As a student of life, education, both formal and informal, energizes me. On the formal front, I have my AA in Psychology, my BA in Criminology, and my MS in E-Commerce, and I have an equally diverse post-studies career history. My love of education has taken me to Southern California where I fed my love of law and learned about film. Next, I visited rural Florida with a stint at a Community Theatre. I've even spent a fair amount of time in the Hospitality Industry in Las Vegas, which, unexpectedly, introduced me to the construction industry. Through all of this, I have been a professional tutor for profit and pro bono. I believe education should be available to everyone regardless of age, sex, or socio-economic status, and I utilize learning identification to impart wisdom in the most effective way possible for each student's needs. I love that magical moment when the student "gets it." With experience in a broad range of subjects, mathematics is the most enjoyable for me, as well as LSAT Logic Games I'm the weirdo doing LSAT games at the tea house. My spare time finds me in nature for hikes and trail runs, and I can regularly be found on an obstacle course (Spartan, Tough Mudder, SISU, etc.) or doing an extreme endurance events either racing or supporting friends. Life is to be learned and lived!

I began studying Japanese in high school. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Japanese Language and Literature from UC Berkeley, my Master of Arts in Japanese from Indiana University, and my Doctor of Philosophy in East Asian Languages and Literature from UC Irvine. After receiving my PhD, I served as a Lecturer at UC Irvine and Stanford University, a Visiting Professor at University of Oregon, and an Assistant Professor at Murray State University. While most of my teaching experience has been on the collegiate level, I did serve as substitute teacher in Los Angeles and spent two months working at a language magnet school teaching Japanese. I bring both experience in the collegiate classroom and from several trip to Japan to my tutoring in Japanese Language; as a tutor I want to bring all this experience to help students further their passion and understanding of Japanese language and culture. I am also available to tutor in math, a subject I continue to enjoy since high school. My teaching and research philosophy is driven by asking questions and looking for answers along with dialogue; I try to bring this approach to tutoring to work with students to address the matters they want to learn about. My spare time I spend reading to further my knowledge as well as write articles, playing and lecturing about Japanese court music, and going for morning walks.

I currently attend the University of California Irvine. I am pursuing a degree in Biology and will graduate in 2014. Ever since middle school, I have been infatuated with the sciences. I've always had a fascination with trying to understand the world around me. This mentality has fueled my intense interest in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. I prefer to approach the sciences with an introspective lens as a tool to figure out a piece of a grand puzzle, rather than as an isolated unit. In addition to tutoring science classes, I have also helped many students with standardized testing yielding great results. In my free time I enjoy playing music, biking, and reading.

Fundamentally, science is the study of how things work ... both theoretically and practically. It is where we utilize the skills from all disciplines to solve real world problems and create future technologies. In order to truly study science a student must develop and utilize critical thinking skills. Such critical thinking skills are in great demand in today's workforce. These are the higher level skills which are "out of the box" in nature. I expect this kind of mature thinking in the work that we do in my classroom. Each of us has some goal for our years in science. In order to balance the goals of the students, parents, administration, and the State, my overarching philosophy is to strengthen the student's technical / science skills. I want the students to be able to take on the challenge of the very technical world that they are going to inherit with a focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). I also want the students to become very strong thinkers and problem solvers.

Patience, communication, and fun activities have helped my students and me pinpoint where they are struggling and improve their understanding of difficult math, reading, and science topics. I have been a student a majority of my life and can relate to the struggle of trying to grasp complicated material and asking for help only to receive answers that seemed to raise more questions than answers. With these experiences I have learned about a variety of way of explaining, demonstrating, and practicing STEM subjects. I share with students my tips on organization, different study methods, and stress management that can be applied outside of the tutoring sessions and help them tackle hard topics.

