I recently graduated from Claremont McKenna College, where I studied biology and wrote my thesis on the potential link between gut microbes and depression. I was a general biology major, but have a passion for microbiology and health. In college, I taught fourth graders various STEM subjects weekly, and focused on hands-on engaging ways to teach these topics. I have also worked as an office assistant at my college's disability resource center, a camp counselor, and a soccer coach, so I have experience working with a wide range of age groups.Through tutoring, I hope to instill a passion for science in my clients, by making tough topics easy to understand and relatable to everyday experiences. As a recent graduate, I know how frustrating and confusing some of these topics can be, and I have developed my own tips and tricks to better understand them. I look forward to helping others work through those difficult topics and get them excited about science! In the future, I hope to attend medical school. When I'm not studying or tutoring science, I enjoy hiking and camping in the Pacific Northwest.

Education has been a passion of mine for quite some time. During college, I worked with Upward Bound – an incredible federal program that tutors and mentors high schoolers aspiring to be first generation college students. During my career, I’ve mentored students through several programs in the Greater New York Area. Whether it is as a tutor, coach or mentor – students have always been a part of my life as a professional and volunteer. My educational background is a BA in Political Psychology from Claremont McKenna College and an MA in Communications from Fairfield University. Written and verbal communication is a great strength of mine as both an academic and professional – English, History, the Social Sciences, etc. With that being said, I have worked with students of all ages on a variety of subjects. To me, mastery of a subject is a great accomplishment, but the greater goal should always be refining your broader skills as a student and scholar. These are the overarching characteristics that allow an individual to be adaptable and flourish in a variety of academic and professional environments. In my spare time, I like to stay active, travel and enjoy the outdoors.
I love tutoring and helping students better understand their subjects. I bring a unique way of approaching the subject that is meant to keep the student engaged and learning ranter than forcing them to recite a bunch of uninteresting facts over and over.I tutor a wide variety of subjects that I'm personally and professional passionate about. I was a comparative literature/religious studies dual major in college so I'm very familiar with history, writing, and literature analysis. In high school I took 8 AP classes and I'm familar with the rigors and stresses of these classes. I work hard with my students to make sure that they feel they can get 5s on all of their tests!Outside of teaching I love reading about history and playing guitar.
I am a college graduate with 6 years of after school teaching experience.I like to incorporate interests in learning and use goals, customized worksheets, and games to drive learning.I am confident, hard-working, and enthusiastic.
Before working with Varsity Tutors, I spent two years working full time with talented but under-resourced high school students gain access to prestigious colleges and universities. During that time I developed a tutoring style that is rooted in energetic working relationships and a thorough evaluation of student skills. I believe that tutoring is only effective when a student benefits from it long after our sessions are finished. For this reason, I stress that my students focus on and internalize the process and approaches that we review during our time together. My expertise lies primarily in teaching reading and writing. A writing instructor I seek to imbue my pupils with the ability to produce essays that are cogent, well structured, and display a distinct voice. When working with students on reading, my main objective is to make sure that they have a specific way to tackle dense passages with maximum retention. My methodology for test taking centers on context dependent process of elimination and the utilization of comprehension rather than memorization.I graduated from Claremont McKenna College on a full-ride scholarship with a B.A. in Government and Legal Studies and have familiarity with the college admission process that I would be happy to share with clients. Some of the best moments of my teaching career thus far have been celebrating admissions to Stanford, Occidental, MIT, and Dartmouth with former pupils and guiding six juniors in high school to scores of 10 and above on the ACT writing section in 2014-2015. I find times like these to be extremely rewarding and expect to have more of them in the future. In my spare time I like to read (working on David Foster Wallace's "Infinite Jest" currently), follow the Cubs, Bears, Bulls, and Blackhawks, and learn about global politics.
I have over 5 years of tutoring experience. I have experience tutoring in a diverse group of subjects for K-12 and college students.
I have a strong background in STEM - I earned my Bachelor's in Biophysics from Claremont McKenna College in 2019 and I'm currently pursuing my Master's in Analytics out of Georgia Tech.Additionally, I have experience teaching and experience tutoring at the middle and high school levels for almost 3 years.I firmly believe that every student is capable of learning even the most challenging topics and I would love to foster growth and learning for your student.
I recently graduated from Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, CA where I earned a Bachelors of Arts with honors in Government. I hope to attend law school in the future. I have tutored several students geometry, algebra, and pre-algebra helping them improve their understanding and accuracy of these topics. I tutor these subjects within math in addition to SAT math. I love math because of the great feeling one gets when solving a problem. Additionally, I have coached high school debaters who were nationally competitive. In that role, I helped them write and research on complex philosophical and policy topics. This experience, in addition to my writing-intensive major, has prepared me to tutor writing. I tutor 6th grade through 9th grade writing in addition to AP Government and History. I am passionate about these subjects because I love thinking about arguments. My tutoring philosophy is to focus on individual problems or assignments and work through examples with students; I do not lecture unless necessary. I find that students are more productive and successful when actively engaged. I strive to challenge my students while being patient and kind. Outside of academics, I am interested in cooking, travel, and skiing.
