I am an undergraduate student at Georgetown University. I am majoring in biology of global health and minoring in economics. I have previously tutored high school students in math and chemistry, and I also served as a DC STEM and DC Reads tutor for elementary students. Although I tutor a range of subjects, I am most passionate about biology because I enjoy its applications to our world. I believe in making education accessible and making learning as fun as possible. In my free time, I enjoy golfing and working out.

A former Princeton graduate student, I am currently a high school teacher and I have been teaching the SAT and GRE for 10 years. I have been able to lift scores up in both math and reading, helping students gain acceptance into schools like Princeton, Harvard, Lehigh, UPenn, Monmouth, and Rutgers. While the SAT may seem daunting, I can show certain techniques and strategies for overcoming it. But it takes more than just techniques to improve on the SAT. I also help students with the "grunt work" needed to improve their score on the SAT. Additionally, I can help all students looking to take the GRE, another of my specialties
I am deeply passionate about the field of education. I look forward to tutoring and helping individuals who are dedicated to their future. I am happy to offer advice about college applications and career counseling as well. I can't wait to meet you!
Shannon is an experienced and enthusiastic tutor with over 5 years of teaching and tutoring experience. She just graduated from medical school and will be starting her residency in family medicine in June. She has experience tutoring and teaching a large variety of subjects from elementary school to graduate level classes. Her favorite subjects to teach include math, science, test prep, and college/graduate school applications.
I'm retired from a long career in international business, with over 25 years living and working in Latin America. When teaching Spanish, I carefully consider the student's personal goals for learning the language. Is it to be able to communicate at work? Prepare for a test? Read academic texts in Spanish? Prepare for a mission trip? The student's goals will always guide my teaching approach because our success will be measured by attaining those goals.
I believe language is what makes us uniquely human. It equips us to convey thoughts and concepts in myriad ways. I'll work hard to help you understand language essentials--phonology, morphology, syntax (aka grammar)--and improve your writing. Whether you're interested in crafting a creative piece, honing a term paper for a class, or perfecting your college application essay, my comprehensive approach will empower you for success!
Before Varsity Tutors, I worked with underprivilieged students from kindergarten through 8th grade in all subjects. I often find that students struggle because they lack confidence which leads to test anxiety and frustration. I try to address these issues by teaching in a way that is in line with the student's learning style. Although I maintain high expectations for all students, I like to create a fun and relaxed environment to make it as least stressful as possible.I am currently taking prerequisite classes in preparation for a graduate program in Speech-Language Pathology. I graduated in 2010 from Georgetown University with a degree in linguistics with a concentration in education.
I am a retired orthopedic surgeon who had been in clinical practice for close to 40 years before retiring. I did my undergraduate training at the University of Southern California (go Trojans) graduating with a BS in Biology. I attended the Georgetown University School of Medicine and went on to specialty training in Orthopedic Surgery at UC San Francisco finishing up with the United States Army Medical Corp with the rank of Major. I have been practicing orthopedic surgery since then until retirement. In surgery, there has always been the saying "see one, do one, TEACH one. Education has always been important in my family; and all four of my kids are graduates of the UC system. They all experienced the trials and tribulations of SATs, National Merit, AP courses, etc. In my spare time I have built lifted off-road four wheel drive vehicles, every desktop computer we have owned from components, have mastered unusual computer programs such as AutoCad, and have welded together a utility trailer that even passed California inspection. I plan to learn a musical instrument. The big advantage I would have in the subject matter of human anatomy, biology and physiology is the fact that there is no closer proximity to the subject matter than having actually working on the anatomy when the anatomy is still alive.
I enjoy being on the other side of education as a tutor while still improving my own understanding of the subject.Upon graduating from college, I developed tutoring skills while helping high school students prepare for their SAT II Subject Exams, covering wide ranges including math, biology, and chemistry. I was responsible for elaborating on answers using relevant figures and innovative examples, creating catchy mnemonics, and solving problems from students' point of view. As a tutor, I remained accessible but maintained an appropriate distance to earn students' respect, and five out of ten students improved their scores by more than 200 points. Through these teaching experiences, I have learned not only to become a teacher from the students' perspective, but also what it takes to be an effective educational provider and a mentor. While taking six medical school courses throughout my graduate school program, I have been able to practice and enhance teaching methods by organizing study groups that regularly conducted review sessions before exams, highlighting important concepts made during the lectures, sharing concise notes and outlines, bringing up pertinent and innovative questions, and academically stimulating my peers without any unwelcoming pressures. Through these learning and teaching environments, I have directly experienced what interactive measures really foster healthy learning environments. With these experiences and my avid passion, I am confident I will be a valuable asset to your student.
