I am particularly motivated by the opportunity to help high school students develop their English skills, as I believe that strong communication is essential for their future success. I have wanted to be a teacher in some form since I was a child. I love watching my students grow and realize their potential. I have taught second grade, fourth grade, and eight grade science. I have observed all classroom levels kindergarten through sixth grade and even had student teaching in those grade levels. I have a degree from Middle Tennessee State University in Interdisciplinary Studies K-6. I tutor the core subjects (math, English/reading, science, social studies) up until eighth grade. I also tutor for Admissions, College Application Essays, and Writing. My favorite subjects to tutor are math, science, and writing. I think science and writing are a lot of fun, and I love that math has a definite answer. I believe in relationships first and want to build a strong relationship with my students before we get down to learning. I believe students learn best from people they like and people that are funny or personable. I like to laugh and bring humor to my teaching and help understand where students are at so I can bring them closer to their goal. When I'm not teaching, I am taking care of my family, enjoying a nice coffee, growing flowers and plants, and finding a new tv show to watch.

If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough. -Albert EinsteinAfter completing 4 years of work experience as a business valuation analyst and level 3 of the CFA program, I have taken some time to travel (before Covid) and begin teaching online. My expertise is in options, futures, forwards, swaps and other financial derivatives, which I studied both at Middle Tennessee State University and the London School of Economics. I gained valuable tutoring experience in university after being offered a position in the finance lab as a head tutor, and have since found that those skills have translated well to helping business students thrive at Varsity Tutors. While I also tutor other subjects including Spanish and College English, I have found working with professionals seeking designations or motivated college business students looking to get ahead to be a great fit for me.I now work in business development for a venture capital firm whose operators have created over $3.0B in exit value. Teaching ExperienceI am a life-long learner and enjoy assisting students of all ages, with all sorts of subjects, developing that same desire. The desire to question, the desire to know that you know, not just that the instructor says that it is so. The ability to know accounting, to engage in successful public speaking, to start that business, to develop that presentation, is within the reach of all of us. The biggest thing that stands in the path of most students is an unwillingness to try. If one keeps in mind that on the road to accounting success, to public speaking success, to building that business, to completing that knock-out presentation, is that there will be bumps along the road but there are no road blocks!I have developed and delivered countless speeches, sermons, and seminars. I am proficient in all Microsoft office products, including PowerPoint and Word! I enjoy assisting, facilitating that learning experience in students of all ages. Of essence is your willingness to succeed, if that is there, if you are willing to put in the time, then we can master any material! Some of the courses I have facilitated include...FP/120 – Essential of Personal Finance – 3 credit hoursETH/316 – Ethics and Social Responsibility – 3 credit hoursACC/290 – Principles of Accounting I – 3 credit hoursACC/291 – Principles of Accounting II – 3 credit hoursACC/300 – Principles of Accounting – 3 credit hoursACC/421 – Intermediate Financial Accounting I – 3 credithoursACC/422 – Intermediate Financial Accounting II – 3 credithoursACC/423 – Intermediate Financial Accounting III – 3 credithoursACC/491 – Contemporary Auditing I – 3 credit hoursACC/492 – Contemporary Auditing II – 3 credit hoursACC/537 – Financial Accounting – 3 credit hoursBBA/373 – Applied Accounting for Business Decisions – 3credit hoursMBA/557 – Accounting Applications for Management – 3 credithoursIf you were to ask my students what sets me apart from other instructors they would tell you that I actually enjoy doing what I do, I am not just doing it for a pay check but rather, it is because I like seeing the light bulb go off with a student when they finally get a concept, when they have developed the confidence to accomplish a task, when they value knowing not just because it will help them with a test, an exam, or with homework, but because they actually have developed the skills that will enable them to know!

