum. I enjoy working with all subjects in the elementary curriculum however I am drawn to Math and Language Arts where I can employ research-based strategies that incorporate multiple means of representation that best fit the individual needs of the learner. Some of these strategies include a multi-sensory approach to students who struggle with reading and developing number sense for younger students in math. By the end of the school year, all six of my students passed the exam (and two of those students received the highest score).I have additional experience tutoring College Algebra. I tutored two of my peers; both of them had been averaging 70%'s on the exams, and once I started tutoring them, their exam grades started averaging 90%'s. Through my mentoring, I have experience working with children with ADHD, as the first grader I mentored was diagnosed with it.
