My tutoring career started while I was still attending Western Illinois University in pursuit of my bachelor's degree in physics. I would tutor in the physics tutoring center in the main sciences building. Students would come in without appointments, and we would accept any and all students who needed help. I was there for two years, my junior and senior year before I left after receiving my degree. During my school years, I would also assist in the physics and chemistry demonstration shows that we put on every year. Students from the local middle school and high school would attend, and fellow students and I would perform a variety of educational demonstrations. As you might guess, the subjects I feel most confident in tutoring would be physics and math. However, I don't believe that to be the limit of my scope. I've always had an interest in the other sciences, things like biology and chemistry, and I've had ten years of piano lessons so basic music theory and education are within my range as well. When I'm not tutoring, I like to play video games online with my friends, a few songs on the piano, and even meet up to play the occasional table top game like Dungeons and Dragons. I study chess rigorously, and hope to one day be a chess tutor as well. Picking the right tutor is important, but can be a tad tricky. A tutor is best served as both an educational guide and a friend. Because of the one on one nature, it's important that the tutor is someone you can look up to and trust as well as feel connected with. To me, a tutor's job is not to make the student jump through more and more hoops in the interest of perfection. Rather, they are there to foster curiosity, a willingness to learn from mistakes, and improve a student's level of confidence in a subject matter. A true master is an eternal student.

My passion for helping students stems from a desire to see others succeed, particularly in overcoming the challenges of complex subjects like physics and mathematics. Throughout my academic journey and professional career, I have seen firsthand how education can transform lives and empower individuals to reach their full potential. I have extensive experience working with students in various capacities, starting with my time as a Life Skills Trainer, where I supported individuals in achieving greater independence through the development of practical skills. This role sharpened my ability to communicate effectively and adapt to the unique needs of each learner. As a Research Assistant in Physics, I guided peers in understanding experimental techniques and data analysis, while also presenting research findings at conferences, which deepened my engagement with academic mentoring. I earned dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Physics Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, with a specialization in Energy, from Western Illinois University and Southern Illinois University. This background has equipped me with a solid foundation in STEM subjects, allowing me to tutor students in physics, mathematics, and mechanical engineering. Of these, physics and math is my favorite subjects to tutor because it offers a fascinating combination of theory and real-world application, encouraging critical thinking and problem-solving. My teaching philosophy is centered around fostering a collaborative learning environment where students feel encouraged to ask questions and actively engage with the material. I believe in breaking down complex concepts into manageable parts, guiding students to develop a deeper understanding rather than just memorizing facts. My tutoring style is patient, supportive, and adaptable, ensuring that each student can learn at their own pace and according to their individual needs. Outside of academia, I enjoy working on hands-on projects, particularly those that involve engineering solutions. I also participate in environmental initiatives, such as planting trees on campus, and contribute to community events, which keep me grounded and connected to others. These interests complement my academic pursuits, reinforcing my commitment to helping students not only in the classroom but in broader life skills and community engagement.

Whether you need help with general education requirements, major-specific coursework, or test preparation, alumni tutors can draw on their own experience completing these same classes. Their familiarity with WIU's academic rigor and teaching styles makes them particularly effective for upper-level and major coursework.

During your first session, a tutor will learn about your specific academic goals, current challenges, and learning style. They'll assess your understanding of the material and work with you to create a personalized plan tailored to your needs. Since WIU alumni tutors understand the university's academic landscape, they can quickly identify which strategies worked best for similar coursework and adapt them for you.
