I am a teacher certified in early childhood and elementary education. I'm a positive, energetic, and professional educator who is dedicated to promoting student engagement and success in all elementary and primary subjects. I have a passion for helping students learn and understand at their greatest potential, and helping students discover their own love of learning. I am LETRS trained, which has given me a deep knowledge of the Science of Reading strategies and phonics instruction. I've also used a wide variety of math curriculums and teaching methods, which has helped me develop a deep love for guiding and teaching math in ways that help students truly understand it. I have worked as a classroom teacher as well as doing one-on-one and small group tutoring in many capacities over the past seven years. I have decided to stop teaching full time in a classroom to take care of my first child, but I want to continue helping students learn and grow in a tutoring capacity. I have a lot of experience planning and teaching targeted, personalized lessons for K-2 students who struggle with math, reading, and/or writing. I am now retired, and available to assist both high school and college students. For my college students, over the years all but one of my course offerings have filled with in 72 hours of being opened.

I am a master's student at Western Washington University studying how nitrogen moves around an ecosystem. I did my undergraduate at Michigan Tech University where I studying Environmental Sciences and Math, which consequently are my two favorite subjects to tutor! While these two may seem very different, at their core, they're all about how things work. I've always found that if you peak behind the curtain at how something works, nothing is as scary or difficult as it may seem. Let's figure it out together!

It wasn't until I made it to college that I realized I wanted to be a scientist. As a high school student, I was exceptionally mediocre at school. Fortunately I was accepted to Western Washington University. It was my time at Western that I found what I was capable of. Chemistry, and mathematics are such daunting subjects, I never imagined I would be able to grasp them, after all academics were not my strong suit. Through hard work, endless study sessions, and a blossoming passion I was able to prevail and call myself a scientist. My dream is to one day become a professor of biochemistry; a pursuit near to my heart. Biochemical interpretations of the world around us fascinate me, and I would like to share my excitement for the subject with you.

My name is Jack. I have a master's degree in mathematics, and I worked as an NTT faculty member of the Mathematics Department at Western Washington University from December of 2019 to December of 2021. During my time as a graduate teaching assistant and a full-time instructor for the Mathematics Department at Western Washington University, I taught business algebra, business calculus, differential calculus, integral calculus, college algebra, precalculus and trigonometry. Prior to graduate school, I was a mathematics tutor for four years. I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biochemistry from Western Washington University with a focus on material science. The subsequent year I graduated from the University of California Riverside with a master's degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. I have been tutoring for over four years, working with a wide variety of students. During my undergraduate studies I tutored gifted high school students looking to excel in AP and IB classes as well as on the SAT to prepare them for a strong college career. I also spent considerable time with college students in my field and similar programs. In my opinion, this is the best way to truly learn something. Outside of the classroom, I have a large set of hobbies and interests. I believe that learning should be engaging and relevant. One of my purposes as a tutor is to demonstrate to students the wealth of information that still awaits them and to share my excitement about these subjects in the hope that they will join me in that emotion. I hope to show them that both math and science are applicable and beneficial to their everyday lives, regardless of where their interests may eventually lead them.I also want to give my students methods for surviving and thriving in today's increasingly fast- paced and technologically advanced world. To do this, they need the critical thinking and analytical skills to discriminate and interpret the information with which they are bombarded everyday from a variety of sources. I want to show them that science is not a static body of knowledge to be memorized, but a growing and changing way of understanding our selves and our world. I try approach concepts by modeling how scientists collect data about a subject and then use it to develop theories that can explain their observations. I always emphasize that scientists continue to further develop and modify these theories as new data is discovered. I also want my students to understand that I do not have all of the answers for them and they will need to find some of them on their own. They need to be willing and capable enough to do this. When working with math, I attempt to connect concepts to "real world" uses and ideas. I hope to show my students that math is not a torture technique, but a tool that can be used to describe and test ideas as well as to overcome obstacles to success.Lastly, I believe that math and science are not done in isolation from other topics. Reading, writing and communication are important parts of instruction as well. Whether it is reading about a concept for information, learning or pleasure or it is writing and speaking about the ideas that a student has developed in working out a problem, all of these activities are integral parts of math and science work.However, my ultimate goal as a tutor is to have a positive influence on some part of each of my students' lives that helps them toward becoming capable and independent adults. The primary objective of teaching young people is to have them eventually be able to make competent and confident decisions for themselves and for others who may depend upon them as adults.

I consider myself a lifelong student while also being a teacher. I have a passion for education and bring my creativity and enthusiasm to every class. I am a graduate of Western Washington University. I have earned both a BA in English Literature and most recently a Master's in Teaching, in which I was named the Outstanding Graduate from my cohort. I am currently enjoying living in my home state of New Mexico, where I have spent my teaching years as a GED instructor and ESL teacher. I tutor because I know what it’s like to struggle in school. I’ll never forget the day my high school counselor told me I might never go to college. Her words stung, but the inspiration the words gave me is irreplaceable.She drove me to succeed. My new found motivation propelled me from a C student to the top ten percent of my graduating high school class.
