Teaching is absolutely inspiring. Nothing beats the "ah ha" moment a student gets when he or she realizes that they can achieve what they deemed "impossible." People are capable of much more than they think, and, often, it just takes a little encouragement for people to reach new potentials. I want my students to make connections and discover how much fun learning can be.As a tutor I strive to engage, challenge, and inspire growth in my students.

I recently received my masters at the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University, and I grew up in Washington, D.C. I went to college at Georgetown University and have loved reading and writing my entire life. While I enjoy tutoring all kinds of essay skills, english literature is my favorite. I love poetry, plays, and fiction classics -- everything from Shakespeare to Shelly! My dad is a lawyer, and has taught me the value of strong argumentation skills. I have published everything from short stories to journalistic articles, in my college paper or at The New York Times. Most students come to me for my encouraging spirit and fun attitude because I always want to make learning a positive experience. Writing an essay or dissecting a book really boils down to the art of storytelling -- and I think, no matter your age, we all can appreciate to the transformative power of stories. Not everyone finds their words easily, and some even feel ashamed to take time to express themselves. But I was a ballet dancer for ten years, and I think my rigor, determination, and sense of balance passes on to my students. I like to explore the city with my friends, see a play on the weekend, or take a book to central park for an afternoon of reading.

After years of coaching GMAT students across a wide range of score levels, I've found that many advanced students underperform not because they lack ability, but because they approach questions inefficientlytreating each problem like a new puzzle instead of recognizing recurring execution patterns quickly and systematically. I earned my MBA from Georgetown University and worked as a former Sony engineer, bringing a data-driven and strategic mindset to every session. Hi, my name is Emily. I graduated with honors from Georgetown University with a degree in Comparative Literature, Linguistics and Chinese. I am passionate about all things language, from the measly article to the next great American Novel. While working for a while in the private sector and as a freelancer abroad, I realized that what I was truly passionate about was mentoring and teaching people, sharing my love of language and literature. Thus far, I have worked with English as a Second Language learners in Taipei, and worked as a freelance English Editor of resumes, college application essays, cover letters and more. As a tutor, I am always looking for new fun and creative ways to engage students in the material, to help them see the ins and outs of how language is put together whether its a sentence or a five-paragraph persuasive essay. My academic background in linguistics and comparative literature provide not only a grounding in the English language and the finer points of grammatical analysis, but also gives me a foundation in literary theory. I am well equipped to work with students through the analysis of dense passages of fiction and non-fiction, as well as parse out any grammatical and usage errors they may have. This gives students the opportunity to understand the how and why of language as opposed to simply memorizing arbitrary rules. Finally, with a Chinese minor from Georgetown and a Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL) proficiency of 5 (fluent), and having learned Chinese myself as a foreign language, I feel equipped to help beginner to intermediate learners of Chinese accomplish their language goals in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. I have participated and observed in many language classrooms and am prepared with strategies to overcome common problems in Mandarin learning (the characters, the tones, the "lack of" grammar etc.).Outside of tutoring, I am still dedicated to education and am pursuing a masters of education at the Relay Graduate School of Education. When not thinking about how to further knowledge in the next generation I enjoy cooking, dancing, and watching foreign cinema.Ultimately, what is most important is putting the improvement of the student first, and to that end I am always receptive to comments and suggestions. Please do not hesitate to ask questions, we cannot learn without inquiry!

I believe in the growth mindset, meaning that every student has the capacity to achieve and grow. I tell my students that I believe in them, and that with hard work and my support, they can achieve and even exceed their goals. When students believe this as well, they are more motivated to work hard because they believe that hard work begets results.I think it is critical to build a relationship with my students, so that I can identify the methods and strategies that will be most effective for them. I begin by getting to know my students on a personal level, learning about their passions, what motivates them, what frustrates them, and which learning strategies have been successful for them. I believe I need to earn their trust by being on time, prepared, and consistent in my work as a tutor. By building this personal relationship, I have the information I need to customize our tutoring experiences in a way that will be most effective for my students. My professional experience is varied; I run a business bringing creative problem-solving to education. I am currently teaching a college course, I was a 7th grade English teacher, and I have worked as a marketing executive and design thinking consultant, and own my own business. I bring my rich experiences to sessions, which helps me identify creative ways of delivering and explaining material.Perhaps most importantly, I truly love to learn. I believe that learning can and should be a joyful experience, and that when students enjoy learning - even productive struggle - they succeed. I am a senior at Georgetown University pursuing a bachelors degree in Biology of Global Health with a pre-medical concentration. My experience includes tutoring and coaching lacrosse to kids ages 5 to 16 for the last 5 years. I am enthusiastic, patient, relaxed, and organized. I really enjoy tutoring the following subjects: Biology, Spanish, Math, English/Writing, and U.S. History. I have always had a passion for science, particularly biology, which is one of the reasons that I plan to attend medical school in a few years. Writing is one of my favorite subjects to tutor as my liberal arts education at Georgetown has taught me how to successfully write papers, articles, and essays for biology, chemistry, history, philosophy, and psychology. I am currently working with a professor and another colleague to publish a project that we have developed that uses ethical leadership as a framework for the Olympic games to address health issues within a host country.Outside of tutoring and being a student, I enjoy playing and coaching sports like lacrosse, volleyball, basketball, kickboxing, and snowboarding. I currently play lacrosse for Georgetown and coach locally. My experiences on teams and as a collegiate athlete have taught me communication, leadership, and organizational skills. These experiences have shaped much of my tutoring philosophy. I believe that patience and positive motivation are crucial to helping students achieve their academic or athletic goals. At the same time, as a student and athlete I know that practice and repetition are the keys to fully understanding whatever material is being taught. As a tutor, it is my responsibility to offer a variety of tools and concepts in order for a student to find the best method to reach their academic goals and to build confidence.

5+ Years Tutoring

I am a recent graduate of Georgetown University, where I received my Bachelor of Science in International Affairs with a focus on the intersection of the environment and international politics in the former Soviet Union. I am an intrepid traveler and have visited 26 countries, mostly in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. I tutor a broad range of subjects, but I am most passionate about literature, writing, and social studies. When it comes to tutoring for Standardized Tests, I love working with students to perfect their essays and doing math drills. Outside of tutoring, my interests and hobbies include studying languages, drawing, reading (Russian literature and presidential biographies).
