I recently graduated from Stuyvesant High School in downtown Manhattan and absolutely love city life. I've had many experiences teaching kids of all ages here and abroad. I tutor subjects in math, science, and english/writing. I also tutor for the ACT(35) and SAT (2160) standardized tests. I have been tutoring since 2011 when I retired from developmental optometry, a specialty in which I saw the same children and adults on a weekly basis, using many of the same concepts that are used in tutoring. I have always enjoyed math which is necessary to understand optics and optometry and now I am pleased to watch my students' "aha" moments when they discover the joy of math. The National Tutoring Association has certified me as a tutor and an academic coach.

I'm a dedicated math tutor with a passion for helping students build confidence and mastery in the subject. I attended the High School of American Studies at Lehman College, a specialized high school known for academic rigor, and co-founded Soaring Minds Tutoring, a nonprofit that supported 8th graders and high schoolers for tests such as the SHSAT Math, Algebra Regents, AP Calculus AB, and for the SAT math section.

After working as a high school English teacher in New York for ten years, I came to Austin to pursue a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction at UT.Working with students on an individual basis is a wonderful opportunity for me to craft a personalized approach to subject matter and techniques. I especially enjoy working with students on their writing, whether personal essays or application statements that they have time to edit and revise, or on-demand writing tasks that appear on tests like the SAT or the AP Exam.

I am a recent graduate from Stony Brook University where I earned a Master's of Science and a Bachelor's of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering. I am currently looking for work as an Automotive, Aerospace, or Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Engineer. On the side, I like to pursue my passion for teaching by tutoring in Math and Science. As a High School Spanish Teacher, I have the experience to tutor students with different learning styles. I absolutely love teaching! I've taught ESL, Spanish and Italian to students ages 7 through adulthood! I teach Spanish and Italian in a high school during the day and then teach ESL to adults and young children two evenings each week. During the summer months you'd think I'd rest right? Nope! I take my amazing 12 year old son and we travel to Central America to help build homes during the morning hours and I then spend the afternoons alternating between a middle school and a high school teaching ESL. I'm a biology student at Stony Brook University and a past researcher in neuroscience and x-ray protein crystallography. My background has been heavy handed with Biology and Chemistry courses and has drawn on a thorough and frequent use of algebra as a basis for most of my work. I grew up in Queens, NY and attended a small private school for most of my education prior to university. Having been a student in a small high school and a student in a huge university, I most definitely have an appreciation for personalized attention when endeavoring to learn any subject.

I have recently completed my final semester at Adelphi University, and I have received my Master's Degree in Literacy from Birth-Grade 12. Prior to attending Adelphi, I completed my Bachelor's Degree at Stony Brook University; graduating with a double major in English (Education) and Philosophy, and a minor in Political Science. I have my New York State Provisional English Teacher Certification for Grades 7-12 and Literacy Birth-Grade 12.During my studies for my undergraduate degree, I had a very positive learning experience student teaching both middle school and high school students in the Bayport-Bluepoint School District. I taught English in three seventh grade inclusion classes, and three tenth grade inclusion classes. I was successfully able to practice and understand how to differentiate instruction and scaffold my lessons. By becoming familiar with the different ability levels within the classrooms, I was able to meet the individual learning needs of my students, as well as tune in to their specific learning styles. I used this information to inform how I approached cooperative learning and assessments. This experience prepared me to embark on a career as a teacher by guiding my lesson planning, and helping me incorporate the NYS Common Core Standards into the lessons I taught.I am currently an English Substitute at Eastport-South Manor Junior-Senior High School. I teach mainly English classes from grades 7-12. This teaching experience is valuable, because I work closely with teachers and get to know the students very well. I have learned how to adapt to any classroom and execute any lessons that teachers have left for me to teach. Through my experience substitute teaching, I have learned a lot about myself as a teacher, and have strengthened my classroom management skills. Along with substitute teaching in this school district, I have also completed two leave replacement positions in my building. The first was a two-month leave replacement for a high school AIS English teacher in the spring of 2014. The second leave replacement also lasted two months, and it was for a middle school Wilson reading specialist in the fall of 2014. Both of these leave replacements helped me grow as an educator by teaching me how to plan and structure lessons and adapt my teaching to meet my student's needs. I hope to have my own English classroom one day, or even work as a reading specialist. My goal as an educator is to help students become independent and active learners, while engaging students in higher-level thinking skills.

