I am a graduate of Vassar College with a B.A. in Political Science. I put my Political Science education to use for more than a decade working in State and Local politics, first as a Communications Director for a New York State Senator and then as the Chief of Staff to the Putnam County Executive. I have also worked on many political campaigns for election and re-election. I decided to attend law school at night while working as Chief of Staff and I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Pace Law School. I completed a two-year term clerking for a Federal Judge and now I prosecute criminals with the Westchester District Attorney's Office. I have also taught Criminal Justice at the New Rochelle campus of Monroe College.I found that when I began teaching at Monroe College, an institution known for pulling most of its students from the poorest neighborhoods of the Bronx, that many of my students would have benefited tremendously from a one-on-one tutoring relationship. That is what has brought me to Varsity Tutors. I feel compelled to work with students who, for whatever reason whether it be their own personal learning style or the difficulties associated with classroom teaching, cannot get the help they need in the traditional classroom. I feel that I have an incredible understanding, being a classroom teacher, of exactly what students need but are unable to obtain from a lecture setting. I am excited to develop this personal relationship with students in a setting that will help them get as much out of their education as possible. Every student is an individual and every student has individual needs. I want to assess students based on this philosophy and tailor a curriculum that suits their learning abilities and strengths. I believe that everyone has the ability to learn, they just have to figure out their unique personal style that will enable them to do so.In my spare time, I am an avid football, baseball, and hockey fan. Since I am originally from Pittsburgh, PA, I follow the Steelers and Penguins religiously. In my younger life, I was a professional dancer, performing in musical theater productions that toured all over the United States, and I continue to work out at the gym every day. I also love to read and have three, yes THREE, dogs who make my life very hectic but fill my home with much love.

Hi, my name is Elle. I'm a recent graduate of Vassar College with my BA in English and Psychology, and I'm working to bridge the achievement and opportunity gap in the American education system. I believe all children deserve the opportunity to reach their full potential as students and I hope to help them do so through tutoring.
Hello! My name is Neha, and I am currently a college student studying neuroscience on the pre-med track. I have several years of tutoring experience dating back to high school, where I discovered my passion for helping students build confidence and achieve their academic goals. I used to tutor subjects such as math, science, and languages. I believe that every student is capable of success when given the right support, encouragement, and learning strategies. My goal is to create a positive and welcoming environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and growing from them. As a tutor, I strive to make learning engaging, personalized, and approachable. I understand that every student learns differently, so I plan to adapt my teaching style to fit each student's unique needs and strengths. Whether a student needs help understanding new concepts, completing homework assignments, preparing for exams, or improving study skills, I am committed to helping them succeed. I look forward to working with students and helping them develop the skills, confidence, and motivation needed to reach their full potential.
I am a 2005 graduate of Vassar College (Bachelor's) and 2009 graduate of Teachers College, Columbia University (Master's). I have taught English Language and Literature for five years in both NYC public schools and a private academy in New Jersey. As a tutor, I have worked with high school students in the Bronx and suburban New Jersey on reading and math skills. My passion for Literature arrived late; as the only child of a book publisher and librarian, I had to get my rebellion in somewhere. But ever since I was introduced to Kurt Vonnegut in college, reading has been an obsession. I've spent years trying to force this love into gum snapping high school students, and when I see that spark of awareness that some of us get from reading great books, it makes up for all the swings and misses on students who just want to get the grade and get out the door.Even if you think reading is something to do only when the power goes out, I can help you find something unique and yes, even interesting in your dreaded required Literature.
I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from The Ohio State University and a BA in English Literature from Vassar College. I am passionate about helping students improve their reading and writing skills, as well as their standardized testing techniques.
I am a soon to be graduate of a top liberal arts, having studied Biochemistry. I primarily tutor high school and college level math and sciences but also have extensive experience in all forms of engineering and higher mathematics. My current interest is in the application of Numerical Analysis into predicting high order polynomial expressions for physical phenomena as well as for data interpolation.
I'm passionate about student-centered learning and building student confidence. I enjoy using my Spanish skills to help others learn the beautiful language.
