I am Lindsay. I am an avid lover of language, literature, writing, learning, artistic endeavors, athleticism, nutrition, and enhancement of the mind through those pursuits. That being said, I’d like to share my passion and enthusiasm for learning with you.I have been a teacher for 6 years. My teaching experiences are as follows:- middle school children English in the United States as a classroom assistant- middle school children English in Mexico as a lead teacher- American and international university age students Spanish as a part time instructor- high school age students Spanish as a high school teacher- international adults English at a non-profit center in Syracuse, as a student-teacher- kids yoga classes as the lead teacher- adult hatha yoga classes, asana, pranayama, meditation as the lead teacher- high school girls volleyball, basketball and track coachMy idea when I am teaching is that I am a facilitator. That means that you know how to do everything, you just don’t know that you know. My job is to show you that you have everything you need to do it yourself. Therefore, I ask questions to guide you, and in time you will see that you do indeed possess the necessary mental forces to complete the tasks before you of your own accord! When dealing with language, I use the communicative language approach, and focus on instilling a student-centered learning environment. I both create and ask the student to take part in creating course materials and shaping course content to foster interest in both learning and participating in their personal learning progress. I attempt to create an environment where a student feels no fear to ask questions, and is able to verbalize and communicate, and also is able to travel outside the classroom and use what we’ve learned in authentic contexts. I closely monitor student progress, and also am more than open to emailing and meeting at the student’s convenience. As far as my personality goes, I am a very caring, silly, open-minded individual. I genuinely am concerned for the welfare of those around me, which is why I am a yoga instructor. I also love academic pursuits, which is why I hope to be a tutor for who ever needs assistance.

Since 1992, it has been my pleasure to cultivate the minds of Americas youth. As an Alum of Teach for America, I am committed wholeheartedly to shrink the achievement gap to a minuscule number. Most of the youngsters who become behavioral challenges in our classrooms are those who have acute literacy deficiencies. Before his untimely death, I supported celebrity national literacy spokesman Issac Hayes efforts to make America 100% literate. Over the years I have worked in urban public schools with pupils who were underachievers drawn by the lures of the streets. These youths in particular led me to complete a masters degree in Business Administration. For a number of years I have been an entrepreneur, so I know firsthand what it takes to succeed in the marketplace. To that end I have developed career awareness and entrepreneurship programs for my pupils. The key to a thriving financial sector which supports our schools and neighborhoods is the cadre of educators we identify to shape future leaders. Mentoring leaders and teaching business education through my company www.ItzBiz.biz, I am confident that I would be able to translate those skills to helping Varsity accomplish their goal of being the premiere tutoring platform in the industry. Having taught students in California, New York, and Atlanta, I have a coast to coast prospective of what it takes to help youths excel. The opportunity to use my plethora of skills with Varsity Tutors is welcomed.

I obtained my Master's of Science in Microelectronics Photonics from the University of Arkansas and my Bachelor's of Science in Chemical Engineering from Syracuse University. During my Master's studies, I worked as a chemistry teaching assistant and discovered my passion for STEM education. I continued to work with students after my teaching requirement ended by becoming a chemistry tutor and research mentor. I am currently pursuing my Doctorate in Materials Science and Engineering, where I balance my desire to modernize water treatment systems with my love of inspiring students to pursue careers in STEM. My tutoring style emphasizes the learning process as much as the technical content to form a foundation for lifelong learning and problem solving. Together, we will logically break down complex problems into smaller, more manageable pieces. I specialize in introductory university-level Chemistry and Math courses, including AP Chemistry and Calculus. When I'm not tutoring, you will find me cooking a new recipe, hiking in the Ozark Mountains, or cheering loudly for my favorite basketball teams.

I teach because students afford me hope for the future of society. As an educator, I have taught and tutored in diverse environments for over three years. My teaching philosophy strives to help students accomplish their goals, but not just the immediate, easily quantifiable goals, like earning a certain grade on a paper. Rather, in accomplishing these immediate goals, I also aim to help students better themselves as people, to think about the world differently, so that, regardless of what they might face in their future, they will be in a position to succeed. At Syracuse University, I majored in philosophy and English and graduated summa cum laude. I was president of an organization that taught weekly spoken word poetry workshops, which improved students writing and public speaking abilities, and I also tutored ESL students at a high school. Pedagogically, I incorporate my experiences as a student into my teaching curriculum, ensuring my students know why they are doing a certain task rather than merely what they are doing. You are not only finding an experienced tutor who loves his work, but also one accomplished in his subjects. I am a fiction writer who has been published in national magazines. As a student, the dean of my college selected me to give the senior address at convocation. Moreover, I received a scholarship at Syracuse University awarded for my performance in the humanities. These achievements separate me from just any tutor you might find.

This comes after graduating from North Hunterdon High School with a 3.8 GPA and a 2140 composite SAT score. My best subject on the SAT was math, although I also scored highly on both the reading comprehension and writing sections. I also took the LSAT this year, scoring a 168 (96th percentile), which I actually found frustrating because it was lower than every single one of my practice tests (with my personal best being a 174). Because of this, I learned from my mistakes and am able to tutor both the subject matter of the LSAT as well as how to prepare for the test. I will be attending Vanderbilt Law School on a majority scholarship in the Fall. I have plenty of experience both in school and teaching friends and classmates material, as I tutored in college as well. Hi there!I recently graduated from Syracuse University with a dual degree in English and communications. I adore the written word and spreading that love of it to young students. In college, I worked as both a Resident Advisor and a tutor to undergraduate and graduate students. Both opportunities gave me the chance to work with, mentor, and educate peers on curricular and co-curricular studies. Sharing my love of reading and writing is a great thrill of mine and I feel honored to get such an opportunity to do so.In terms of academia, my dual degree lent me the chance to hone my communications skills (I now work full time at a television production company focusing on documentary-style TV) as well as my skills in English. As a result, I became well-educated in both classic literature as well as contemporary literary theory focusing on a variety of topics such as gender, media, class and social structure, and an assortment of other theories and topics (all of which I'd love to chat about if given the opportunity). In my downtime, I love exploring and trying new things (mainly food) and I'm an avid animal lover. Here's some additional trivia about me:I was originally born in Texas (Air Force family)Trying new restaurants is one of my favorite activitiesFavorite movie: The Right Stuff (that Air Force family clearly had an impact on me...)Favorite book(s): Nothing compares to the Harry Potter series, in my humble opinionFavorite animal: My two golden retrievers, Logan and Skylar (though my cats make a decent bid for this vote)Favorite TV show: Mad Men (nope, my company doesn't make it - but I'm genuinely hooked on this series)I warmly encourage you to contact me! I look forward to meeting you.-Erin

1+ Years Tutoring

I recently graduated from Columbia University where I excelled in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Organic Chemistry. For over a year, I have tutored college and high school students in these subjects. I learned that every student learns differently, so I try to utilize creativity in my teaching approaches. My goal is to steer each student to that “ah-ha” moment so that they truly understand the material.I am currently in the process of applying to medical school, which I plan to start in August 2015. In addition, I like to bike, play the drums, ski, and watch football for fun.

My tutoring approach is based on the following principles: Bloom's Taxonomy: I believe this is the best model for helping learners transition from a subject's basic concepts to subject mastery Accessibility: All learners deserve the same access to knowledge. Learning should not be limited by time, specialized needs, or learning and expression preferences. The Whole Learner: Each learner's interests, ambitions, and personality are not separate from learning but an essential part of it.