Hello! I've always believed that learning should feel supportive, inspiring, and even fun. When I was growing up, I didn't always have the guidance I needed at home, and I often wished for a teacher who could really understand me. That's why I'm so passionate about tutoringI want to be that relatable, encouraging teacher for my students, the one who helps them feel seen and capable. I am an experienced multi-subject teacher, who has had the great fortune to have been educated in several countries, and to teach in several countries. I received my education at Manhattan School of Music, Columbia University, the Universitaet Mozarteum, in Salzburg, Austria, University of Virginia, and Oxford. I have taught in the US, UK, Austria and Japan, and lived in all of those countries, plus Iceland, and for a shorter period in both France, and Turkey. Long ago in the land of Stony Brook, one man's quest to find out what makes a good story began. For 8 semesters he studied why the pen is mightier than the sword. Between classes and trying to unwind from the day's deep discussions of literature, video games provided a sweet escape from the mentally taxing work and a reminder that people can still have fun writing. James has been playing games since he was three. Sometimes the two would even blend and like a rouge pick-pocketing a noble, breath of the wild was completed while complaining about The Scarlet letter. For social gatherings, trading card games and Dungeons and Dragons were the best option. School gave him the knowledge of analytic writing to argue any point, D&D allowed him to have fun writing about fantasy and science fiction. The love of fantasy comes from a mentor, a step father who hoards comics and books. The classics were covered at school and Iron Man was taken care of at home. Before his time at the Brook, he had won an award for writing in high school which, kick started his studies, and bought a few new cards too. Writing about games is a passion that has guided many a paper and hopefully, will have his name go down in history. A passion for teaching will allow him to share not only his love and content knowledge on various topics, but convey the power of words to help make the world a better place.

In June 2010, I graduated from the Gallatin School of Individualized Study and NYU where I studied Jazz Guitar Performance and Creative Writing. Shortly after graduating, I began working as an ophthalmic technician at a private ophthalmology practice in Brooklyn and decided I wanted to pursue medicine.I completed a post-baccalaureate program at CUNY Hunter College from Fall 2011 to Spring 2013. During this time, I completed two levels of courses in biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry and physics as well as one semester of calculus. I became involved in Hunter's Physical Sciences Center, where I went on to tutor students in chemistry, organic chemistry and physics. I also took on several private students in organic chemistry.In the Fall of 2014, I matriculated at Stony Brook University School of Medicine in Long Island, where I will soon begin my second year.When tutoring, I focus on laying down a strong foundation of understanding before delving into the nuances of different subjects. Students too often fall into a cycle of keeping up with material as a series of pieces of information, never understanding the core concepts and attempting to memorize individual facts. With science and math, it is important to dedicate a lot of time when beginning a subject to clearly understand these core concepts. I have found that successfully approaching these subjects in a bottom-up way can mean the difference between continuously struggling frustratingly through courses like organic chemistry and learning to love them.Completing my first year of medical school has given me a new appreciation for the role that science plays outside of the classroom. I was born and raised in NYC but recently moved to Georgia. I am currently a Social worker licensed as a LMSW. I have a master's degree in social work from Stony Brook University and a bachelor's degree in Psychology from Plattsburgh State. My current career background is in providing psychotherapy and working with teens/adults with severe and persistent mental illness. I am a rising junior at Stony Brook University (SBU), double majoring in English and Psychology with a minor in Women and Gender Studies. I am a rising senior at Stony Brook University and I have just taken my Dental Admissions Test (DAT). Working with students and meeting their needs has been a major part of my life outside of school. I worked at a local tutorial while I attended Brooklyn Technical High School after taking the Specialized High School Exam (SHSAT). I taught the math portion of the SHSAT examination for multiple years and it was a rewarding experience for me as I saw many of my students get into their high school of choice. I am a recent graduate of Stony Brook University (SUNY) from where I received my Bachelor of Sciences in Applied Mathematics & Statistics with a concentration in Physical Sciences. When I was younger I did karate for about 6.5 years and got my black belt. Finally, during the winter I take pleasure in crocheting. I make hats, blankets, stuffed animals, and anything else I can come up with.

I got my bachelors at Washington University in St. Louis, double majoring in Environmental Earth Science and Germanic Language and Literature, and minoring in Writing. Currently I'm working towards my PhD in Marine Science at Stony Brook University (NY), doing research in the field of marine biogeochemistry. That's a bit of a mouthful, but basically it means I study the way living things interact with the chemistry of the ocean, and how that interaction gets recorded in mud and rock. Based on this expertise, I enjoy tutoring in general science, chemistry, and earth science.I also have a solid foundation in the language arts, having worked for three years as a Writing Mentor at Washington University in St. Louis. During this time, I was trained to help students with writing projects at any stage of the writing process, from brainstorming to line-editing. When I studied abroad in Germany for a year, I worked as a tutor for German students with English writing projects. This was a wonderful experience that allowed me to develop a deeper understanding of English academic writing by approaching it from a non-native perspective, while simultaneously improving my fluency in German, which I have studied for ten years. I earned my bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, then worked in the computer database software industry as a pre-sales engineer, consultant, trainer, and quality assurance engineer. Consulting in several industries gave me broad exposure to real-world problems and a work ethic that may serve as a role model. I learned to listen to problems and come up with creative and practical solutions. As a trainer and pre-sales engineer, I co-wrote a tutorial, created class materials, and made many technical presentations about "leading edge" software, and so became skilled at explaining complex concepts. My work in QA reinforced my obsession with quality and gave me a good eye for seeing and diagnosing errors, which applies to student errors and misunderstandings.I have tutored on and off since my college days, in math, science and ESL. I approach tutoring with a positive attitude, a good ear for listening, patience, respect, and humor. I have a bias toward deep understanding rather than rote memorization.