My interest in teaching started when I was a teenager, when I was inspired by my wonderful high school biology teacher. Particularly, the class projects she used to illustrate concepts were inspiring, and got the entire class excited about the subject. This excitement about science lasted through my years studying undergraduate chemistry and biology, and into a master's degree in biotechnology. Most commonly, a science undergraduate pursues either graduate school, or some type of medical professional coursework, (doctors, nurses, or pharmacists). This was my original plan; to finish my undergraduate degree, and then go on to do a PhD. But after working as a teaching assistant during my master's degree, I realized how much I enjoyed working with my students and encouraging them to pursue and work hard in science.I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Maryland, College Park in biochemistry and cell biology in 2008. Immediately following this I started my Master's degree in Biotechnology at University of California, Irvine. The first year of my Master's mainly involved classroom instruction, as well as lab courses, during which my colleagues and I learned and practiced complex techniques required to conduct research. The second year of graduate school, I was able to pursue my own research and also work as a teaching assistant. I worked in Dr. Dana Aswad's biochemistry lab, analyzing and separating proteins from mouse brains. I also taught a discussion section in the introductory Genetics course. As a TA, my responsibilities were to review material covered in lecture, and hold one office hour every week for my students to come in and ask my assistance in understanding any of the difficult topics being covered in class. Because of how much I enjoyed teaching discussion, I went beyond what was expected of me, and extended my office hours, often conducting exam reviews. Sometimes there were students from other sections who would attend my office hour because of my accessibility as a teacher. This gave me immense satisfaction, and it became clear to me that a career as a high school teacher would be fitting for my personality and interests. As my master's program came to an end, I applied and received admission to a teacher credential program at UCI which I was planning to enter starting in the fall of 2010. It was during this time that I discovered I was pregnant. My husband was also a graduate student. Given this, and because of many other factors from childcare, to the desire to bond with my child I decided I needed to stay at home with my son, and put my career plans on hold.In 2011 spring I started tutoring, as it provided me with flexible hours, and enabled me to nurture my newborn. For 4 years I tutored chemistry, AP chemistry, Biology, Algebra, and some environmental science for high school students. Again I discovered the love I had for sparking scientific interest in a young student, and watching their faces light up as they understood a concept they had seen as difficult. Tutoring students was especially satisfying since I was able to cultivate a one-on-one rapport with the students, enabling me to cater my teaching to their needs. Some students were well prepared and knew exactly what they needed help with, while others needed me to comb through their notes and figure out what to cover during our sessions. Either way, I often succeeded in helping them improve in their grades and confidence in class. Tutoring has also helped me solidify my understanding of scientific concepts and has also enabled me to grasp the order of instruction chemistry, and biology at the high school level.I still plan to pursue a career in full time teaching, and attain my teacher credential. But for now, as I watch my own children grow up, tutoring is a wonderful way for me to do what I love and have the flexibility to be at home with my young children.

I graduated cum laude from the University of California, Irvine's school of Public Health Sciences in 2013. In addition to this, I was very involved around my college campus. I played five intramural sports, ran my own program in student government, which brought student teaching to UC Irvine, and served as president of my fraternity where I managed more than 60 members.I am a patient, kind-hearted, and intelligent person who truly values the importance of education in a young individual's life. I am currently applying to medical school and understand the plight of the modern student. I enjoy teaching and it gives me a lot of satisfaction to watch others learn and grow through their academics. I enjoy working with students of all ages from elementary to high school and even in some special cases, college sciences.During college, I tutored more than a dozen courses from start to finish. By using analogies, drawing diagrams, and asking the student questions, I was able to break through to students who were previously panicked about the possibility of failure. I believe in an "active" approach to tutoring which includes asking the student questions to not only get closer to a complicated answer, but to build the student's confidence. In addition, I always try to identify exactly where in the thinking process a student is struggling. After tackling this issue, I have been able to explain concepts and new ideas much more clearly and effectively.

As a graduate from UC Irvines Literary Journalism program, I have always been enthusiastic about sharing the most effective ways to write, read and communicate to the best of ones ability.Enjoying and succeeding in a literature class does not require having the right answers. Instead, I feel that its about having the tools needed to interpret the meaning behind novels, short stories, poetry, and other types of works. Its also about using those tools to draw ones own conclusions. In addition to having the right tools, I also believe that confidence is important to build in the classroom as well.During my junior and senior year of high school, I took International Baccalaureate classes in English. I sometimes struggled with writing essays and speaking up during class discussions. It was only until I sought a bit of extra help after school from my teachers and even classmates that I began to improve, which is why I see the value in spending personal time with students to help them reach their individual goals.I continued to challenge myself in English and literature-related classes in college. I took courses in writing, poetry, plays, and even journalism and film.I graduated from UC Irvine in 2014 having made the Deans Honor List.In addition to my passion for reading and writing, I also enjoy playing music, doing arts and crafts projects, and going to yoga.

