I have a passion for learning and I love to spread that joy to others. I did a double major in mathematics and music at Knox College and extensively studied many core aspects of mathematics that most students never get a chance to touch. I believe that a true understanding of mathematics comes from a deeper understanding of these principles. It's more rewarding to know why mathematical principles work the way they do and be able to apply them more broadly than to simply know rote computations. That being said, the student should always be in control of their goals. It's my job to provide feedback, help them reach their goals and gain confidence in their abilities.

I am a dedicated STEM educator with over 20 years of experience teaching high school science, including advanced placement courses. I hold a B.A. in Chemistry from Knox College and have two masters' degrees in science education and Teacher Leadership. Throughout my career, I have been passionate about making STEM accessible and engaging for all, believing that every student deserves a strong foundation in science to unlock future opportunities. Past students have told me that I have the ability to take complex scientific concepts and break them down into manageable, understandable parts, I strive to make students feel supported and inspired. One of the most rewarding parts of my work is witnessing the pride and excitement students experience when they conquer challenging topics. Outside of the classroom, I enjoy traveling, exploring the night sky through my interest in astronomy, and taking long walks with my dogs.

My experience includes a teaching assistantship at Knox College for Beginning Fiction Writing course under Professor Barbara Tannert-Smith. I have led numerous classes, workshops and discussions in undergraduate and graduate study. My subjects include English, college essay writing, -creative writing, public speaking, literature, Essay editing, expository writing, grammar and mechanics. My hope is to foster calm, confidence, success, and most importantly, unexpected joy to the students I will be working with. Reading and writing (both creatively and analytically) can be overwhelming, intimidating, even boring. I want to battle that stalemate. I want to help students find what works for them in terms of study habits. I want to help students recognize their strengths in order to conquer their perceived weaknesses. Conquering a subject, or subjects, that frighten or breeds indifference to a student, can be one of the most invigorating and propulsive experiences possible. I will work to my utmost ability to make that happen with calm, humor, and listening to those I meet.Literary scholarship and the many facets of writing have interested me since I was a child. My father and I would make up stories together when I was about three years old, and my passion for storytelling, its methods, and its power has never ceased to amaze me. As my scholarship continued, I came to admire and respect the mechanical and stylistic elements of not only creative writing, but also expository/persuasive writing. The latter was much more difficult for me. Upon finding my voice and my strength to make an engaging case in essay-writing. I discovered a wellspring of respect for myself, and hope that I could continue to learn about language, and refine my skills in the process. I am not just interested in reading and writing in an academic sense. One of my favorite sources of analysis and pleasure comes from the story-telling of the nouveau Golden Era of television (Mad Men, Deadwood, Better Call Saul, et cetera), and also the story-telling of professional wrestling. I find these multimedia examples especially useful in trying to crack difficult concepts and craft choices in print literature and writing. I think extrapolating such concepts, frameworks, rules, and methods from other disciplines (television, video games, marketing and PR strategies) help illuminate literature and writing in accessible, exciting ways.

I am an expert in SPSS software, including Statistics, Modeler and Amos. I worked at SPSS (later IBM) for 25 years as a technical support specialist, curriculum developer and a trainer. In my role as a trainer, I taught statistical analysis/research topics ranging from descriptive and inferential statistics to more advanced methods such as predictive modeling, machine learning, segmentation, structural equation modeling, and text analytics. I have also personally used SPSS software in my own research for over 40 years. For my Ph.D. dissertation, I used SPSS to analyze public opinion polls to identify the key drivers of why Americans voted the way they did in Presidential elections. I also used SPSS software to analyze election data for a number of papers I presented at conferences, including the Social Science Research History Association and American Historical Association conferences. In addition to being well versed in SPSS software and statistical analysis, am also a trained historian with experience teaching United States history at the University level. I have a Ph.D. in 20th Century Political History, with emphasis on the New Deal Era and Quantitative Methods in History. While at the University of Illinois, Chicago, I taught survey courses on the history of the United States, as well as some specialized courses including The History of the 1960s and The History of the United States during the New Deal-Fair Deal Era.

