As both as an educator and a writer, I've discovered that so much of life involves communication; not only bringing thoughts and feelings "to the surface," but learning how best to articulate and express them, both in written form and verbally. I love to see students gain confidence as they master concepts, integrate ideas, discover truths about themselves and become emotionally invested in the learning process. After all, learning is a blast: it's a lot of fun to learn! To that end, I have taught students from age 5 to 98, in a wide variety of settings and under quite a range of circumstances for more than forty years. Aside from teaching English Composition and ESL at four California community colleges, in Japan for a year, and briefly at The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), I taught poetry reading in over fifty schools to students in three states (K-12) for 25 years through California Poets in the Schools. For over three years, I worked as a High School substitute, subbing in English, History, Biology, Foreign Language and PE classes. When opportunities to teach Screenplay, Fiction and Poetry Writing in California prisons, juvenile detention facilities and a State Hospital arose, I immediately took them up! Such challenges were wonderfully gratifying and provided me with plenty of opportunities to hone my teaching skills. With regards to my education, as an undergraduate in search of a Creative Writing degree, I attended The University of Oregon, The University of California, Santa Barbara and The University of California, Santa Cruz. As a graduate student, I attended The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) for my ESL studies and The University of Southern California (USC) for my graduate school work in Creative Writing. I attained a Bachelor's Degree in Creative Writing and Art (Aesthetic Studies) from UC Santa Cruz. I attained my ESL certification and three other forms of licensure from UCLA and my master's degree in Professional Writing (Fiction and Poetry) from The University of Southern California (USC). Over the last twenty years I have tutored English Composition, English grammar and all levels of ESL, primarily reading, writing and conversation. In terms of special subjects, I tutor Poetry Writing, Fiction Writing and Screenplay. I also have a great deal of experience editing other people's work. The easy answer to my favorite subject is whatever I'm tutoring or teaching at the present time. I love teaching all of the earlier subjects I mentioned, though ESL probably provides the most immediate gratification. Mastering a new language, though difficult, is so rewarding and, at times, thrilling. English is quite challenging for non-native speakers and it always feels like a real privilege to try and guide such students through. In terms of my teaching philosophy and tutoring style, I very much believe in what used to be called the affective domain encouraging students to invest themselves emotionally in subjects that interest them and helping emotionally engage students in subjects that they must "master," but resist. My approach is sort of soft-sell Socratic, in that I pose lots of questions to my students. This helps them learn through the use of critical thinking, reasoning and logic, though we seldom venture into the terminology!

I'm a Los Angeles native new to Brooklyn! I received my BA in Modern Literature from the University of California, Santa Cruz and my MS in Counseling Psychology from California State University, Long Beach. Despite the humanities degrees, I've always been a math and science nerd. My favorite science course was Stars and Stellar Evolution taught by professor Stanford Woosley, one of the preeminent experts on supernovae. My favorite math course was Discrete Mathematics taught by professor Jordan Ellenberg. Professor Ellenberg just published a great book that covers many of the topics from that class called "How Not to Be Wrong: The Power of Mathematical Thinking"!Back in Los Angeles, I worked as a tutor and coached a high school wrestling team. As a tutor, I spent a lot of time working with high school students working on Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Statistics, PreCalc, Chemistry, Psychology, and English. I really like working with teenagers because they like to have fun, but they also know how to tackle serious academic subjects.Outside of academia, I train, teach, and compete in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I love the technical aspects of the sport. I cross train in judo and wrestling. Between these sports, I have over a decade of martial arts experience. I've been a lot of cool places and met a lot of cool people in my travels to train and compete!

I graduated from the University of California in Santa Cruz, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics. During my time at university, I focused on French, German, foreign language education, and applied linguistics; I also had the privilege of completing a year abroad at the Humboldt University of Berlin, where I studied linguistics in German! After graduating, I worked for three years as a tutor, academic coach, and operations manager of a tutoring company in Berkeley, California. There, I tutored students of all ages in reading, writing, French, German, test preparation, and executive functioning. From there, I moved to Austria for a year under Fulbright Austria as an English language teaching assistant; I worked in two Austrian high schools, learning from a number of skilled local teachers, and developing and teaching my own English lessons. As a tutor, I am a strong believer that no two students are alike, so I adapt my teaching style to each student to help them learn using their strengths while developing the areas they need to improve. Additionally, I like to take a holistic view of a students academic needs to help them move beyond their challenges with a particular subject. In my free time, I love reading, listening to podcasts, learning languages, going to concerts, film photography, exploring my neighborhood, and cooking.