Hey there! My name is Lauren and I am a former D1 heptathlete at Georgetown University! I graduated with a B.A. in Psychology with a Pre-Med concentration and I am currently on my way to law school! Originally from the Boston area, I completed my undergrad degree at Georgetown University in Washington where I focused on Marketing, International Business, and Spanish. I have lived and worked in Boston, Spain, Belgium, Washington, Brazil, and Afghanistan. I completed an MBA in Finance and International Management at Boston University in 2012 and am recently back in the Boston area again. I enjoy traveling and adventure.
Current MBA student from Georgetown University looks to help more people to learn Chinese language and culture.
Born in the United States, I moved to France when I was seven years old. Because of that slightly jarring move and my BA in Linguistics from Georgetown University, I have a wonderful understanding of how languages are learned and how to teach them. I have tutored French and ESL to students of all ages. I thoroughly enjoy sitting down with a student of mine, pinpointing their problems, and then addressing them in an efficient but exciting manner.I also enjoy deconstructing tests with students; figuring out what the test is asking for and how to give the testing service what it wants. Students do best on these standardized forms of assessment when they know specifically what is being asked of them, and I am more than happy to help them figure it out.I can also engage students more fully in their homework in general, ensuring that they are not only completing their assignments accurately, but also verifying their grasp on the material.I look forward to meeting all of you!
I am excited to use my education and experience to help you meet your academic and professional goals. I graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor's degree. My law degree is from Georgetown University.
I'm a dedicated educator with experience in public, private and international education. I attended Georgetown University and the University of Chicago and have a genuine passion for helping students achieve academic success.I have taught a variety of subjects from 8th-12th grade, including AP US Government and Economics, IB Economics, IB World History, and IB Theory of Knowledge. In addition, I have 5 years experience as Senior Advisor to 12th grade students, both in public and private schools, which involved substantial assistance with college applications and personal essay editing. My extracurricular experience includes coaching the chess club at two schools, directing the Model United Nations team, and teaching guitar.I have tutored SATs in school and LSATs with a private company. Prior to becoming an educator I practiced law for 6 years.
I am an incoming medical student at Creighton University. I graduated with a bachelor's degree in Physics from Georgetown University as well as the equivalent of a minor in French. For as long as I can remember, I have had a deep desire for learning and for guiding others through subjects that are difficult for them, especially in the math, languages and the quantitative sciences.I work to ensure that the learning process for my clients is challenging without being intimidating. My clients describe me as patient and thorough.I have prior experience tutoring math (from Pre-algebra to Calculus), Chemistry and French. So if you want to be challenged while having fun, reach out to me so that I can help you achieve your goals. My hobbies include various fitness activities, tennis, piano, guitar, eating peanut butter, reading, running and learning new things.
I am excited and ready to help your student with reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar, and/or literature study. For more than twelve years I taught English and language arts in grades 6 through 12 in public school and independent school. I prepared for teaching with an undergraduate degree in English from Georgetown University and a Masters in Arts from Boston University, focusing on English Secondary Education. Most recently, I taught sixth and seventh graders for five years at a local, prestigious independent school. Being a classroom teacher was extremely challenging and exciting, but I always wanted to have more time to work individually with students because they improve so much with that kind of personalized attention.I have lived and breathed improving students' reading, writing, and thinking for half of my life. What I have learned is that there is no one right way to teach all students. Everyone learns differently. Different methods, different materials, and different experiences capture young people's imaginations and can help them master the skills and materials. My teaching experience working with hundreds of students will enable me to do what is best for your student. I have children myself, and I know that personality plays a huge role in how we learn. I am excited to be a coach and cheerleader for your student to help him or her succeed.
Education truly is the social justice issue of our time; no other endeavor is so far-reaching in its ability to precipitate change in all other areas of society. It is this principal that drives me as an educator; as a teacher and tutor I am entrusted with the privilege of sharing the gift of culture, conversation and critical-thinking.I have been a primary school dual language teacher in New York City for the past 4 years. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Linguistics from Georgetown University and a Master's Degree in Education from Hunter College, which I received through the New York City Teaching Fellows program. My teaching and tutoring practices are based in student-led, performance-based learning that allows students to work towards their goals in at their own pace and according to their own personal learning needs. I am a firm believer in making content relevant and relatable so as to facilitate the integration of new concepts and ideas.I am trained and certified to teach all of the content areas for grades 1-6 (English Language Arts, STEM, Social Studies, etc.), and am also qualified to teach Spanish Language up through the college level. As your tutor, I will do everything I can to help you reach your goals!
