Keisha was born and raised in Stamford, Connecticut. As a child, Keisha was a struggling student and gave teachers a hard time. Her mother sent her to spend summers with her Aunt who is a teacher in Florida. It was through her Aunt's influence Keisha discovered she wanted to be a teacher. In 2004, she went to Sacred Heart University and graduated with a Bachelors in Sociology. Keisha's extracurricular activities during college focused on working with students in urban areas where she tutored and mentored. After her undergrad, she spent three years working as Preschool teacher at a federally funded Head Start program serving low-income families. In 2012, she moved on to working as a para-professional at a local charter school in Bridgeport CT. In August 2014, Keisha earned a Masters in Early Childhood Education and then moved to Newark, NJ where she became a state certified teacher. In her free time she enjoys spending time with her family and friends. Keisha loves to listen to music, read, watch movies, and cook. Keisha has the passion to teach, encourage, and bring hope to students.

I have over 25 years of experience in education. I graduated from Howard University with a Bachelors Degree in Psychology, before getting my teachers certification. I received my Masters of Education in School Leadership from Cambridge College and a Masters of Education in School Counseling from the University of West Alabama. I have worked in elementary, middle and high school as a teacher and school counselor. As an elementary school teacher, I specialized in the teaching of reading and language arts. My love and excitement for reading followed me into the classroom which allowed me to have great success with struggling readers. As a school counselor, I used bibliotherapy to help students see themselves in characters and learn strategies to overcome various obstacles. When I ran out of books with the topics needed, I wrote my own coping skills book for kids. I help students identifying their learning styles, study skills, and much more while understanding and addressing underlying social and emotional barriers to success.

Teaching is my passion and I love helping others learn. I am able to create quality, yet comprehensive curriculum for my students that will thrust them to succeed. I am very detailed oriented, creative, and have a passion for ensuring student success. It is my endeavor to combine my range of experience with my wealth of education. This includes being a loving, motivating, supporting, fun, and integral educator who will make a positive contribution to each student. I want to help all students build confidence, which will enhance their self esteem as well as personal values. I received a BA in Psychology from Rhode Island College and a Master of Education degree from Cambridge College in Massachusetts. I am a graduate of Cambridge College in June 2012. I received a Master's in Special Education K-12. I lived in Italy prior to graduating college. A Senior Chief needed a tutor for her son who was struggling. I tutored the young man in reading and math. While my degree is for kindergarten through 12th grade, I enjoy working with kindergarten through 4th grade. I am passionate about reading, writing and math in grades kindergarten to 3rd. I believe education is a necessity for an improved quality of life and try to incorporate daily life within lessons.

I have been teaching high school math and SAT test prep since 2002 and GRE prep since 2008.When I am working with a student, I find it is best to first determine what areas they struggle with. Do they need help with basic concepts? Do they need help, in general, with test-taking? Once I am clear on what areas we need to focus on, we can really start to make progress. I feel that different approaches work with different students. The type of learner a student is will dictate how I can best help them succeed. I enjoy tutoring and interacting with all students whether they are "terrible" at math, or simply need a refresher!

At Burden Bearers Co-Operative School in Indianapolis IN, She taught music theory, piano, and ensembles. Ms. Garcia, through AmeriCorps, was a teaching associate for Magic Me Boston. Their assistance led to the creation of an intergenerational education program, promoting relationships between at-risk middle school students and older adults. The program encompassed visual arts, crafting, culture studies, math, and language arts. She worked as a teaching trainee for ACT in Cambridge MA, instructing high school students in music and science, tutoring elementary students in language arts, and assisting in the development of a summer camp for bilingual high school students emphasizing job and life skills. She is currently studying Communications- Professional Writing at Southern New Hampshire University. Her goal is to become a freelance writer/content copywriter in her own business. I grew up in Canada and my first degree was from Mt. St. Vincent Women's University in Nova Scotia, Canada. I received a B.A. in political science with a double minor in Women's Studies and Psychology. From there, I moved to the United States, where I started teaching and earned my Master's degree in Education, Special Education from Cambridge College. I went on to complete an Ed.S. online with Old Dominion University in Virginia, with the hopes of doing my doctorate. I stopped my doctorate before completing my dissertation during COVID as the school I was attending closed its doors permanently, and I haven't found an alternative. I may go back someday and finish, but for now, I'm happy with things as they are. I love teaching reading the most, because I am such an avid reader and feel that it is a wonderful skill to have. I have worked in other subjects such as Writing and Social Studies, but I am most passionate about teaching reading and helping students to overcome their struggles with that subject. I have been teaching for all of my adult life and started when I was 17 years old as a tutor for older adults who struggled with literacy skills. This ignited my passion for teaching. My love of teaching has stayed with me for my entire life and though it has been tested over time, I have never thought of doing any other job. My philosophy includes believing that all people are deserving of an education that can help enrich their lives and advance their skills. My life involves enjoying music, writing, reading, animals and nature. For me, teaching resembles to what doctors do with their patients. Just like a successful treatment, an effective instruction always begins with the right diagnosis. You will never see a doctor applying exact same treatment for all patients ignoring their backgrounds. Thus, an outstanding teacher must be a person who is an expert in identifying the student and his/her needs. Once the needs are determined, teacher must master the student centered instruction. Furthermore, it is imperative to be able to accurately assess the student with the right tools and techniques and be able to utilize the resources made available. Besides all these technical skills, an outstanding teacher must always be a caring person who always prioritizes student learning regardless of challenges facing him/her.

I have a BA and Masters of Science in Mathematics. I have been teaching all levels of Math for the past 14 years and I love to make it fun! It is also great to see students understand and succeed as they don't always realize how simple something can be when it is broken down into easier steps! I have taught middle school, high school and college level Mathematics.