Light sparkles in the eyes of every engaged student, from K4 early readers to 12th-grade senior-thesis authors; and from dedicated life-long adult learners to "night-before-the-big-test" college-crammers. Fifteen years as both private and contracted tutor has profoundly enriched me as witness of the light of knowledge emerging in receptive minds. I can't wait to meet you!For me, tutoring must be more than a lecture session starring *me.* Instead, I seek to thoughtfully engage each student in dialogue, using open-ended questions: "What did you notice about that letter?" or "If you were building a city, what would you do?" or "Why do you think looking at the twinkling stars inspired ancient scientists to develop systems of mathematics?" Such questions help create an environment in which new ideas are safe, exciting, and heard.Although math was always my favorite subject in school, I also find such joy in tutoring communication arts as an adult.Leading students to effectively communicate their knowledge impacts literally every course of study, no matter the age or field. The foundation concepts of communication and literacy, laid well, produce life-improving fruits that will accompany each individual throughout life's duration. That's amazing to me!Third grade thru high school, and college thru adult students benefit greatly from simple, straightforward methods of building words, sentences, paragraphs, and essays.Foreign language learning is a critical key of humanity's interdependent growth. While attending the University of Vienna, Austria, I had my first contracted tutor job with a group of soldiers from the Austrian army, teaching English as a second language. All these concepts lead seamlessly into the grammar needed for foreign language study. My BA in German language is a demonstration of this love of language. Additionally, I have studied 4 years of French, 2 years of Spanish, and recently began Mandarin Chinese.Truly, I eagerly anticipate working with you, as we journey, learning and growing together!

I graduated from MTSU with a B.A. in English and a minor in Religion. I tutored at the University Writing Center there, working with writers of all backgrounds and levels of experience. Typically, I saw a string of writers with little time to engage with them as individuals, so Im especially happy about having the opportunity to engage with students on a more substantive level. Im a creative writer who has worked on the staffs of multiple literary journals, and I always try to bring that creative perspective of language to my sessions, whether in my interactions with students or in my lesson plans. First, regardless of the subject, well look at the patterns present in the material, and then, well work our way into understanding the conceptual bases of the subjects at large. Tutoring should always be a collaborative effort that encompasses a way of learning beyond any particular subject. By the end of our sessions together, I hope that you will have learned how to teach yourself; fostering that sense of independence is my main goal.Even though I specialize in material geared toward the English language, the humanities, and the social sciences, I have a background in natural scienceecology and microbiologyand have done a fair amount of basic research in those areas. I am always happy to return to those roots with you! I work from multiple frameworks that adapt to not only each individual student, but also their progress and its ever-changing trajectories. Rather than relying on visual learning, which I myself tend to do, I try to connect the visual with the verbal in order to tune eyes and ears to the metaphors that are the basis of any subject. In my spare time, I write poetry, so I highly value fluidity and dynamism in all aspects of education. Because of my love for understanding the aural/verbal styles of learning, I tend to work well with multilingual students and others who are revisiting the process of learning and loving English! My academic background: After high school, I attended UT-Knoxville on a full-ride as a member of their Scholars Program. Overall, I was very successful with my college applications and can help you with all aspects of that process. Admittedly, I changed my major many, many times, but that journey has led me to my love of writing and a wealth of knowledge from diverse areas and subjects! My specialties include poetry and drama; definitely contact me if youre doing either!

In 2007, I received my Bachelor of Science in Psychology, with Minors in both Sociology and English, from MTSU. I spent several years in the medical field before deciding to pursue a career in education. I completed a summer residency with Nashville Teaching Fellows in 2011 before entering the classroom in the 2011-12 school year. I still maintain an active TN teaching license for English grades 7-12. All of my classroom teaching experience has occurred in non-traditional school settings. As the first generation college graduate in my family, I understand the challenges students often face when navigating the school system in both K-12 and college settings. This unique perspective motivated me to work with students that were often struggling with school or lacked the motivation to tap into their potential. As far as my teaching style and philosophy, I believe that every student can achieve greatness and there is always room for growth. I often approach learning with out of the box thinking, and use materials that engage the student, allowing them to make connections and learn concepts with topics that interest them. Once a foundation is laid, it can easily be built upon by applying the same techniques with other texts or materials that may not be quite as interesting, yet still required to demonstrate mastery of a skill. I have a record of success in my classroom, and was recognized as having the highest growth for English III in my district for the 2014-2015 school year. My favorite subjects to teach and tutor are Literature and Writing. I believe words are powerful, even more so when you dive into their often unspoken meanings. In my spare time I read everything I can get my hands on, re-purpose furniture, and explore real estate.