As a passionate educator with a Master's in Teacher Education from Claremont Graduate University, I bring over 25 years of tutoring experience across a variety of subjects, including Adult ESL, AP English Language and Composition, and College English. My teaching philosophy is rooted in fostering a supportive and engaging environment where each student feels valued and inspired to excel. I tailor my approach to meet individual learning needs, helping students build confidence and mastery in their skills. In addition to my commitment to education, I enjoy exploring historical literature, which deepens my connection to the curriculum and enhances my teaching. I am dedicated to helping all students succeed and instilling a lifelong love for language and literature.
Hello there! My name is Emily and I've been tutoring for several years. Because of my early fascination with mathematics, I have primarily taught algebra, geometry and calculus and have helped quite a few students prepare for the SAT and the ACT. However, this doesn't stop me from working with elementary scholars on counting and multiplication tables! My general tutoring style is relaxed yet focused. When I'm working with a student, I'll ask more questions at the beginning of the session to get a good idea of where the student stands and where there are some gaps. One of the biggest things I've noticed (especially in math!) is that if there isn't a good foundation, you won't be able to finish the whole house (i.e., your learning objective). By asking questions, we'll be able to fill in a few of those gaps and be more successful in your learning project!I look forward to helping you reach your learning goals!
I am a recent cum laude graduate of Claremont McKenna College in Southern California, and this summer I will begin studying at Columbia University Teachers College in New York where I am working to earn my master's in Education for 7-12 English. I have worked as Head Consultant at my school's Center for Writing and Public Discourse for the past three years. I was a member of my school's Educational Task Force where I taught weekend seminars for high school students who were brave enough to come in on Saturday mornings. For these students (many of whom were the first in their families to apply to college), I provided college essay help and was the lead teacher for a semester-long photojournalism/spoken-word course. Last summer I worked at an educational nonprofit in New York to support educational workshops and help organize a College App Essay Bootcamp for 150 students. Two summers ago I was the Teaching Artist Cadre Development & High School Readiness Project Intern at an arts and literacy non-profit in Chicago called Changing Worlds. The next summer as Education Intern I taught, organized lesson plans, and created lending library for a preschool for homeless children in Washington D.C. I have studied French for nine years and have studied abroad twice - once in Brest, Bretagne and once at Universit de Vincennes Saint-Denis in Paris. For fun I love to write satire/humor for a website I created, write and perform spoken word poetry, and train for my next big running goal. I love helping students identify their strengths and build on them to become confident, successful, and happy studiers!
My focus is on giving students the fundamental skills they need to succeed rather than focusing on test-specific tricks.I am a graduate of the University of Chicago, where I received an MA in the humanities with a focus on on disability studies. For my undergraduate education, I attended Claremont Mckenna College where I focused on English Literature.I have worked as a tutor and academic coach for the past five years. I have a passion for helping students learn how to self-assess and structure their own work so that they can develop holistic, sustainable ways of learning. While I tutor a range of subjects, I most enjoy teaching English, Literature, Writing, and History. In my off time, I practice capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian martial art, and enjoy playing chess.
I am a recent graduate from Claremont McKenna College with a dual degree in Government and Chemistry. I plan to attend medical school after two gap years, hopefully pursuing a career in Community Medicine. While at Claremont McKenna, I tutored Organic Chemistry and was a substitute teacher while home on breaks. I am most excited to teach organic and physical chemistry, because these are challenging subjects, but when they click and students start to understand them, it feels that much better! I am also excited to tutor SAT math. Being able to excel at standardized tests opens many doors for students, and being able to help students reach their goals is very rewarding. In my free time, I rock climb, hike, camp, and ski.

I believe that learning should be fun, easy, and individualized. I am good at breaking down complex concepts into simple, bite-sized chunks. I believe there are a lot of ways to learn the same concepts, and I enjoy making each lesson relevant to the person I am teaching. I also like to laugh and have a good time. I am especially experienced in economics, finance, math, and history, but I enjoy all subjects and I hope to help you enjoy them as well! Looking forward to working together :)
I spent 20 years in elementary and middle school classrooms. For 18 of those, I was a founding teacher and Vice Principal at KIPP Academy Houston. During that time, I learned a key lesson: great teaching begins with imagining what it's like to be in the student's shoes. When a student is stuck, the problem is more than confusion. It can feel defeating. My approach is to find the moment where the confusion began, go back there together, and help them unpack it. I focus on changing "I don't get this" into "huh, that makes sense." My sessions are rigorous yet also filled with humor. I won two national teaching awards: a two-time recipient of the KIPP Kinder Excellence in Teaching Award, and I was profiled in "American Teacher: Heroes in the Classroom." I am most proud of the fact that the majority of my students went on to become the first in their families to attend college.
