As a young woman with a passionate interest in helping others improve their lives, I earned my first bachelor's degree in Education, followed by a second in Interior Design. Though I loved teaching, my affinity for creative business endeavors led me to pursue Interior Design. After working for many years with my own company in Interior Design, I found myself ready to explore new horizons in the corporate world of real estate. My family was and is still heavily involved for many years in both residential sales and development, as well as a few have migrated into commercial real estate sales and development.In Phoenix, I worked with a real estate company specializing in new home sales, working with both new home buyers and residential real estate investors. As I built my real estate clientele, I grew and developed my own investment real estate company with more than 30 agents in Scottsdale, AZ in the mid 2000's. This unfolded through my participation in AZREIA, one of the nation's largest personal real estate investment associations at that time. I held workshops, spoke at the National Convention for 3 years, was an Instructor with the Commercial Real Estate Institute, and wrote monthly newsletter articles for the Association's Monthly Newsletter over a four-year period.I was featured as a Master Investor on the cover of Personal Real Estate Investor Magazine, and also as Broker of the month in Broker Magazine, and was a sought-after speaker and advisor within the real estate investment community. I appeared on radio, and in front of national audiences, discussing not only real estate investment, but also personal development, and the virtues of also investing in oneself, in all areas of true wealth. Personal Development is one of my passions and in my free time, taking self-improvement classes brings me joy.

In 2007, I received my Bachelor of Science in Psychology, with Minors in both Sociology and English, from MTSU. I spent several years in the medical field before deciding to pursue a career in education. I completed a summer residency with Nashville Teaching Fellows in 2011 before entering the classroom in the 2011-12 school year. I still maintain an active TN teaching license for English grades 7-12. All of my classroom teaching experience has occurred in non-traditional school settings. As the first generation college graduate in my family, I understand the challenges students often face when navigating the school system in both K-12 and college settings. This unique perspective motivated me to work with students that were often struggling with school or lacked the motivation to tap into their potential. As far as my teaching style and philosophy, I believe that every student can achieve greatness and there is always room for growth. I often approach learning with out of the box thinking, and use materials that engage the student, allowing them to make connections and learn concepts with topics that interest them. Once a foundation is laid, it can easily be built upon by applying the same techniques with other texts or materials that may not be quite as interesting, yet still required to demonstrate mastery of a skill. I have a record of success in my classroom, and was recognized as having the highest growth for English III in my district for the 2014-2015 school year. My favorite subjects to teach and tutor are Literature and Writing. I believe words are powerful, even more so when you dive into their often unspoken meanings. My educational background is in mathematics education. This means I studied how to do math and how students learn math. I graduated with a PhD from North Carolina State University and since then, I've taught math for K-12 future teachers as well as math courses for non-STEM majors. I also taught high school math before going to graduate school. I am passionate about helping students overcome their fear and anxiety about math. Math can be a difficult subject, but I enjoy helping students understand both the how and why of mathematics. I want my students to gain confidence in their abilities to problem solve.

The best educators / teachers will say that seeing students have the "light bulb" moment is what keeps them in the profession and what makes the struggle worthwhile. I know it's why I began teaching and why I choose to continue in the profession.I first encountered this feeling when I was a tutor for math and science students in college. I was able to help students reach that feeling often over the course of the semester, and even over the course of a session.After I began teaching, I found students certainly benefit from a skilled and committed teacher. But not nearly as much as they can from a skilled tutor.