After completing a B.A. in Sociology at Vassar College, I completed a certificate of Medical Sciences (Post-Bach Pre-Med Program) at Drexel University. I took a year "off", working in a pathology/cardiology research laboratory at Johns Hopkins while applying to medical school. I was accepted to the M.D./Ph.D. program at Virginia Commonwealth University and that is where I have been for the past 9 years. This year (2016) I graduated with and MD and a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology. My dissertation project focused on mast cells in allergic disease, mastocytosis, and non-allergic diseases. Currently, I am in a research track program which combines an Internal Medicine residency with Rheumatology fellowship. All throughout my time in school, but particularly starting at Drexel, I have tutored other students in a variety of medically related areas. Most recently, I have tutored 1st and 2nd year medical students in a variety of medical school classes. I have also served on a wider level: participating on the curriculum planning committee and admission committee at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. I take great pleasure in advising and tutoring and love to see my former students move on to bigger and better things.
I am very excited to get to work! I'm fun and funny and am ready to teach!
I graduated from Vassar College with a B.A. in Philosophy, a field in which I'm now doing graduate work. I'm available as a tutor for English and History/Social Studies up through the high school level including coursework, Regents exams, and AP tests. I also tutor students in preparation for standardized tests including the SAT, ACT, SSAT, and PSAT. I am also experienced as a tutor or conversation partner for ESL learners and others working on improving their English language skills. I've tutored both small groups and individuals for four years, working with students across a range of ages from elementary through high school. Because of students' differing needs and interests, I always make a point of finding the approach that works with each person. I focus on first understanding why a student is having difficulty, rather than just drilling them. Sometimes this is a matter of the student's learning style, in which case I adapt my teaching style to that and help them develop studying habits suited to their way of learning. Sometimes it's a matter of having trouble with a particular concept, in which case I'll work with the student to rethink and re-articulate the problem in terms that will make more sense to them. In my free time, when I'm not reading or writing, I like to go running, practice the piano, and see my friends.
I am a rising senior at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. I am currently working towards my Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry, with minors in French and Francophone Studies and Violin Performance. I am a tutor for several levels of French and Chemistry. I love tutoring students because I find these subjects incredibly fulfilling and enriching to learn and I really enjoy helping others understand them on a deeper level.Outside of academics, I love playing the violin, singing with my a cappella group, and performing musical theatre. My current summer project is rereading the Harry Potter books.
I received my undergraduate degree from Vassar College in History with a minor in Education. I received my Master's degree from Fordham University in Adolescent Social Studies Education. I have worked in the New York school system for three years, both in the middle school and high school level. I have been tutoring since high school and particularly love tutoring students in Social Studies as well as Language Arts. I love tutoring Social Studies because when told, taught, and studied correctly, history can be the most thrilling story. I believe tutoring should be a rigorous but fun experience where both the tutor and student feel comfortable with each other. The first thing I do when I meet a new student is get to know their passions, interests, and experiences so I can make analogies to ideas and concepts they already know about. Part of prepping for standardized tests is feeling confident and building my students' confidence is something I constantly work towards. In my free time I am a sports maniac and play on multiple soccer teams. I love using athletics to describe key concepts such as comparing the Patriot's position during the Revolutionary War to home field advantage at a sporting event. When I am not on the field, I love to read historical fiction and political thrillers.
I am a PhD Candidate in History at the University of California, Berkeley but am currently living in New York while finishing my dissertation on the British Empire in India in the late 18th Century. I am originally from New York City and attended a very academically oriented private school, so I have first-hand experience with the stresses and concerns many students face, regardless of the school they attend. I benefited from private tuition myself and would like to consider my story a successful one, therefore I hope to carry on the benefits of tutoring to my own students.I have 7 years experience private tutoring a diverse range of subjects in New York and London, and 6 years experience as a teaching assistant of History and Italian at the University level. I've worked with a range of students from high-achieving undergraduates to students at pressure-cooker college preparatory schools to children with high-functioning Autism. My specialty subjects are History, English, Latin, essay-writing, exam preparation, and I have extensive experience preparing students for exam prep (PSAT, SAT, ACT, GRE to name a few) and university applications in the USA and the UK. I chose to go to graduate school and continue working in the field of education because I am passionate about both learning and teaching whether this takes place at home, in a classroom, or at an international conference.
I've worked as a tutor on/off for the past 15 years. I started my tutoring my mother's students while in elementary school and later worked as teacher's assistant in college and a tutor for an after- school program in Poughkeepsie. On the side, I've worked as a private tutor for undergraduate and graduate students since graduating from college. I love to teach and I hope to eventually become a professor! In my professional life I have worked as a Data Scientist and Data Analyst for the past six years. I use R, SQL, Python, Tableau, JavaScript visualizations, and Looker to build data pipelines and provide quantitative insights.
My name is Zoe Fullerton and I am current student at Harvard Medical School. I attended Vassar College as an undergraduate where I studied Science, Technology and Society. I am a patient teacher and eager to work with students of all ages.
