I am a University of California, Irvine graduate and received a BS in mathematics from there. My life has been in alternating states of privilege since my birth. I was born into a middle class family with enough finances to live modestly, yet with grandparents that knew how to spoil me rotten; that is until I reached the age of six. In 2002 my mother filed for divorce against my father for domestic and child abuse. Child Protective Services took my three siblings and me away from our family and placed us into Orangewood Foundation, a facility for foster youth. As a mere preschooler, I had no idea what that would entail for us.After the divorce finalized and our mother finally regained full custody she was allowed to move in with our grandparents who had since been our guardians after we were released from the foster care establishment. We were finally allowed to be a family again outside of a visiting room, yet nothing felt the same. After such traumatic events my family struggled to regain our footing in this rat race that we call life, or at least thats how my mother described it. Placed on food stamps and disability, my mother did her best to raise four children with the help of two grandparents that had to come out of retirement to help support the family.Life is arduous and unfair; a lesson I learned from a young age. Due to the circumstances my mothers time was spent mostly keeping the family functioning, which meant there was not always the most amount of time for parenting, especially when she was exhausted and had four young children with endless amounts of energy and need for attention. I understood that sometimes even though I wanted or even needed my mother, my siblings needed her more, and I learned how to better myself such that my mother would have one less thing to worry about at the end of the day.As I grew older and excelled in my studies, I realized I enjoyed two subjects more than the others, French and physics. I started in French 1 my freshman year and continued it throughout high school. My French professor Mme. Sloan encouraged me to keep with the language even after high school, and as a reward for staying with the French program she even planned a trip to Paris for my classmates and me during Spring break our senior year. Even after I was accepted into UCI as physics major, I kept my French skills up with a minor. As for my passion for physics, it started with a man by the name of Kevin Dwyer. I walked into honors physics my junior year and was as stunned as a deer in headlights from most of the physical intricacies of the world so clearly explained. To quote my university classical mechanics professor, It was almost as if I had a religious revelation when I first learned about physics. I threw myself into the work and loved every second of it and I am ever grateful that I had found a teacher that was able to captivate me. Before taking his class, I was unsure of what I wanted to study at University. After taking his AP physics class my senior year, I knew with unwavering certainty, I was going to study physics at UCI.I started at UCI in the summer session right before fall quarter starts. UCI has a program, called Summer Start, which is meant to bridge the gap between high school and college life. I was a part of Summer Bridge, a subdivision of the summer start program for low-income, first generation college students. Funnily enough, I would move into my dorm exactly on my eighteenth birthday, which meant my mother would be sending her son off to college the day he came of legal age. Given our family history it was tough for everyone, including myself. Although we were not able to have our traditional family birthday dinner on my birthday, we celebrated the day before to make the most of my last night spent at home. We set out the next day in our mini van loaded with all things collegiate all while choking back tears. This was the first time I would truly be on my own since I was in foster care and my mother knew that she could no longer shelter me from the world. I was welcomed into the program with open arms; as it turns out there are many people from all walks of life that have experienced excessive adversity and we were all looking for support and found it in each other. The Summer Bridge program made transitioning to university life a breeze, so much though that I could not wait to give back to the community that had given so much to me. I applied to be a discussion leader for the same University Studies class so that I might be able to pass on the knowledge that had been bestowed upon me. I received the position for that summer and the summer after I returned from studying abroad. This community has allowed me to reach out for help in times of need, but has also allowed me to offer advice and support to fellow students going through similar struggles.Fast forward a few years and I am in my third year of university and probably my biggest. My second year was spent planning for my third year, as I was bound and determined to study abroad in New Zealand since the day I found it possible. There are a myriad of reasons I chose New Zealand, but the most simple and greatest of them all was because I admired the culture and the landscape and I wanted to experience what life was like for them. As a part of applying to the program I needed to do research on my host country and apply to scholarships. Fortunately enough I was awarded the STEAM scholarship for students studying abroad as a STEM or Arts major, the only male student out of the six students selected. I went on to study at the University of Auckland and experienced life in ways I never thought possible. I roomed with Kiwis (not the fruit or bird), met travelers from around the world, jumped out of a perfectly good airplane, and made the memories of a lifetime. And as clich as it sounds, I found myself. I found myself surrounded by culture of people that invigorated the hope that I still have in humanity. I was fortunate enough to find a haven that re-awaked the inspiration to keep my dream alive that had started to fade with the passing years. I left a piece of my heart in Aotearoa; in the friends and memories we shared and in my footsteps left in the jagged earth.Studying abroad was more than just courses being checked off on list for my diploma, it was the recognition of what I wanted to do with my life. I want to eventually start my own company and learn how to run a business so that I can share my ideas and potential inventions with the world. I was so excited to hear this news because I knew that it meant that now he would be able to take AP Calculus which would, in turn, make him a more competitive candidate his dream aerospace engineering program.In my spare time, I enjoy reading. My favorite days are ones that are spent with a novel. My other hobbies include playing piano, photography, running, hiking, yoga, and travel.

I began studying Japanese in high school. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Japanese Language and Literature from UC Berkeley, my Master of Arts in Japanese from Indiana University, and my Doctor of Philosophy in East Asian Languages and Literature from UC Irvine. After receiving my PhD, I served as a Lecturer at UC Irvine and Stanford University, a Visiting Professor at University of Oregon, and an Assistant Professor at Murray State University. While most of my teaching experience has been on the collegiate level, I did serve as substitute teacher in Los Angeles and spent two months working at a language magnet school teaching Japanese. I bring both experience in the collegiate classroom and from several trip to Japan to my tutoring in Japanese Language; as a tutor I want to bring all this experience to help students further their passion and understanding of Japanese language and culture. I am also available to tutor in math, a subject I continue to enjoy since high school. My teaching and research philosophy is driven by asking questions and looking for answers along with dialogue; I try to bring this approach to tutoring to work with students to address the matters they want to learn about. My spare time I spend reading to further my knowledge as well as write articles, playing and lecturing about Japanese court music, and going for morning walks.