As a young child, I was fascinated with dressing in elaborate costumes and using comical voices to pretend to be someone completely different and extraordinary. I remember begging my brother to play Knights or Cowboys and, while he reluctantly agreed to put on a costume and join me in my antics, we managed to create literally hours of fictional adventures that felt so real we would completely lose track of our time, wrapped in our own magical world. At the age of five, I had no idea that such behavior could lead to a rewarding life focus in education. So my passion for theatre began at an early agewhether it was the elementary school plays where I devoted hundreds of after-school hours to rehearsing and performing classic childrens fairy tale stories or the required classroom educational plays. In high school, I discovered theories and philosophies behind my work, methods with which I could experiment, strategies to try out, and ideas to consider and above all, ideas that I could eventually teach to students. After high school, I attended UC Irvines Claire Trevor School of the Arts, and I continued this education further, both onstage and in the classroom. I played with aspects of theatre to which I had never been previously exposed (such as absurdism and film acting) and recently developed my own methods and theories of acting, Bruce Lee-ing my technique by taking bits and pieces of the masters and combining them into a system that works for me. This is where I discovered my passion for teaching. Watching my teachers work in this environment I realized that so much of teaching is beginning the process. If you can start students, but let them continue on the path, you have done your job. You don't have to teach the "right method" or one that works every time--rather you should expose students to ideas and thoughts and let them choose what is most helpful to them. As a tutor, I have always striven to do only 20-40 percent of the talking in each session and let the students do the work, discovering their own ideas through minimal prompting from me.Teaching requires constant curiosity, exploration, and re-thinking, and I cannot wait to work with you. To me, all academics are a type of performance and I hope to help you craft your ideas into a more manageable structure that showcases exactly what you want to say. Your work should be the stage on which your ideas are performedId love to help you create and explore those thoughts and theories. Theres no one way to do it. There is only your way! I look forward to meeting you!

I am a math and science enthusiast. I love finding solutions to problems. In high school I was described as a nerd, not only because I graduated valedictorian of my senior class, but because I did all of my homework as well as extra problems. My love of math and science caused me to pursue a Civil Engineering degree at the University of California - Irvine. After graduating with my undergraduate degree in June 2014, I am now working on my graduate degree in the same field. My overall career goal is to work for a public agency that monitors and analyzes environmental hydrology and water resource models.I started tutoring math in high school. A family friend asked me to help her son, who was struggling with seizures and missing class a lot for doctors appointments, catch up with his Algebra 2 class. Once I started college, I got a job tutoring students primarily in Algebra, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus. I enjoy tutoring not only because I enjoy solving problems, but because I love seeing and hearing about my students success. My best day as a tutor was when one of my Pre-Calculus students told me that not only did he pass his final exam, but he moved up an entire letter grade in the class. I was so excited to hear this news because I knew that it meant that now he would be able to take AP Calculus which would, in turn, make him a more competitive candidate his dream aerospace engineering program. In my spare time, I enjoy reading. My favorite days are ones that are spent with a novel. My other hobbies include playing piano, photography, running, hiking, yoga, and travel.

I am a former English Teacher and I really enjoyed my time working with students. Although my career path has turned towards the Law, I still miss sharing my love of English literature and writing with others. As a former educator, I am deeply familiar with the many issues that students, Teachers, and schools face. When I student-taught at Edison High School, I learned the importance of not only appreciating each student's learning style, but the less salient aspects of his or her life which affected learning: their extracurricular activities, workload in other classes, and emotional, social, or psychological struggles. I held firm to my standards, as to what kind of commitment I expected from my students, and opened myself up as a resource to help them to fulfill those standards. My specialty has always been Reading, Writing, and Literature. Communication and analysis are the very core of what English classes are meant to teach. By using this as the framework for my lessons, I push my students towards mastery of the subject, rather than rote memorization of grammatical rules and literary devices.

I am a University of California, Irvine graduate and received a BS in mathematics from there. I also have a secondary math teaching credential from California State University, Fullerton and a Master of Arts in Teaching from National University. I have taught many levels of secondary math including 8th grade math, Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II. I have tutored these subjects as well as trigonometry, precalculus, and calculus. I love tutoring any subject in math, but Algebra II is my favorite because it was during this class in high school that I realized I loved math and wanted to major in it and teach it one day. I want to help students find the fun in math like I did in high school. I believe that all students are capable not only of learning math, but excelling in it. Because I get to know my students and their interests, they are very receptive to learning from me. Outside of math, I enjoying going for runs, going to ballet class, and spending time with my almost 2 year old daughter.

I just graduated from the University of California, Irvine with high honors in biological sciences. I am currently seeking admission into medical school. Meanwhile, I am doing what I enjoy doing the most, tutoring students and helping them through their academic struggles. I enjoy interacting with students and seeing them improve academically as it gives me a lot of self-satisfaction. I enjoy teaching chemistry, physics and mathematics the most.I have many teaching strategies that I tend to implement in my tutoring sessions, and they have proved effective during my teaching career. I choose to interact with the family of the student and continually update them on the status of their student, as I believe that the family plays a crucial role as well as the tutor himself. Also, I approach my students in a very friendly way to eliminate any discomfort or stress the student might have. Finally, I am looking forward to helping more students succeed in their academic endeavors.