I've always liked to travel and to know people from different countries. I've always felt that we are all alike, in spite of our "differences". I have friends from around the world, from travelling and from my jobs in international departments of publishing companies, which is where I have worked for over 20 years. I lived in England for 10 years and loved living in Europe, where I was able to reach so many different countries. I majored in French in college, starting to learn it at the age of 10 years. I became a big fan of French history, literature, films, food and people. I've taught ESL for about 6 years, to people from different countries and I love to help my students learn to use a tool that will help them in their work, studies, and lives and will make a big difference to their happiness!I love cooking, growing plants and vegetables, listening to vintage rock music, cooking new recipes, seeing films, going to concerts of classical music and rock music, and singing.
Tutor for Latin American Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese at all levels. Ivy League Master's degree with deep cultural expertise in Latin America and 20 years of experience using Spanish and Portuguese across educational, professional, and social environments.
I am a graduate of Georgetown University, where I majored in Physics and French. I plan on working towards a graduate degree in Applied Mathematics. I have been teaching and tutoring Math, French, and Physics for more than seven years. In my past experience, I have taught a great variety of students in vastly different settings. From teaching a math class to high school students, to tutoring a four year old in french online, I love the variety of my experiences I have as a tutor. I greatly enjoy seeing the progress that my students make, both in their academic track record and their skills as a student. In my opinion, no one is 'bad' at a certain subject - I'm passionate about finding ways for my students to connect with subjects that they have struggled with in the past. In my free time, I enjoy reading, baking, yoga, hiking, and photography.
I am a Masters graduate in Biotechnology/Biomedical Sciences from Georgetown University and undergraduate from Lafayette College with a focus in Biology/Bioengineering. In my tenure of work, I have participated in 4 research labs pertaining to oncology, drug development and genetics. Outside of the laboratory, I have worked in pharmaceuticals, investment banking and tech startups where I currently hold a position in management consulting. In my free time I enjoy reading biographies, traveling the world, playing soccer/basketball and hiking. I love to tutor because I think education is one of the most important pillars to success. I started tutoring in high school and haven't stopped, constantly learning as much from the students I mentor as they learn from me.
I am a BS in Biochemistry and recent graduate from a very rigorous program at Georgetown University where I have taken the first-year medical school curriculum (scoring in the top 2% of the class), receiving a Master's of Science degree in Physiology and Biophysics. Ever since I was a child, I have been wildly inquisitive. I was the annoying classmate who always raised their hand and had to know why everything was the way it is and worked the way it did before we moved on. My tutoring style works the same way. I do *not* believe in memorization and have textbooks as clear as yesterday engrained in my head years after learning them is because of taking time to break concepts down to their simplest ideas and building upwards. By breaking complex concepts into their basic subunits, and explaining the purpose of each unit and how and why it works, it creates connections in the brain (schema) and writes into long term memory. Most of my students have mastered concepts so much, after getting an A in their class, they went on to tutor the subject themselves. My expertise lies in the premedical and science curriculum: Chemistry (general, organic, and physical); Biology (general, cell, and molecular); Biochemistry and Metabolism; Physics (1 and 2); Math (precalculus to calculus 3); and SAT/GRE/MCAT prep. Having a strong background in all of these subjects is invaluable in a tutor, because there is an immense amount of crossing over in the sciences. Without math, you cannot understand physics or chemistry, and without chemistry, you cannot master biology. With my help, I will ensure you have true mastery of all of your material as well.Aside from the sciences, I have a deep love for classical music (particularly the Romantic era), and am a competitive pianist and composer. I also love to garden (feel free to ask for pictures any time) and have recently fundraised and planted a rose garden for a DC homeless shelter I play piano for every week (as part of their sound empowerment program).I look forward to working with you!
Hello! My name is Ritika and I recently graduated with dual degrees in computer science and biology. I am currently a first-year medical student passionate about helping students excel in preparing for college biology, chemistry, and MCAT preparation.