I graduated cum laude from the University of California, Irvine's school of Public Health Sciences in 2013. In addition to this, I was very involved around my college campus. I played five intramural sports, ran my own program in student government, which brought student teaching to UC Irvine, and served as president of my fraternity where I managed more than 60 members.I am a patient, kind-hearted, and intelligent person who truly values the importance of education in a young individual's life. I am currently applying to medical school and understand the plight of the modern student. I enjoy teaching and it gives me a lot of satisfaction to watch others learn and grow through their academics. I enjoy working with students of all ages from elementary to high school and even in some special cases, college sciences.During college, I tutored more than a dozen courses from start to finish. By using analogies, drawing diagrams, and asking the student questions, I was able to break through to students who were previously panicked about the possibility of failure. I believe in an "active" approach to tutoring which includes asking the student questions to not only get closer to a complicated answer, but to build the student's confidence. In addition, I always try to identify exactly where in the thinking process a student is struggling. After tackling this issue, I have been able to explain concepts and new ideas much more clearly and effectively.

The terms ‘teacher’ and ‘mentor’ are often used interchangeably. It is taken for granted that there is a key component that sets them apart. That component is simply: perspective. Teachers provide knowledge and skills, whilst mentors provide a lens through which a mentee can understand how to apply the knowledge they have gained. There are various accreditations and certifications necessary to become a teacher; yet mentors call upon life experiences to help mentees on a more intrinsic level. This key difference necessitates mentors to make strong personal connections with their mentees, calling upon knowledge learned from different aspects of life. Unlike specialized teaching, this can include but is not limited to various areas of subject knowledge. In other words, teachers teach exclusively while mentors teach inclusively.If we see the two—teacher and mentor—as opposite ends of a spectrum, I posit a tutor must fall somewhere in the middle. Tutors must possess not only the skills and qualifications, but also the personality and experience(s) necessary to connect with their clients—to mentor them to be better achievers while simultaneously teaching them to be masters of their subject(s)— which is why I am the best candidate for a tutor. I have worked as a mentor and tutor with children and youth varying from ages 5 to 18 in settings ranging from inner city after school programs to orphanages and refugee camps in developing countries. As disclosed in my resume, my extensive undergraduate career has given me a wealth of experience and knowledge. These, along with my qualifications, make me the most effective tutor in reading and writing.Because academic writing requires research and citation, critical reading, reading comprehension and writing skills are symbiotic. My exceptional writing and reading skills have contributed to my high graduating grade point average and Magna Cum Laude status. Besides rarely receiving lower than a B+ on all of my community college writing assignments, receiving tutoring for my University of California personal statements strengthened my writing skills. Once at UCI, I studied abroad for a year at the University of Ghana (British style of Education) and a semester at Kings College in London, where reading and writing skills are more integral to success in the than in America. Therefore passing my courses with such high marks required said skills to be solidified.Throughout the yearlong application process for the Fulbright Fellowship, I worked with a writing specialist(s) and various mentors to produce a grant proposal and personal statement strong enough to assist me in achieving finalist status for the most competitive Fulbright award. Over the course of my final year at UCI, I conducted undergraduate research for a yearlong Advanced Field Study course, and my final paper and project received an award of distinction for the School of Social Ecology, among many other significant writing achievements.On a personal note, I would say I am a lot of fun. During the course of my undergraduate career I travelled to 16 countries where I immersed myself in different cultures. Besides many amazing stories, this has helped me to become a more adaptable personality. I have taught Sahaja Yoga Meditation to thousands of people around the world. In my free time I sing, do yoga and calisthenics, and work on my uncle's farm outside of Madison. I am also a photographer, poet, and writer. I have a thirst for new experiences and embrace change. I look forward to sharing my skills, knowledge, and experience with someone in need!

I am a graduate of the University of California, Irvine and the University of Arizona. I received a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences and a Bachelor of Arts in Art History from UCI and a Master of Public Health concentrated in Family and Child Health with a subspecialty in Global Health from the University of Arizona. I have over 8 years of coaching and teaching experience from the middle school to the graduate school level. I love teaching and have tutored many students, peers, and friends in a vast range subjects from epidemiology and physiology to art history and essay writing and even volleyball. I thoroughly enjoy both the humanities and sciences, which is why they are my favorite subjects to tutor. When I begin tutoring a student, my goal is to tailor learning strategies to the student and have the student understand the why behind what they are learning rather than solely memorizing the topic. I am a graduate from UC Irvine, and grew up in Southern California. I began tutoring students in high school for science and math and picked up private tutoring for calculus and physics in college. I graduated UC Irvine as a biology major and a psychology minor. I am currently a graduate student at Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester conducting research in Biophysical Chemistry. I recently graduated in June 2017 from the University of California - Irvine with two Bachelor degrees. One was in Biomedical Engineering and the other was in Materials Science and Engineering. Since my sophomore year of high school, I've worked as a Private Tutor. I have worked with students ranging from ages 10-16. I am passionate about Science Education and making science accessible to people of all backgrounds. I have taught seven semesters worth of science classes at California State University, Long Beach. I coached the science section of academic decathlon at Pacifica High School in Garden Grove for two years. I am currently running an after school engineering program at Pacifica High School in collaboration with the University of California, Irvine chapter of Engineers Without Borders.