As an undergraduate, I was privileged to attend Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois. Knox's small class size and emphasis on senior faculty teaching introductory courses made a lasting impression on me. I learned to learn in a collegial atmosphere. As a graduate student (MS & PhD) at Ohio State University, I successfully taught for my entire graduate career. I was nominated several times for the Excellence in Teaching Award. Working with and being a student at a large state school helped round out for me the variety of educational experiences available to students. From both large and small schools, I have adapted those traits of those teachers who most positively influenced me. In my teaching over 20+ years, the following points of emphasis come to mind.1. All students are individuals. They deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. This is a shared responsibility.2. Love of the subject and knowledge of the subject I am teaching go a long way to imparting the true excitement of learning. I have mastered many fields and work to intersperse "real-world" examples into my teaching.3. A Russian author said, "You can teach anything to anyone if you truly understand it yourself." I believe that. I work hard to truly understand the subject and choose not to try to teach a subject in which I am not fluent.4. In my teaching approach, I try use the Socratic Method to show the student that he already knows the answer to his question. I do this by directed questioning, leading the student from beginning to middle to end in a logical progression. The result is a student who learns to have confidence in himself and in applying the information he has already mastered.5. I receive back from teaching students more than I put in. I am constantly overwhelmed and gratified by the feeling I get from seeing the expression on a student's face when he finally grasps a difficult concept.

Hi, I'm James. I am a math and data science graduate, and I have spent more than a year tutoring statistics and introductory math courses. I also have experience working with younger students as a camp counselor, working with kids from 7 to 16 to help them develop into driven, self-sufficient young people. My passion for tutoring comes from a desire to help students build confidence in their skills and develop a genuine understanding of concepts, especially in math. My approach is all about meeting students where they are. I like to start by figuring out what they already know and understand, then use that as a foundation to strengthen areas where they feel less confident. I like to use simple examples similar to the problems they find challenging and work them through them step by step before giving them an opportunity to try on their own. I am a tutor who is patient, approachable, and dedicated to your success. If this is what you are looking for, I'd love to help.

My teaching philosophy is, first and foremost, getting the student interested in the subject, and then moving on to the particular area in which they are struggling. Everything is interesting! Each student requires specifically tailored ways in which to engage their interest. As a writing and philosophy tutor in college, I would quickly assess the most compelling piece of information, and then continue to work on what they are struggling with. Writing is often puzzling, and I have solved many puzzles!I am a recent graduate of Knox College, with a major in Philosophy and a minor in Creative Writing. I was one course away from graduating with a double major in English Literature, but I chose to focus on my Philosophy Studies. I earned an award for my Philosophical writing through the Illinois Philosophical Association in 2016.

I have Bachelor's degrees in Mathematics and Economics, master's degree in Finance, and experience in teaching mathematics and government finance in the United States and abroad. I believe tutoring should be a structured, but personal and fun experience for everyone. I enjoy teaching mathematics to those in middle and high school, as it is the time when mathematics becomes rigorous and abstracted. I focus on mathematics (middle and high school, college) and selected programming languages (Java). I will work with beginner guitar enthusiasts interested in popular styles.

Ciao! I'm Melissa, and I want to help you learn Italian. I am the author of four novels set in Italy and am fluent in the Italian language. I translated my second novel into Italian. Through my dual language Italian blog site www.StudentessaMatta.com. I help others learn the language through posts I write in Italian and Youtube videos and podcasts that I record in Italian. I offer conversational chat opportunities through my website, and twice a year, I organize and lead small-group Italian language immersion programs in Italy. I also organize Italian language homestay vacations. I began learning Italian 20 years ago and have personal knowledge and insight regarding the best learning practices and how you can create an Italian immersion program right at home. I work with very beginning students who are just starting to learn the language and advanced students who wish to practice and improve their conversation skills. I believe language learning is fun, and there is nothing better than speaking Italian when you travel to Italy. Ready to get started? Andiamo!

Hi! My name is Archita and I am part of the Varsity Tutors program in the Chicagoland area. I am an Elementary Education major, and I just graduated from Knox College this summer. From a young age, I have always enjoyed helping people. After coming to college, I decided that one of the best ways to help people would be through getting a major that would teach me the necessary skills so that I can be an adequate support for people. The same love of helping others is what brought me to Varsity Tutors.Through my major, I learned how to talk to students, how to teach, how to manage time, as well as how to be part of a major support system for each child. As a tutor for this program, I hope to utilize all of the above for each student that I help so that they do not feel as though school is hard and help them be motivated and encouraged.