Hello,I'm a recent graduate of the California Institute of Technology in Economics and Computer Science. I was also accepted at Harvard, Princeton, MIT, and Stanford. I have a broad range of interests spanning science, math, engineering, social science, the humanities, the arts, and athletics (I also played on the Caltech basketball team). My background allows me to tutor general college prep, especially the SAT, ACT and the GRE. I love to teach analytical thinking, ranging from advanced Math and Physics to strategies for understanding literature and developing arguments.I've tutored & received tutoring my entire life. My dad started drilling me on multiplication tables at 4 and 2 years later, when my oldest sister came of age, I began working with her. 3 siblings came after her who I worked with every day to improve their mathematical & verbal reasoning, giving them assignments out of workbooks our parents got us, correcting & reviewing their answers. I still help my youngest sibling with her Calculus homework today. My first compensated tutoring gig came the summer before my junior year when I taught local high school & community college students chemistry & physics from my home. Since then I've worked constantly as a tutor, working with a company in various locations throughout the Southland. I specialize in SAT math, having led workshops & boot camps which saw some students improve their score 200 points. In college, I sharpened my tutoring skills against the world's best whetstones. I do not just mean Caltech professors, though they deserve their props. The Institute fosters a collaborative environment where students thrive through teaching and learning from others. You really cannot get by in the school without these skills. Thus, my educational experience has exposed me to many of the effective ways people learn and teach. When I tutor people, no matter what the subject, I keep my utmost focus on patience and encouragement. Even if I find the subject easy, I can harken back to long nights trying to understand complex topics at Caltech which my tutors found easy, and gain inspiration from their patience and encouragement. These experiences fostered in me a love of learning and passing my knowledge onto others.I hope you feel inclined to take advantage of my willingness, no, intense desire to work with you. I plan to remain local indefinitely as I pursue other ongoing ventures.Thank you,Brian

I recently received a PhD in the History of Consciousness program at the University of California Santa Cruz. This renowned interdisciplinary program is concentrated in the humanities while corresponding with other disciplines such as social science, physical science, and the arts. My academic work culminates in a dissertation in which I explore the effects of historical circumstances on cultural production and the ways that the surface features reflected in books, cinema, and art, illuminate the historical process itself. I have taught a variety of undergraduate classes including history, literature and film studies. I have also designed and taught upper division undergraduate seminars and Creative Writing as an instructor of record. My teaching ethos is to guide students toward a comprehensive understanding of the subject through discussion, close readings of texts, and the development of students' writing. My focus on writing, both analytical and creative, is grounded in the recognition that it is through the writing process itself that one comes to a clearer and more integrated understanding of the world. One of the most rewarding experiences as an instructor is to see a student's writing improve and create a pathway toward a proficient and nuanced understanding of a subject. The diversity of undergraduate students I have taught has been inspirational in providing me with a range of skills to better recognize a student's specific aptitudes and thereby develop and amplify their work in both an academic setting and in life in general. I have also traveled extensively which has allowed me to further hone my ability to communicate in various cultural contexts with people who have life experiences different from my own.

I taught English and creative writing for several years during my graduate work at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, including first-year English writing courses. I am passionate about helping students of all ages improve their writing skills. I love leading students through the writing process to produce great papers and college application essays, as well as study for AP and SAT exams. I can also help with personal statements for graduate school applications, including the creative writing MFA.Awards and Fellowships at UW-Madison:Campus-wide Teaching Assistant award for Innovation in Teaching, an award given to 15 grad students out of 2200 TAsUniversity Housing teaching award, a student-nominated honorDavid Maraniss Fellow at the School of Journalism and Mass CommunicationHoffman-Halls Emerging Artist Fellow at the Wisconsin Institute for Creative WritingIn addition to my experience in academia, MFA in creative writing, and MA in journalism, I have over a decade of experience as a magazine writer and editor. Tutoring mirrors publishing, in that they're both collaborative efforts to train stronger writers to write refined prose. Great progress can be made this way.I teach writing as a process by encouraging students to embrace drafting. We take time to understand the project, brainstorm, follow idea threads, and write first drafts. Then the feedback and revision process begins, which leads to a final, polished piece. I can help at any point on this timeline.I'm excited to help both high school and college students with academic work and test prep, and I can also give you feedback one-on-one with your fiction or poetry project. Please contact me to learn more and schedule lessons."[Emily] is always positive and always has wonderful constructive criticism for my essays. She makes me feel as though she takes time to learn my writing style and genuinely cares about my success in the class. We are on this earth to learn, and to use what we learn to serve others. If you're not doing these two things, you're not living the full, rich life you deserve.I got my undergraduate degree from U.C. Santa Cruz. A few years later I was in Rome, Italy with a Cambridge RSA certificate, teaching English as a Foreign language.I've had a lot of other odd jobs that involved writing and teaching. Eventually I got a teaching credential in science: biology because this was the subject closest to my B.A.I tutor all the natural sciences, as well as English/ESL. My favorite subjects to tutor will always be Italian, science, and writing. Italian is close to my heart because of the years I lived in Italy. But science is the most fun to tutor, because you will usually get to build things, or at least draw some cool diagrams.I also love to teach writing because it's so much fun to see the look on a student's face when he or she realizes how easy it is. I had an amazing English teacher in high school who taught me a few simple formulas for writing. His shortcuts got me through an A.P. History exam, and they helped me all the way through college. I can teach them to you in an hour.If you master a few rules and get enough practice, you can become a strong writer. How you learn is a very personal process. Everyone is unique, and everyone has a unique way of learning. One of the reasons I left my teaching position was frustration over the "one-size-fits-all" style that's forced on us in school. If you're seeking a tutor, you probably prefer not to learn through the single "listen and read" technique that is the basis of most of our educational system. I want to help you learn in your own way.Outside of academia, I'm interested in biking, travel, the environment, and entrepreneurship. I've volunteered for the state parks, Tree People, and similar organizations. Over the course of my life, I've probably traveled more miles on a bike than I've driven.I once followed the route of an ancient Roman road, the Appian Way, across half of Italy on a bike. It took me almost 2 weeks and I'm writing a book about it.I've also started a few home businesses, and lately I've been reading a lot of books on sales and marketing. At the moment I'm helping a real estate agent with his marketing, but some day I would like to run a bike touring company in Italy.
