My name is Amanda Pursel and I am a freshman at Shippensburg University this year. I am majoring in Elementary Education and minoring in Psychology. I have a love for working with kids and have been volunteering in classrooms since my junior year of high school. Senior year I spent every day after school in a first grade classroom with kids. On breaks from college, I work as a substitute aid in my school district at home and have helped over 40 kids with different subjects and things they struggle with. I aspire to become a successful first grade teacher one day, and maybe after that even an elementary school guidance counselor. My passion for the Spanish language began about seven years ago when I was still in high school. It is something I wanted to pursue farther in my life and I have achieved that goal. I have a year experience tutoring university students and non traditional university students with beginning to intermediate/advanced Spanish. It is rewarding when students return to tell me that they did well on a quiz or exam. This was a paid position that I earned, and I had to be appointed and approved by several professors to get the job that I did. This means my grades in Spanish were exceptional. I would love to work with students of any age and would be willing to adapt to different learning styles.As far as other experience goes, I lived and studied in Salamanca, Spain for three months as well as lived and studied in Samara, Monteverde, and Buena Vista, Costa Rica for two weeks. I have also traveled to other Spanish speaking countries such as Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. I have a strong passion for the language and everyday I strive to be better than I was yesterday. Living in these foreign countries helped me learn faster and even more than if I would have stayed in the States, because being forced to speak the language and make mistakes is all part of the learning process and if mistakes aren't made, neither is progress.What makes me an excellent tutor aside from my fluency in the language is my ability to be flexible. I don't have a certain "style" of tutoring, because that may not work for all students. Instead, I ask the students how they would like to best and then I adapt my teaching ways to what I believe they will benefit from the most.

I am a graduate of Bayero University Kano in Nigeria, and Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania. I have a BS in Zoology, with a concentration in herpetology, and an MS in Biology. My interest in the French language comes not only because my home country of Nigeria is bordered by four Francophone countries, but also because I love networking. I learned French at one of the Alliance Franaise centers in my country, and served for some time as a tutor before coming to the United States. I was privileged to work with different age levels, from adults to children.At Shippensburg University, I worked at the learning center for about two years, where I tutored both French and biology (especially ecology & conservation). I enjoyed it because I was able to learn different tutoring and time management strategies, how to effectively work with students with different learning styles and paces, and how to work with students in groups or individually. I was able to help my tutees overcome their fear of learning French, erasing the words "we can't" from our dictionaries and replacing them with "we can." Another interesting thing I was able to teach them was the secret to counting from 21 to infinity within 30 60 minutes.Whenever I am less busy, I love learning about other people's cultures and traveling to see the world.

I have a BS degree from Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania where I majored in Chemistry and minored in Mathematics. I am currently a student at Stony Brook University in the Chemistry MS program. I enjoy tutoring because I am passionate about more people becoming engaged in the STEM fields and I view tutoring as a highly accessible way to that end. Tutoring provides for more intimate and individualized sessions for students to learn STEM subjects, which in turn improves their understanding of the subject. I have over ten years of experience as an Affiliate professor at the graduate and undergraduate levels and have years of experience working with youth in both formal and informal settings.
