I am a native Seattleite, who graduated from Seattle Pacific University with a bachelor's degree in psychology and Elementary Education (K-8). I later received my master's degree in social work from the University of Washington. I taught grades 1-3 in Boston, Massachusetts (private school) and in Monroe, Washington (public school). I am passionate about helping children navigate through life both educationally and emotionally and found great satisfaction in working in Social Services for 11 years in a non-profit that provided mentors for children from single parent homes. While I was raising my children, I began tutoring Reading part time in public schools and found that I absolutely love working with emerging readers in small groups or one to one. It is extremely satisfying helping a child become a strong reader, as it influences their success in every subject area. I try to instill a love for books in my students, while using humor and positive encouragement. I strongly believe that children need support at home, both by being read to and reading to their family members. Following this period of learning loss due to the Covid epidemic, I am enjoying working with students to provide phonics-based early reading education.

I have been teaching and tutoring math for the last ten years. I enjoy looking at a problem and seeing if there are different ways to solve it, which makes the process a little more interesting than working onit with just one method. One thing I have found to be helpful is to think of possible errors one might make while working on a problem, which allows the concepts to sink in even more.

Hi all! I'm a fiction writer and movie nerd here to help with any form of writing and/or editing. I have an MFA in creative writing from Portland State University and a BA in English from Seattle Pacific University. I recently taught composition (levels 1 and 2) at Northwest Kansas Technical College. The part of teaching I enjoyed the most was working with students one-on-one to give them tips that were specific to their writing voices. If that sounds like the kind of help you need, I'd love to try and give you a hand.

I'm getting my Master's in Philosophy at the CUNY Graduate Center after spending the last few years traveling the world and teaching English. As a teacher in South Korea and in India, I've had the privilege of teaching students of all ages (from early childhood to adult professionals) and ability levels. I tutor a variety of subjects in humanities and language arts; with a BA in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University, it's no surprise that my passion is helping students improve their writing skills. In my experience, everyone has a writer within, and unlocking that potential is one of my favorite experiences. Working in the rigorous educational environment of South Korea gave me experience helping students prepare for standardized tests of all kinds--and I know how students feel, because I recently took the GRE.I love to teach and I love to learn--and I want all my students to feel the same way. When students have a good time learning, they learn better and achieve more. In my experience, helping students explore their own creativity and build their critical thinking skills can help them excel in all subjects. Every student has their own learning style, and every learning style can be successful. I get to know what my students enjoy and what drives them, and help them align their education with their style and their goals.I grew up in a small Oregon town where I thought I would never do anything exciting--but my education has led me all around the world. I've studied drama in South Africa and Shakespeare in Oxford. I love going new places, encountering other cultures, and--yes--trying new foods. I'm a huge baseball fan and I love games of all kinds--Settlers of Catan is a favorite. I love novels and movies; sci-fi and fantasy are my favorites.

I'm a graduate of Miami University (in Oxford, Ohio) with a BA in English. I'm also a graduate of Seattle Pacific University, where I earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in fiction writing. I've published four collections of original short fiction, with a fifth coming in 2024. I also serve as an adjunct professor of fiction writing and introduction to creative writing, where I teach to classrooms of students and where I also advise students in a 1:1 capacity on their capstone writing projects. I love it. I love writing and I love, love, love to teach. Interacting with my students, helping them grow and learn about writing and helping them find their unique voices as writers is a tremendous pleasure. It feels like important work to me, and I take it really seriously. I think everybody has something unique and important to say via writing. Whether that person hates to write and is doing it only for an assignment or is incredibly passionate about it. It's what makes me most excited to tutor!

I am a Mechanical Engineering student at Seattle Pacific University, and I love to help others grasp challenging concepts. I enjoy filling in gaps in students' understanding as well as working with students who are new to a subject. In the past, I have worked with students on a variety of mathematics subjects such as: algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. I am confident I can help students grasp just about any math concept. I have always had a drive to understand things completely and this has has helped me develop a comprehensive understanding of high school and early college mathematics and physics. Mathematics and physics are my favorite subjects to tutor because I appreciate the consistent logic that is fundamental to these to these topics. I am confident I can help any student grasp difficult math concepts.I take a systematic, analytical approach to most effectively and efficiently improve the mathematic and/or scientific ability of my clients. In doing this, I follow a four-step process:1) identify the specific, problematic concepts2) develop teaching strategies tailored to the student's age level and personality3) work through the concepts with the student4) use continuous check-ins to make sure the student is truly learning the material, making appropriate changes to my teaching style when necessary.Outside of academics, I love to be creative and to exercise outdoors. Crochet and writing are two of my favorite creative activities. Also, as a result of my participation in band and choir throughout high school, I like to listen to, learn, and write music. Lastly, I love to bike and swim. Whether it is a short ride to the river or a 300-mile ride to the Oregon coast, biking satisfies my inner desire for freedom, and the destination often involves a cool place to dive in.

