I have always loved education and working with my students, and knowing that I've helped the future leaders achieve their goals is rewarding. My other love is writing. I received a BA Degree in English from Southern Illinois University, a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on reading, and Doctorate classes in English at University of Houston. I have tutored students who needed help in composition writing at the college level; nurses who needed help reading medical texts in preparation for test-taking; high school students in writing essay; students needing help in editing essays focusing on grammar as well as content; high school students needing help in reading and understand assignments in different content area classes. I like to tutor any subject having to do with reading a task and understanding the task. I have tutored students needing help in writing essays in varying subject areas -- art, history, science, literature and composition. My teaching and tutoring philosophy focuses on success, so that the student can attain his or her goal. My students and I have a slogan: "Failure is not an option." Because no one takes a class because they want to fail it. At this point in my life, I am a writer. I have published one book; and I am completing another. I have also published short stories in an academic magazine. What do I do when I'm not reading or writing? I go to the movies with my family to see the latest "Star Wars" or "Marvel" or "DC" movies, and then we debate over dinner which superhero is the best. Well, I'm not going to tell you now, which ones I like the best. You'll have to talk to me to find that out!

I am in my 6th year of professional, full-time teaching and have a passion for helping others academically! Education is a major key to success so that students may critically think, problem solve, and learn how to be independent learners. I make it my goal to show students just how what they're learning does relate to real life, by pulling on what they already know, and building on top of that.I have an undergraduate degree in French language from Northern Illinois University, and a Masters degree in Teaching English as a Second or Other Language and Applied Linguistics from Southern Illinois University, with a GPA of 4.0. Aside from French, I also speak basic, conversational Spanish, due to self-taught lessons and extensive travels to Spain. I have worked at schools including Columbia University, Fairfield University, Southern Illinois University, and the language learning company ELS.In my past five years of teaching, I have taught students from kindergarten to university level. My most recent experiences the past couple of years has been teaching adults and young adults academic English; this includes reading skills, writing skills, organization, vocabulary enhancement, speaking fluency, grammar, technology, and research skills. I also have taught academic English writing skills at universities, which benefits my students as they have a teacher who has a strong understanding of the expectations of university-level work!I have always had an open mind towards diversity and value different perspectives, personalities, and cultures. Teaching ESL has taught me that every person is a different learner, and it is important to stay flexible and open, in order to attune my teaching methods according to what each student needs. I have also had the mind-opening experiences of teaching and living in France for two years and have traveled to 13 countries thus far! Traveling always teaches me more about the world and the people in it, and gives me heightened perspectives on how and why different people think.I am an easy-going person, who not only enjoys teaching but also learning from my students! I am highly organized and prepared, but remain flexible in teaching when needed. Aside from teaching, I also enjoy yoga, reading non-fiction, traveling, jogging, bike riding, painting, tasting new foods, and meeting new people. I look forward to tutoring and getting to know you!

I have been playing the guitar and bass for cumulatively 11 years now. So I guess I have played for half of my life. Like many others, I started playing from the inspiration of my father. I have taken lessons with the Warwick-endorsed Jorge Casas, bass player for Gloria Estefans Miami Sound Machine, professor at Greenville College, and Santana collaborator. I participated in the Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville Jazz program for a year and a half until, due to my love of reading and writing, I changed my major to Philosophy while pursuing an English minor. During this time, I took classes such as Music Theory, Aural skills, Jazz Combo, and Jazz Applied Lessons. The lessons were with Zeb Briskovich who just recently went on tour with Jimmy Buffet. Even after my departure from the program, I have continued to progress, and take Guitar lessons from a senior in the program. In my spare time, I play professionally with the funk group, Empire Groove. We have played at local St. Louis venues such as the Delmar Hall, The Blueberry Hill Duck Room, and Kirkwood Station. In the past, I played with 3 metal bands. Im well versed in a variety of genres-Jazz,blues,funk,reggae,metal,punk,rock/roll and can teach through the mediums of written sheet music, tablature, chord charts, or by ear. If you want to get better, I can absolutely guide you in the right direction.

We are all unique and learn in different ways, but we all have the right to be taught in the way that best serves us. My goal as a tutor is to meet my student's needs, instead of asking them to jump through hoops to learn the information.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tutors who attended or graduated from SIUE have direct experience with the university's academic standards, course structures, and expectations. Their firsthand knowledge of SIUE's curriculum and teaching style means they understand exactly what professors are looking for and can help you align your work accordingly. Many have excelled in the same courses and programs you're taking, giving them practical insight into common challenges and effective study strategies.

Alumni and current SIUE students bring authentic perspective on what works at your university—from navigating specific professors' expectations to understanding departmental grading standards. They can share proven strategies they used to succeed in your exact courses and offer mentorship based on their own academic journey. This insider knowledge often translates to faster progress and more targeted, relevant help than tutors without SIUE experience.

Tutors from SIUE work across a wide range of subjects including engineering, business, education, sciences, and liberal arts—reflecting the university's diverse academic programs. Whether you need help with calculus, chemistry, business courses, education theory, or humanities subjects, you can connect with tutors who've successfully completed those same courses at SIUE. Their subject expertise is grounded in real experience with SIUE's rigorous coursework.

Your first session is an opportunity for the tutor to learn about your specific challenges, review your course materials, and understand your academic goals. A SIUE tutor will likely ask about the professors you're working with, the assignments giving you trouble, and your learning style—then share relevant strategies from their own experience in SIUE courses. Together, you'll create a personalized plan tailored to your needs and your university's expectations.

When you reach out to Varsity Tutors, let us know you're looking for a tutor with SIUE background and experience. Varsity Tutors connects you with qualified tutors who match your subject needs and have the SIUE knowledge you're seeking. The matching process takes your specific courses, learning goals, and preferences into account to find the right fit.

Yes—connecting with a tutor who's completed your specific SIUE course is often possible, especially for popular courses across engineering, business, sciences, and general education. Even if a tutor hasn't taken your exact section, having SIUE experience means they understand the university's approach to that subject and can help you master the material effectively. When you describe your course and professor, Varsity Tutors works to match you with someone who has relevant, direct experience.

Absolutely. Beyond subject help, a SIUE tutor can mentor you on time management, study strategies, and navigating university life—all based on their own successful experience. They can share what worked for them in challenging courses, how to work effectively with SIUE professors, and how to make the most of university resources. This mentorship often helps students not just improve grades, but build confidence and academic resilience.

Personalized 1-on-1 instruction from someone familiar with SIUE means your tutor can tailor explanations, examples, and strategies to match your university's specific academic culture and expectations. Rather than generic help, you get guidance grounded in real experience with SIUE's courses, professors, and standards. This targeted approach typically leads to faster understanding, better grades, and a stronger grasp of material that aligns with what your university values.