As a current junior in college, I personally know what the journey through elementary, middle, and high school looks like. Often, as students go through these years of their lives, they are dealing with a host of school-related challenges not only limited to academics, but also to peer-related obstacles and personal, emotional, and identity issues. As a tutor for young students such as these, I am responsible for helping them focus on their academic goals while also guiding them to question and view critically these challenges with which they are faced. I firmly believe that my role as an English and writing tutor goes beyond simply introducing effective strategies and techniques for scoring well on a test; my primary aim is to get students thinking critically by asking them questions and allowing them to expand their perspectives on a wide range of real world topics. Over the course of this somewhat gradual process, it is my hope that they will be able to view writing and the English language as a beautiful and complex expression of thought -- more than as just a bland, required essay that has them thinking in binaries.As an avid reader and writer myself, I feel I am qualified to assist students from the basics of English language structure to the intricacies of crafting a well-written essay or paper. Throughout my high school and college career, I have helped many of my peers with their writing assignments by proofreading their work, suggesting changes for improvement in content and style, and having conversations with them to better understand what message they are attempting to convey. Doing so in a relatively informal setting has enabled me to see each of my students not as just another face in the crowd, but instead, as someone with whom I connect and personally want to help improve.Further, my experience as an English major and Creative Writing minor at Stony Brook University has attuned me to the most important aspects of reading and writing in my everyday life, whether I am reading a novel for class or for pleasure, drafting a lengthy paper, or scrawling out a poem on a piece of scrap paper. Making reading and writing a personal passion and a primary part of my life allows me to recognize the beauty in teaching it to others, which I believe, in turn, will help students recognize the beauty in learning it as well.

Writing Is My Passion Love of language motivates me. Sharing that love is what I do. At 9, I discovered the joy of writing my inner thoughts on paper. I attribute my aha moment to my fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Whitehill, who recognized something in me that I hadn't figured a way to express, yet. She had read My Brother Sam is Dead, by James Lincoln and Christopher Collier aloud, and asked us to write a reaction to the novel. Something in me ignited that day. As a teacher, I honor my inner voice by helping students of all ages find themselves through language. I've done just about any job you could imagine from waitressing to investigating credit card fraud. Mostly, I've written and have been fortunate to earn money from my writing. Throughout 30 years I've written: journalism pieces, essays, business proposals, speeches, public relations materials as well as short stories, poems, lyrics, and fiction. I bring a wealth of real-world experience to the classroom, emphasizing the origin of creation, using many sources of knowledge. Everyone has a story to tell from rapper or spray paint artist to parent or child. Each person has a unique voice to share with the world. I help students write better using their own voice. I value the dynamic student-teacher relationship as a fundamental basis of learning and am a student-focused teacher. My classroom, or (one-on-one session) is conducted with integrity and respect for learning and focused on studying written language. As a tutor, I approach the lesson by simultaneously assessing his/her need and ability. Then step-by-step we work on the project at hand. I'm very efficient with my use of time. I strive to help my students thrive and grow to cultivate a lifelong love of language.

I have struggled through different levels of education and have ultimately come through with success. I understand the frustration being unable to grasp concept, not understanding a lecture and feeling lost afterword. I would never want students to feel the same level of frustration.

I am a recent graduate of Stony Brook University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Math and Statistics. Currently, I am studying for the FM and P exams in Actuarial Sciences. Mathematics has always been my strongest and most favorite subject. I was on the Math team for several years and participated in various regional Math competitions. I also have years of experience tutoring in formal and informal settings in a myriad of math subjects ranging from Algebra to Calculus IV.It is my passion to show students the beauty in math and disprove the many misconceptions of it being difficult and nonsensical, which I often find stems from poor communication between students and their teachers. As a tutor, I aim to rectify that problem with one-on-one sessions designed to tackle concepts from a different angle, that perhaps the teacher had overlooked. There is no better feeling to me than that moment of clarity when a student finally understands something they had been previously struggling with.Aside from math and studying, I also play guitar and write music in my spare time. Although many people probably would never think so, math and music are actually codependent, and one could not exist without the other. As a 4th year undergraduate student at Stony Brook University, I understand how difficult school can be. I have gone through my share of trail and error in how to study. I also understand that not every method of studying works for everyone and some subjects require different methods of studying. But in all cases, perseverance is necessary to succeed. I have been a teacher's assistant for general and organic chemistry. I have also tutored for molecular biology and basic statistics.