We all need a little help now and then.Common education does a decent job of imparting information, but different people sometimes need a different approach, a little push, supplemental explanation or special practice so that they can truly understand and succeed with a subject... and in life. Part of my tutoring process is to listen and discern what is really at the root of the student's learning challenges. Sometimes it turns out that the real problem isn't the subject at all, but the way it is being taught, a lack of study time or space, or even a completely unrelated frustration. My goal is to help people strengthen their study habits and deepen their thinking skills so that they can grow in true understanding and experience success. This usually means not providing direct answers, but helping the student learn how to find the answer on his own.My areas of strength include:- Philosophy (including ethics, logic, critical thinking and rhetoric)- Theology and Religion (especially Catholic/Christian)- Writing (essays, project papers and theses; creative, research and persuasive styles)- Physics and Natural Sciences- Mathematics (pre-algebra, algebra 1 and 2, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, etc.)- Computer Science and Engineering- General test preparation, especially ACT, PSAT and SAT- Developing good study habitsOf these, philosophy is my favorite subject by far.I work best with teens and older, have been doing so since about 1990, and am presently an adjunct faculty member at Chemeketa Community College. I prefer to meet in person with people who are in or near McMinnville, OR, especially if we are working from your textbooks. For clients more than 20 miles away, we can meet half-way, you are welcome to come to my office (or another location of your choosing), or we can meet online by video-chat. E-mail or telephone can work, too, depending on the subject.I have received the following degrees and certifications:- Master of Arts in Philosophy from Holy Apostles College and Seminary- Master of Theological Studies from University of Dallas- Bachelor of Science in Physics and Engineering (double major) from Seattle Pacific University- Online Teaching, MOOC Development, and Philosophical Counseling certificationsWhen I'm not working from home or caring for my family, I'm usually found at my gym where I teach physical fitness and self-defense. I also enjoy woodworking, writing, and various martial arts.

I graduated from Seattle Pacific University with a BA in Applied Linguistics, and am currently enrolled in my MAT program at Concordia University in Portland, Oregon. My teaching experience is very diverse, beginning with teaching ESL to refugees through World Relief and the World Trade Center to teaching English to Japanese high school students in Japan. I have been homeschooling for 15 years while developing and teaching a Latin program at a local private school for grades 5-9. I have spent several years as a phonics and reading tutor for early readers as well.I am passionate about helping each of my students develop a love of learning, self-confidence and success in and out of the classroom. My greatest joy is helping to unlock a student's potential through literacy and language. I believe reading and writing create exciting opportunities for each student to accomplish great things! My experiences learning Ancient Greek, Latin and French have given me great tools to help students identify and solve the problems that hinder learning. With an eclectic teaching style, I learn to best identify and help my students depending on their needs, learning styles, and goals.

After graduating from Seattle Pacific University I taught for 10 years in public and private schools. I have taught a variety of grades and subjects ranging from preschool-8th grade. I have been tutoring for over 10 years and find absolute joy in tutoring as I am able to help students overcome obstacles, difficulties, meet goals, and be challenged. After leaving the traditional classroom teaching setting for tutoring I also became an outdoor forest educator and love to discuss the outdoors. I love to teach children about the outdoors and the environment and get into how science works. Even when I tutor in reading and math when a kid asks why they made an error like flipping a number or letter this is such a fun opportunity to talk briefly about how the brain works and open up that door into science. I have experience working with dyslexia and dyscalcula when tutoring in reading and math. I have experience tutoring in math from preschool through Algebra 2. I love working with students in math and seeing how they light up when it finally clicks. I enjoy math myself as I see it as a puzzle or game just waiting to be solved. I also have experience tutoring in reading, writing, and grammar in preschool through elementary school. These topics can be difficult and frustrating for so many or lack confidence that sometimes they need someone to cheer them along the way and be willing to try various things to figure out what tactic works for them.
