Having been raised in Europe, some of my earliest childhood memories are of yearly family vacations in France. Later, throughout my school years, I participated in an exchange program, where I lived with a French family and went to school in Rennes, Bretagne.The French language has always held a special delight for me. I completed my university studies in French literature and philosophy. While attending Trinity College I gave private tuition to students.I have worked in Paris and Canada in bilingual capacites for example, with an international school where I managed private and group classes for individuals of all backgrounds and ages. I teach in a way that is fun and encouraging, while giving students a greater appreciation of the richness of Francophone culture. Since graduating from Trinity College in 2005, I have lived and worked abroad (in India, New Zealand, and Europe) and spent the past six years teaching 4th, 5th, and 6th grades at both traditional and progressive middle and elementary schools here in Massachusetts. It is so easy to give up when faced with a challenge, to fade quietly into the background when we aren't confident, and to put up a wall of disinterest or dislike when we feel frustrated. Unfortunately, the traditional "school model" can be all too conducive to this, making it difficult for many children to love school and learning. My experience working at a small, progressive, student-centered independent school has taught me something very simple but profound: Education is not merely the acquisition of information and facts. Facts are available in seconds at the click of a button. Rather, education is about learning how to really think. Being "smart" no longer means being able to rattle off the capitals of all 50 states by memory- anyone can find that information on the internet. It is about knowing how to read critically, organize and synthesize ideas, reflect, and write analytically.Writing can be a daunting task for children, but there are so many tools that can be employed to make it not only manageable, but even enjoyable. Whether you're a visual thinker and you benefit from graphic organizers to outline your ideas, or a mathematical thinker and you need a formulaic approach to constructing a perfect paragraph or essay, there are a multitude of strategies that good writers have figured out and everyone can use to their advantage.Does your child say he or she just doesn't like to read? Perhaps they haven't found the right books, the genre that excites them or the author that "speaks" to them. Perhaps they're reading books that are too hard and getting lost in the language, or too easy and losing interest. Or, they haven't yet figured out how to get enveloped in a story, become attached to a character, and visualize a setting. There are many reasons why reading can be a struggle, but like writing, one size doesn't fit all and it's just a matter of figuring out which strategies work.The best way to really understand what your child needs is through undivided, individualized attention, and a strong, positive relationship in which they feel safe to take academic risks and ask questions. In most classrooms, the attention of the teacher is limited and goes to students who know all of the answers (because their hands are confidently raised and they are engaged in discussions) and the children who seek negative attention because they are calling out or disrupting their classmates. The one-to-one nature of tutoring affords an incredible opportunity to give your child the attention, support, and consistency they need to succeed. More importantly, it creates an environment in which learning is fun, rewarding, exciting, and satisfying, ultimately fostering the intrinsic motivation that is the key to success.

Writing is never work. Even if it's an essay, an exam, a homework assignment--anything that should elicit stress--a certain joy exists within it. Maybe that solidifies why I chose to major in creative writing, with my future aspiration to become an author or editor. Currently, I'm a freshman at Trinity College in Hartford, CT, where I'm also studying rhetoric, sociology, anthropology, and theatre. Both in college and in high school, I've been extremely active in whatever English-related programs I could find, from book clubs to poetry contests. I even had a poem submitted in the Apple Pi Literary Magazine! With Varsity Tutors, I hope to spread my passion for writing and literature to curious, hard-working students.Some of my work experience has been less-than-conventional. I also work at Party Princess Productions in Boston, where I've been smothered in face paint and sung every "Frozen" song in existence. Though it's not very common to say that my job involves navigating through hoop-skirts and character shoes, the party princess world has taught me how to communicate with, listen to, educate, and learn from children. Working as a summer camp counselor at the New England School of Performing Arts, as well as a as a hayride guide at Smolak Farms, has also contributed to my experience working with kids.Naturally, reading and writing are among my interests. (J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series and Oscar Wilde's "The Picture of Dorian Gray" are my favorites!). I've also been involved with acting throughout my life and am a member of Trinity College's Improv group. Overall, I'd consider myself to be an optimistic and creative person. Both positivity and creativity are crucial to early learning, and I try to incorporate them into my tutoring.

I am a professor of philosophy with over ten years teaching experience both in the U.S. and internationally. Currently I teach at a large university in Turkey. Prior to this I taught at a college in Slovakia as well as at a university in Chicago, IL, USA.I earned my Ph.D. in Philosophy at DePaul University in Chicago, my M.A. at The New School in New York City, and my B.A. with a double major in English and Philosophy at Trinity College in Hartford, CT.I am passionate about teaching and discussing philosophy and literature. Recently I've graduated from the CUNY Graduate Center in Manhattan with a Master's in Liberal Arts. I wrote my thesis on the rise of vigilante heroes in Marvel Comics during the early 1980s and how these reflected the same time period in New York City. I have lived in New York for the past two and a half years in Manhattan, Brooklyn and now Ridgewood, Queens. In 2012 I graduated Trinity College in Hartford, CT with a degree in Sociology. During my undergraduate years at Trinity, I had the opportunity to travel and study in Cape Town, South Africa. During that time I volunteered in both prisons and townships working with students on reading and language skills as well as arts and crafts. I also had the chance to meet with several street artists who gave me a tour and discussed the street art history in Cape Town. These experiences have helped me in promoting learning as a way to strengthen one's life and gain opportunities that may have seemed impossible before. I love reading, art especially illustration, mural and street art as well as comics and graphic novels. I love different types of music from Hip Hop to Rock, Jazz, and Reggae and try to see different bands in my spare time.