I am a senior at Georgetown University majoring in International Politics. I currently live at home in Maryland. I have always been a high-performing student who loves learning, and I hope to help other individuals succeed in school as well. I understand that being a good tutor is about more than just being intelligent, and I look forward to individualizing my tutoring approaches to what works best for each student. I also believe that creating a positive, encouraging environment helps people learn better, so I like to think I have a good sense of humor!
Growing up in a bicultural family and attending high school in Tianjin, China not only allowed me to become fluent in Mandarin but also instilled in me a passion for Chinese language and culture that I am eager to share with my students. My own experiences of learning how to read and write Chinese have given me a valuable perspective and skill set that will greatly contribute to my abilities as a tutor.I received my MS Physiology degree from Georgetown University and my undergraduate degree in Behavioral Neuroscience from Lehigh University, where I was afforded the opportunity to take graduate-level classes in Chinese literature. Having received a score of 5 in AP Chinese, taking advanced language courses, serving as a teacher’s assistant, as well as providing professional translation and interpretation services for a company in Tianjin, I possess the relevant background and experience to teach students of all skill levels and learning goals.I love meeting new people and look forward to learning and working together soon!
Teaching is absolutely inspiring. Nothing beats the "ah ha" moment a student gets when he or she realizes that they can achieve what they deemed "impossible." People are capable of much more than they think, and, often, it just takes a little encouragement for people to reach new potentials. I want my students to make connections and discover how much fun learning can be.As a tutor I strive to engage, challenge, and inspire growth in my students.
From my earliest high school years, I have had a passion for languages- studying Spanish, Italian, French, and German simultaneously by my senior year and continuing studies with Japanese and Russian before finishing high school. During high school, I tutored in Spanish and French.I received my BA from Georgetown University where I had begun my studies in the School of Languages and Linguistics and then later transferred to the College of Arts and Sciences to expand my studies to include International Economics and disciplinary studies via the Georgetown School of Foreign Service. During my undergraduate time, I lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina where I studied Political Science, International Economics, and Literature in addition to working in an International Consulting agency. I thrived during my time there socially and academically- researching for two theses to complete my undergraduate studies, with one in Spanish. During my time at Georgetown, I also studied Portuguese and tested at the high proficient level. Finally, I completed my Spanish certification while answering political science questions to a board of Spanish Faculty Professors- scoring the second highest level of fluency in Spanish with distinction for Foreign Service-Political Science knowledge. My Master's degree is in Latin American Studies from UCLA where I studied the economic, social and political science trends- specifically focusing on South America.Since graduating, I have been in sales- mostly commercial financial consulting and look forward to helping share experiences and mentoring in the same consultative style by learning strengths and challenges faced by each student and determining action plans to succeed together- not just teaching a lesson, but ensuring the lesson is active, engaged, and memorable to be enjoyed and lived thereafter.
I am a dental student pursuing my Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at Columbia University. I grew up in Trinidad and Tobago. Many people equate island life to easy going personalities and no worries, which encompasses me. However, within the Caribbean, Trinidad also has a notorious reputation for rigorous academics and producing strong academic talent. After leaving my beloved island, I gained >700 SAT I and II scores and received an academic scholarship to attend my first choice, Georgetown University, where I majored in Mathematics, with a pre-medical concentration. During college, I pursued my passion for education. I taught SAT Mathematics to college-bound juniors and seniors and was dedicated to improving my students. I carefully nurtured my students individually and transformed them from barely scraping by on the SATs to having highly respectable scores that gained them entry to their choice of Ivy-league institution.Beyond the classroom, I have expressed my passion for educating others through Global Outreach and Patient Education, in countries like Trinidad, Ethiopia and Cape Verde. Apart from that, I paint, tap dance, play violin and try to head to a beach whenever I can.I hope that we can connect and I look forward to helping you prepare for your exams and future!

I am a graduate of Georgetown University. I received my Bachelor of Arts and Science in Marketing and International Business. In college, I worked with both Georgetown University Young Scholars, a mentoring program and DC Reads, a program specifically designed to eradicate illiteracy in students of DC Public Schools. Through these programs, I worked with students from the age of 5 to 18 years old. Through my tutoring sessions, I make it a point to develop a trusting relationship with my students, opening an open dialogue and allowing for the most productive and effective sessions possible. I am happy to assist in a variety of subjects, and am particularly interested in online tutoring that is flexible to both of our schedules!
