I graduated from the University of Southern California with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology, and completed some graduate coursework at Loyola Marymount University in order to receive my teaching credential in Biological Sciences. I have experience both as a tutor, working with high school students in AP Chemistry, and a classroom teacher, working with middle school students in Life & Physical Sciences. I have a broad range of subjects that I am comfortable tutoring in, ranging from English and essay editing to Algebra and middle school math. But I am most passionate (and get most geeked out about) teaching science, especially topics in Biology and Life Science, because I love learning about how our living world works! My teaching philosophy revolves around students harnessing their strengths to become independent learners, and my job is to facilitate making those connections. Outside of education, I love spending time outdoors and doing yoga (a combination of both would be ideal!).

I attended Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas for high school where I graduated with honors and then moved out to California to attend Loyola Marymount University to continue what the Jesuits like to refer to as "Cura Personalis" or "Education of the Whole Person." At LMU I majored in English Literature, but I also had the opportunity to engage in creative writing of all types and flavors including but not limited to poetry, fictional prose, playwriting, and various forms of journalism. I minored in Archaeology, which blended my love of history with my passion for anthropology. I acted as the Assistant Curator at LMU's on campus museum, which grew during my tenure by 60% in terms of donations and acquisitions. As the Curator I had the opportunity to give lectures and tutor college-aged students in history, art, architecture, and historical preservation. I graduated Loyola Marymount University with honors, and decided to attend Southwestern Law School. At Southwestern, I specialized in criminal law, labor law, civil procedure, and constitutional law. I graduated Southwestern, attained my Juris Doctor, and sat for the California Bar Exam in July. Above all things, I prize academic prowess and the desire to learn and master more. As such, I chose a career in which I know I can act as a constant student and a constant teacher. Such a level of dedication is required, in fact, because the law is fluid and in a constant state of flux.I tutor in history, English literature of all types (writing, reading comprehension, analytical thinking), government, and politics. Throughout my educational and professional career I have been regarded as an exceptional writer. I have actually had the opportunity to edit many publications which have appeared in print as well as online. As such, I am adept at aiding students in how to be their own editors and how to see the gaps in their writing and where they need improvement. My favorite subject to tutor is history. I especially love world history. My hobbies include keeping physically active. I love to play basketball and beach volleyball. I enjoy playing golf, but I'm not very good. Golf is an activity which I picked up in my adult life. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. I also enjoy watching movies, reading good books, hiking, cooking, and generally keeping an open mind. I constantly find new activities that I enjoy.

As an education enthusiast, I am dedicated to the process of learning through interactive efforts. I believe in a holistic approach that incorporates the various learning styles of auditory, visual, kinesthetic and those (like myself) that must physically feel the pen hit the paper. I am fun, friendly, and passionate about helping students succeed and gain confidence in subjects they may have felt uneasy about previously.

I am a graduate of Loyola Marymount University. I received my Bachelor of Science in Biology and played four years of Division 1 soccer. I will be attending medical school in Fall 2019 at Creighton University. With 7 years of tutoring under my belt, 4 of which included working as a peer tutor for LMU Athletics, I have developed a strong passion for assisting others inside and out of the classroom to reach successful academic goals. I believe having a strong foundation in education is important for future success in our careers and relationships. As a STEM major, I have focused on tutoring in math and sciences as I enjoy working through problems with my students in an engaging manner and finding which methods work for them. Along with tutoring, I am a licensed EMT and perform clinical oncology research for UCLA. In my spare time, I enjoy running, working out, reading, and playing soccer.

I'm passionate about guiding students in the world of philosophy and the humanities more broadly. With 7 years of teaching experience at the college level and many years of tutoring outside of college, I know what it's like to be stuck and lost in navigating difficult concepts. My educational philosophy has been based on the premise that :I believe thatEvery child can learn and has the potential to succeed.Every student is an individual and has their own individual learning style.Every student should be assessed in the way that allows them to best express their abilities.Learning should be student centered & curriculum based on the needs of the students in align with the state standards as a guide.Learning should be authentic and interdisciplinary.Learning should be interactive, engaging and creative. If the student is not engaged , able to interact with the teacher & able to express one self creatively than learning is no longer taking place bc the student has checked out:(.The classroom climate is set by the teacher's attitude which should be positive & focused on the progress & attempts by learner not just the result. The classroom creates a family of learners, working together for the common goal of learning a little bit more each day & encouraging all attempts to take risks in their educational journey! The classroom should be a safe, inviting and stimulating environment where depending on the needs of each learner is student focused or teacher directed / modeled .As a teacher , my main goal is to get to know each child & see what motivates them to just "try" & take a risk (whether it's getting their mouth ready to sound out a word or holding their pencil & trying to write any part of the first letter of just/her name & to access their unique style of learning & provide engaging , creative, brain growing lessons. I don't believe that any individual whether child or adult is able to grow in their learning if they are scared of a negative consequence to their attempt to try & take a risk in their learning. Positive reinforcement & praising my student for their attempts & getting the student to try a little bit more each time we meet is my way of creating a learning environment engaging to all. I meet my student where they are at & take them where they need to be!As a parent of three drastically different but so unique & gifted kiddos in their own way; I have celebrated their attempts as well as their accomplishments. The simple mottos of "just try" & "mistakes are proof of us trying in our house" led to two honor roll students in high school & my youngest in the gifted self-contained program. I taught all three of my children to read & print when their fathers work had us traveling most of the year. It was challenging & so fun ... but learning should be:)!The most important thing I did as a parent & educator at that time was to learn a new skill while teaching my kids because it helped me empathize so much with all the information overload that we have a tendency to put on their growing brains & it reminded me of what it feels like to not get something right away when it is so easy for everyone else. Because of my ADHD this skill was so hard & so challenging to learn bc there was so much information & it was all new! Normally that would be fine but all of the students learning with me picked it up so easily . I had to work twice as hard & study twice as hard as my fellow students but it was totally worth it . Not only was it worth it for me to take risks & keep trying even though I didn't get it (boy , I was frustrated at times)but it immensely helped as a parent & educator to slow down , to celebrate any & all attempts made , and to breathe ...with enough practice, patience & encouragement my kids or students would get it. My main objective with your child is to give them courage to take risks with me & feel safe to "just try".I look forward for the opportunity to work with your child & getting to know your child so that we can have an educational experience that will give them confidence to take risks in their learning career each & every day!Ms. Nicole

I am a former Teach For America corps member who spent several years teaching English and writing in New York City and Atlanta classrooms, working with students from middle school through high school in both classroom and one on one settings. I hold a Master of Fine Arts from Loyola Marymount University and an undergraduate degree in Strategic Communications and Journalism from Ohio State University, which gave me a deep foundation in writing, composition, and communication at every level. My approach is always to meet students where they are. Whether a student is struggling with essay structure, working through a reading assignment, or trying to find their own voice as a writer, I focus on building real skills and genuine confidence rather than just getting through the assignment. I am also a working television writer with credits on Amazon and Peacock series, which means I bring a practical understanding of how strong writing actually works beyond the classroom.
