My passion for Spanish started after I graduated high school. I began volunteering abroad working in non-profit preschools in impoverished areas in both Argentina and Mexico. I also took intense Spanish immersion classes in order to improve my Spanish to best communicate with the communities I worked with. In June I will graduate with degrees in Spanish and Psychology from Western Washington University. My goal is to instill the same passion for learning and speaking Spanish in my students!

I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biochemistry from Western Washington University with a focus on material science. The subsequent year I graduated from the University of California Riverside with a master's degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. I have been tutoring for over four years, working with a wide variety of students. During my undergraduate studies I tutored gifted high school students looking to excel in AP and IB classes as well as on the SAT to prepare them for a strong college career. I also spent considerable time with college students in my field and similar programs. Students have always given positive reviews when I ask them about the experience, commenting that the time was enjoyable and that learning came naturally. In my opinion, this is the best way to truly learn something. Outside of the classroom, I have a large set of hobbies and interests. I enjoy basketball, tennis, road biking, mountain biking, skiing, running, chess, working on my car, watching football, and going to the gym.

I tutor because I know what it’s like to struggle in school. I’ll never forget the day my high school counselor told me I might never go to college. Her words stung, but the inspiration the words gave me is irreplaceable. She drove me to succeed. My new found motivation propelled me from a C student to the top ten percent of my graduating high school class. From there I began my degree in Biochemistry at Western Washington University, which I will receive in June 2015.I tutor chemistry, physics, biology and math. I also provide test prep for the SAT and MCAT. I have worked at my university’s tutoring center for over a year. This taught me to teach quickly and effectively. I never had more than 15 minutes with a student, but my job depended on my ability to help them understand a concept, whether it was algebra or organic chemistry. I also worked with the Compass 2 Campus program, where I tutored and mentored middle school students from low-income schools.I always like to get to know the students I work with. I love hearing about their goals and interests. It allows me to tailor my style to each individual student, and make coursework relevant to them. I hold all my students to high standards, but I give everything I’ve got to make sure they achieve them.

It is my hope that we, together, can move you to a point of understanding in science. I am here to assist you in anyway I can. We are a team. Learning science and math is thought, in some circles, to be fun. I, rather find science and math to be awe-inspiring and "cool" stuff that allows me to see and appreciate the world around me. We can learn to appreciate the world around us together. I have taught high school 9th grade Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Algebra II and other College-in-High School classes (for college credit). At the college level, I have taught general chemistry, general Biology, majors Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry for Nurses, basic Nutrition, Nutrition for Nurses, and Environmental Science for over 30 years. I am now retired, and available to assist both high school and college students. For my college students, over the years all but one of my course offerings have filled with in 72 hours of being opened.

I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from Western Washington University in 2013, and then spent 18 months completing the doctoral course work at Boston College for synthetic chemistry. I've tutored general and organic chemistry privately at Western Washington university, and I've taught discussion sections of general and organic chemistry at Boston College. I'm currently pursuing a Masters in Teaching. My strength as a tutor is that I'm not so far removed from playing the role a student myself, and I remember the struggle of encountering tough material for the very first time. I like to keep that perspective in mind when I meet with students; my tutoring style is focused on building up from strong foundational principles, rather than drilling material into one ear so it can spill out the other. I'm striving to reach that "aha" moment, when the material becomes intuitive. I love to approach science problems from multiple angles with students, to increase comprehension and confidence in the material rapidly.I've been a part of two very strong organic chemistry research teams, for a total of about 3 years. I was fortunate to publish the research that I had accomplished while at Western Washington University. (More details about my research are available on my resume/curriculum vitae.)Outside of academia, my passions are: Lindy Hop (a kind of jazz dance), cooking meals with/for loved ones, reading (novels, short stories, poetry...), and a very wide variety of music.

I'm an online tutor who helps students build real, usable skills and teaching content across writing, reading/ELA, math, and science from elementary foundations to high school rigor, including adult learners preparing for the GED. I bring 10+ years of experience working in school settings and 2+ years of tutoring experience, which helps me meet students where they are while keeping progress measurable and consistent. I also support test prep for the ACT, SAT, and ISEE, focusing on strategies, pacing, and accuracy under time pressure. Beyond content, I coach executive functioning and study skills organization, planning, and follow-throughs, so students can actually stick to a process when it matters. With degrees in Neuroscience and Philosophy, I keep sessions structured, concept-driven, and practical: we build understanding, apply it immediately, so students can become independent.

I believe that learning should be engaging and relevant. One of my purposes as a tutor is to demonstrate to students the wealth of information that still awaits them and to share my excitement about these subjects in the hope that they will join me in that emotion. I hope to show them that both math and science are applicable and beneficial to their everyday lives, regardless of where their interests may eventually lead them.I also want to give my students methods for surviving and thriving in today's increasingly fast- paced and technologically advanced world. To do this, they need the critical thinking and analytical skills to discriminate and interpret the information with which they are bombarded everyday from a variety of sources. I want to show them that science is not a static body of knowledge to be memorized, but a growing and changing way of understanding our selves and our world. I try approach concepts by modeling how scientists collect data about a subject and then use it to develop theories that can explain their observations. I always emphasize that scientists continue to further develop and modify these theories as new data is discovered. I also want my students to understand that I do not have all of the answers for them and they will need to find some of them on their own. They need to be willing and capable enough to do this. When working with math, I attempt to connect concepts to "real world" uses and ideas. I hope to show my students that math is not a torture technique, but a tool that can be used to describe and test ideas as well as to overcome obstacles to success.Lastly, I believe that math and science are not done in isolation from other topics. Reading, writing and communication are important parts of instruction as well. Whether it is reading about a concept for information, learning or pleasure or it is writing and speaking about the ideas that a student has developed in working out a problem, all of these activities are integral parts of math and science work. However, my ultimate goal as a tutor is to have a positive influence on some part of each of my students' lives that helps them toward becoming capable and independent adults. The primary objective of teaching young people is to have them eventually be able to make competent and confident decisions for themselves and for others who may depend upon them as adults.
