I love helping students because I enjoy teaching. My core values are goodness, kindness, and patience, and I believe that it's important to use my gift of teaching to help children. They will grow up to be adults who will shape the world, and if they're going to be successful, they need to be taught. I have a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Science and Public Health from California State University. I tutor all core subjects in elementary, middle, and high school, with a focus on biology. I'm working towards becoming an elementary school teacher. Outside of academia, I enjoy baking.

Karin McKie, MFA, compiles curriculum and personalizes teaching for a broad spectrum of students. I specialize in tutoring all standardized tests, including the LSAT, SAT, PSAT, ACT, GRE, HSPT, ISEE, Accuplacer, STAAR, TOEFL/IELTS, ASVAB, all AP/IB English and history classes, and more. I also created and published a simple reading annotation system and related strategies specifically to tackle timed tests, as well as teaching critical reading, comparative literature, public speaking, and theater. As a professional writer and editor, I coach students in persuasive writing for schoolwork, college application and supplemental essays, internship and job applications, and the like. For decades, I've taught and lectured at universities, schools, and with individuals in Chicagoland and the Bay Area, and to online students of all ages around the world. I customize study plans with learners and their advocates to utilize existing abilities and add new techniques to reach personal and scholastic goals. I have a BS in Communications and Theater, and an MFA in Creative Writing. I have completed Continuing Education courses at Stanford, Northwestern and DePaul Universities. I'm a professional features writer and culture critic. I've edited Perspective design journal and Reed literary magazine and have performed memoir essays I've written on Chicago Public Radio. I come from a family of teachers and was fortunate to grow up at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, where my anthropologist mom was Education Director. Since early childhood, I've been immersed in multicultural and ELL education. I've devoted my personal and professional time to diversity and storytelling, starting at public TV station WETA in my hometown outside Washington, D.C., where I was certified as a trainer with Sesame Street's Preschool Education Project. I've also taught creativity and teambuilding through improvisation to all ages (as well as creating a kids summer camp), reading for the SAG Foundations BookPALS (Performing Artists for Literacy in Schools) program, plus reading and writing skills to at-risk students through the Park District's Kraft Great Kids Program. I've assisted many of my arts marketing clients, including Barrel of Monkeys and Kidworks Touring Theatre, with youth literacy programs at schools and libraries throughout the Windy City.
I believe learning is a life long journey. Every day is a chance to discover something new. I was fortunate enough to grow up with many teachers in my family, and I developed a passion for expanding my knowledge in early childhood. It is wonderful to be able to share this path of education as a tutor and offer support to students.I have a Bachelors of Arts degree in Psychology which I used to teach lower elementary classes upon college graduation. I also had the chance to be a substitute teacher for elementary and high school students.Recently, I have had the opportunity to travel through Europe while teaching ESL online to students of all ages. It was very interesting to hear how many ways that the English language is approached in other countries. I enjoyed helping my students with pronunciation and vocabulary words. It was terrific to watch their progress and grasp of another language.
I am a graduate of San Jose State University's graduate school of Mass Communications, and I have been a professional published magazine writer and editor for over 30 years, and a high school and college level tutor for six years. I own and operate a communications consulting company, and have been an adjunct college professor in Northern California for 12 years, teaching beginning and advanced writing, critical thinking, film analysis and humanities courses.Improving writing skills requires hands-on practice. As a writing tutor, my approach is to quantify specific concept areas that require improvement and then focusing each tutoring session with practical exercises that help students hone their skills, while at the same time recognizing personal growth and achievement to master specific goals. In my spare time I enjoy vegetable gardening, hiking, live theatre, and watching sports.

I entered a program for No Child Left Behind and mentored at-risk students in various grades, mostly focused in a high school setting. My main focus is to build on independent learning and mentor students to become proactive members of the community. I believe strongly that any student of mine can be a leader and become accountable, optimistic, and confident.
I attended college in California. When I started I definitely thought I would be an engineer. After 3 years, I decided that I was not really interested in pure engineering - it was too dry, boring, and impersonal for me. I finished with an entirely different degree - a Bachelors in Psychology. After I graduated, I found the ideal job - helping engineers design things that people can use safely and easily. The job is called Human Factors Engineering. Later I went back to school and finished my engineering with a Masters in Industrial and Systems Engineering. While I think working as a pure engineer would be boring - I do appreciate the logic and precision of science and mathematics. These are tools that allow us to predict and control the future! Phones, computers, cars, bridges, buildings, and the space station were all created with science and mathematics. Not only are these powerful tools, but learning math and science can help you become better thinkers. The logical process used to solve science and math problems can be used to solve all sorts of problems - from how to build a fence to how to make an important decision!I like to teach by using examples - it can help the student get another perspective on the concept, one that they are more familiar with. I also like to use drawings and graphic aids. And as a lesson concludes, I want to be certain they fully understand the topic. To make certain students understand a concept, I ask them to explain it to back to me - not using my words, but their own.For my own enjoyment, I like travel and exploration. A few years ago I had a chance to live in Europe for over 6 months. I also like construction - I once built my house, including plumbing and electrical work. And, although my license is not active now, I enjoy flying. I flew my own small Cessna from the west coast to nearly the east coast.

I LOVE helping students feel confident and excited about learning. It's so rewarding to see students overcome their anxieties and discover the joy in education. My goal is to create a supportive environment where students can not only master the material but also have fun doing it. I earned my B.A. in English and my K-8 teaching credential in California, which gave me a solid foundation in teaching and understanding students' unique needs. I've had the pleasure of working with students across a wide range of subjects, including ESL/ELL, elementary and middle school English, math, science, social studies, reading, and writing. This diverse experience allows me to really connect with students at different levels and help them grow in a way that makes sense for them. Math is definitely my favorite subject to tutor. There's something so exciting about helping students realize they're "math people" after all. I love watching them go from feeling frustrated to confident as they start to understand the concepts and see how math can be fun and logical. It's incredibly satisfying to help students break through that barrier. My teaching approach is all about balancing big-picture ideas with practical, hands-on practice. I want students to understand the "why" behind what they're learning and then give them plenty of opportunities to put that knowledge into practice. Whenever I can, I connect lessons to the real world to show students how what they're learning can actually be useful. I also make a point to tailor my approach to each student's background and strengths, building on what they already know and helping them feel more confident as they move forward.