I have always loved languages, writing, and foreign affairs. Consequently, it was no surprise that I chose to go to Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service. Here, I majored in International Culture and Politics where I was able to become proficient in writing, political science, and economics. I also obtained my certification of French proficiency during a language immersion program while I studied abroad in Tours, France. As a result, I enjoy tutoring in many of these same subject areas, with writing and government being the two areas I most enthusiastic about. While in high school I tutored my peers in math, in college I tutored peers in writing, and I also tutored high school students in the Cristo Rey Network while I was at Georgetown as part of an academic externship. Yet, I enjoy working with students of all ages. A lot of my experience in working with younger students stems from having a large family with many younger cousins and other family members that I have been close with.My interest in working with a variety of people is what led me to law school where I largely focused on international law, criminal justice, immigration, and human rights. Through many experiences both in and out of the courtroom, I have had the opportunity to work with individuals from all walks of life and many backgrounds. I believe that my passion for working with people, and my interest in making complex materials easily accessible to others, is what makes me a great tutor.I enjoy approaching materials from unique points of view so that students always have a fresh perspective on subjects they are uncomfortable with. I am a foodie and love cooking, so sometimes I enjoy using incorporating food into lesson plans. Lately, I have enjoyed playing tennis and cycling. I travel whenever possible, and I aim to live by learning something new everyday.

Hello, and thank you for visiting my profile! I'm a Georgetown University graduate with a degree in finance, and I've spent over 25 years in commercial banking applying mathematical concepts to real-world financial decision-making. My tutoring journey began over 15 years ago when I started teaching my own son math in middle school. I guided him through algebra, geometry, and advanced topics all the way through his SAT preparation. He went on to score well, earn admission to Georgetown University, and graduated just a couple of years ago. That experience showed me how much I enjoy teaching, and it was incredibly rewarding to see his confidence grow and his skills develop year after year. It also sparked my passion for helping other students build strong foundations in math and achieve their own academic goals. Since then, I've combined my professional experience in finance and banking with my love of teaching to help students succeed in subjects ranging from Algebra I and II to Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and SAT Math. My approach is structured but supportive: I start with a quick assessment, identify areas for growth, and then break complex concepts into clear, manageable steps. I use official SAT practice materials, error logs, and targeted strategies to improve both accuracy and timing. Whether a student is aiming to strengthen fundamentals or reach a top percentile score, my goal is to build both skills and confidence so they can perform at their very best. If you are looking for a tutor who combines deep expertise with a supportive, results-driven approach, I would be honored to work with you.
As a dedicated educator, I excel at finding and developing the potential of my students. I have been tutoring since I was a college student at Georgetown University in the 1990's. After graduation, I worked for four years on the trading floor of an Argentinian bank in New York City where I traded money markets and other instruments in three languages: English, Spanish and Portuguese, so I took a winding route back to the classroom, but I have now been teaching for more than 14 years in Texas.I am certified in English, ESL, Spanish, Composite Social Studies and dance. I have coached tennis and for the last 11 years have directed an award-winning ballet folklorico program. I also currently teach an AVID elective. AVID is a college prep class, so I have experience prepping students for college and in writing exceptional college and scholarship essays.I really enjoy teaching and look forward to working with you.
Hello, my name is Alexis! I am currently a rising junior at Georgetown University, where I am double majoring in Government (Political Science) and English. For the summer, I am home in Phoenix, Arizona where my schedule is incredible flexible and I would love to work with you!I began tutoring during high school and absolutely fell in love with it. At Georgetown, I work at our university writing center, helping students of all years with the writing process. This Fall, I will be presenting my own research on tutoring at the National Conference on Peer Tutoring and Writing. My own tutoring style derives from my experience as a student and the techniques I have been taught in a class I took to become a writing tutor. I firmly believe in fostering a tutor-tutee relationship which thrives off of the strengths of the tutee, using what they do best to help them succeed. I also pride myself in being able to easily adapt to different learning styles and am always filling my toolbox with new ways of approaching our material. My subject areas include mostly the humanities (reading, writing, history, literature). I am also able to help in middle school math as well as test prep for AP US History/Literature, the PSAT, and SAT.I look forward to working with you soon!
I have been a peer tutor for more than three years, and have worked with students in all age groups. I am comfortable with most locations- classrooms, homes, and public places. As a founding member of Tutors For Opportunity, an international tutoring nonprofit, I have worked with students from a variety of cultural and educational backgrounds. These experiences have allowed me to develop a core teaching method for each subjects, and anticipate many of the conceptual difficulties facing students. Moreover, I have insight into recent developments in many subject curricula, particularly those of standardized tests, on account of my experience; I tailor my instruction to match these trends.
