Little did I know becoming an educator would be more than a career choice; it became a time for my own character education. The years I served as a classroom teacher were as much about me learning as they were about instructing others. Since then, my commitment to support the development and self-improvement of others has not wavered.Ten years as a public school teacher equates to approximately 2,000 students and was a pivotal time in cultivating skills as an instructional designer. It was also critical in honing my abilities as a facilitator who successfully engages participants and adapts instruction to meet diverse learning styles.I am NYS certified English teacher with ten years of instructional, design and assessment experience for both general and honors programs, and a Master of Science degree in Adolescence Education. I specialize in tutoring English, Literature, Writing, Vocabulary, SAT, ACT, NYS English Regents, and general topics related to language arts.

Before I started my career in teaching I substituted in many school zones to see if I would like teaching. I also coached the girls softball team. I enjoy children and found that I really wanted to help the kids. I received my Masters in Earth Science. I have been teaching science for eight years in the New York City System specifically in the Bronx. I am eager to help students in small groups or one on one. Teaching in such a diverse environment really helped in my classroom management and differential teaching methods. Earth Science is everywhere--just outside!
I graduated from Monroe College in 2003 with a degree in Business Management. In 2006 I graduated from Mercy College with my Masters in Student with Learning Disabilities. I'm currently a Middle School Special Education Teacher. A great tutor is someone who is able to work off of the students' interest and make it part of their learning process, which is a quality I possess. I treat each session as if we are learning together, which we are. Outside of academia I enjoy playing video games, collecting comics, listening to all types of music, and reading.
With over 20 years of experience in education, I bring a deep passion for helping students grow into confident, capable readers and writers. I've spent my career working closely with learners of all levels, guiding them to strengthen their English Language Arts skills from mastering reading comprehension to crafting clear, compelling writing. My teaching style can be described as the 3C's of success: captivate, consistency and catapult. Captivate=Every student can learn when given an opportunity to engage them in captivating lessons that reflect their interests while covering the core curriculum. Consistency=Tutoring is most effective when it functions like fitness trainingrepetition is key to retention. Catapult= Learners will elevate their skills, gain and retain knowlege which boost their confidence. Whether you're looking to improve your writing, better understand what you read, or build strong academic skills, I'm here to help you reach your goals.
I am a former New York City public school teacher with experience in English, journalism, economics and global history. I believe that all children can learn and that it is my responsibility to help each student discover which style of learning suits them best. My goal is to help students build stamina—important in an age of increased standardized testing—and provide learning strategies that will help them become life-long independent learners. One of my favorite ways to teach is through the use of questioning—a strategy that dates back thousands of years to Socrates. During tutoring sessions, observers will notice that I will usually ask a series of questions designed to allow the learner to reach a correct conclusion on his or her own. This teaching strategy develops critical-thinking skills and provides a sense of personal satisfaction to the learner that does not come from being simply provided with answers. To keep things interesting and aid retention, students may also be asked to assume the role of teacher during a tutoring session. (Research suggests that student retention increases to 90 percent when the student is asked to teach a concept or skill to another person.)Also, students will sometimes be asked to tell me everything they know about a topic, then be encouraged to write down a series of questions they may have. Our tutoring session then may focus on strategies to help the student answer his or her own questions. (This format for tutoring sessions is suited to students who are struggling in a given subject area and to those who are expecting to continue their education after high school.)As a high school teacher, I was known for using technology in my classroom in order to help every student learn at his or her own pace. Students often participated in online discussions using their cell phones and created essays that were posted online for other students to review. Before becoming a teacher, I was a newspaper reporter and manager at national magazines such as Harper's Bazaar and Fitness. During my career in journalism, I learned that the written word is a powerful tool. I decided to become a teacher to empower students through the use of writing.
As a child, I was privileged to have a positive educational experience within an area of the Bronx that is still considered to be of high need. One thing that has resonated with me in my childhood education were the teachers that I had. My kindergarten teacher Ms. Rolfe showed me how to make pink chocolate on Valentines Day. My first grade teacher, Ms. Clayborne, gave away her lunch breaks so that she could help me with my spelling. My second grade teacher, Ms. Dillon, inspired me to become an avid reader. My third grade teacher, Mrs. Kasper, made sure I did my homework every night when she noticed that I was slacking. The optimism of Mrs. Hamilton in fourth grade motivated me to make the honor roll, and my fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Farkus pushed me to get one of the highest standardized tests scores in the school. Each of these public school teachers created a climate within the class thatpromoted learning and student achievement.Over the years, I have met many professionals that have shared horror stories about their experiences with teachers who doubted them or did not set them up for success. As an educator, I have become cognizant of the fact that I ultimately create the learning environment of my students. Knowing that students depend on me each day to guide them into become better versions of themselves is an incredible task that I amwilling to take. As an educator, I hope to empower the youth of today to become the leaders of tomorrow. And as a New York State teacher, one way in which I know I can achieve thisis by paying it forward. My goal would be to provide the same rigorous and joyful education my former teachers provided me.
My mission is to inspire students to believe in themselves. I teach students with compassion and patience. I work towards helping students progress by meeting their intellectual and emotional needs. I firmly believe in the implementation of effective practices and fostering an environment that encourages student growth and positive results. Motivating students to be independent thinkers and apply the strategies taught to them will help them overcome challenges. In doing this, students are able to accomplish their goals. I truly enjoy working with students to help them excel and achieve their highest potential.
Highly motivated educator with demonstrated leadership in improving academic and personal development of students from diverse populations. Experience includes working in urban public school districts in the Bronx, Harlem, and Brooklyn, New York. International ESL/ELL teaching experience in two well-known universities in Saudi Arabia. Highly motivated communicator skilled in building positive relationships with a commitment to helping all students meet their highest potential.
I am a graduate student at Mercy College, studying to earn my Doctorate of Physical Therapy. Two things I am passionate about are movement, and helping people, which luckily fits very nicely to my career goals. Education is so important and should be a fun experience for everyone. By helping students on an individual level, I hope to make learning science more enjoyable. Biology is my specialty but can help explain basic concepts in Chemistry and Physics as well. I have helped a variety of students, ranging from 2nd grade to undergraduate in college. In my spare time, I am often studying, running, playing with my two dogs, or watching sports (football, hockey, and basketball are my favorites, but I'll watch anything).
I am a certified English teacher who has taught and tutored students in grades 7 - 12 for 23 years. I then attained my Master of Arts in English Literature in 2011 from Mercy College. I enjoy teaching and tutoring because I love to witness the moments when my students are successful. My objective as an educator is to learn about my students in order to assist them in discovering their strengths. This is so that they can learn how to help themselves at reaching their own goals.