I have a B.A. in English from Vassar College and an M.A. in Literature from NYU. My day job is at a big publishing house, and I really feel like I'm living the dream. Reading has always been a passion of mine, and I absolutely love working with books every day. I have worked as an editor, copywriter, and analyst, so I have a very practical understanding of the real-world benefits of reading and writing well. I love sharing my deep appreciation of literature and language with students. On the side, I am also a certified yoga instructor. I like to think that it keeps me flexible, both mentally and physically.I have experience tutoring students of all skill levels and ranging from 5th grade through college. My fields of expertise include test prep, writing, reading comprehension, French language, and grammar & mechanics. I think that every student benefits from a customized curriculum. Whether it is a problem of comprehension, poor time management, or just a lack of interest, I work with each student's particular challenges to help her/him perform as well as possible.
Hi my name is Lukas, a recent graduate from Vassar College. I have a BA in Drama as well as focuses in German, Creative Writing and Studio Art. Currently, I work as a personal assistant and find acting jobs on the side. My strengths lie in German, English, Theatre and Video Production.Being a tutor is so exciting for me. I have been working with people younger than me for a while and it has always been a rewarding and learning process for me and them.
Hello! My name is Nicholas, and I have a passion for education and learning. To me, education is not simply an act of personal betterment, but one of societal improvement and sustainability. Education, from science to math, english to history, allows us to have new lenses through which to see our world. Mastering content gives us a cognitive framework through which we can process and understand new information from the world around us. Knowledge is critical for one's own success in the world as well as a requisite for a well functioning democracy. If you do not have a fully formed internal logos, you are at the whim of others determinative narratives and little more than a passenger on your ship through life. My goal is enable individuals to be the captains of their own ship.
Hi there! My name is Bryan Kim-Butler, and I would love to work with you or your child on Varsity Tutors. I have over 7 years total of teaching experience, from the elementary school all the way through to the college level. I started way, way back, when I tutored elementary school kids when I was in high school, and that was around the year 2000. So that means I have been helping people younger than me educationally for over 25 years. My academic background is that I have a Master's in English literature, with a specialization in American literature, from the University of Michigan, a J.D. or a Juris Doctor, also known as a law degree, from Columbia University, and a bachelor's degree in Philosophy from Vassar College. So my areas of expertise are mainly in humanities: English, reading, writing, and social studies, including things like American history, law, and civics. My teaching is very student-centered and responsive to a student's own goals and their own needs. That's because I believe that even at a young age, children have their own ways of learning & their own priorities. It's just that adults often don't take the time to listen to them to figure out how best to help them. That's why I love getting to know the students I work with on a one-on-one level. My approach is not one-size-fits-all. I emphasize 3 things, okay? First, critical thinking, second, self-learning, meaning not depending on a teacher to tell you everything, and third, learning the practical steps anyone can take to improve from where they are. One thing I love about helping students and their families is seeing that spark of improvement, when someone who's been struggling realizes that what they need to do is not as hard as they thought, and that they really can do it. I've seen that spark in kids as young as 5 years old, and as old as college students ready to go off to law school, medical school, graduate school, and so on. So, I hope this video gives you a good idea of who I am as an educator, and I hope you're interested in working with me. Just let me know what you might be wondering about and how I might help. Thank you! Bye for now.
I am endlessly curious about people's varied and complex experiences, perspectives, and philosophies, and thus have spent a good part of my life in academia, earning a Bachelor's degree from Vassar College and Master's degrees from NYU and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.From 2015-2020, I was a teaching assistant for a range of courses spanning Comparative Literature, Communication Arts, Folklore Studies, and Beginning Russian. From my long-standing roles as both an instructor and a student, I know that teaching does not lie only in imparting specific knowledge. I help students succeed in their area of study by making sure they understand underlying methodologies and can build their skills through guided practice. Thus, they can carry what they learned beyond their short-term goals and truly get something lasting from my teaching. Likewise, I know that students' confidence and motivation makes a huge difference in the learning process; I care deeply about these factors and thus make sure to be a patient and supportive mentor, to engage students in their subject and encourage them throughout their progress.Being a teaching assistant was an amazing experience, but the most rewarding moments happened during my office hours when I could connect with students on a more personal level and together, work through their individual questions or concerns with the kind of depth and thoroughness that would not be viable in a time-restricted, twenty-five person class. Being there to celebrate a student's breakthroughs and seeing firsthand how far a student could come in a single semester showed me just how much difference these one-on-one sessions can make. I want to be the one to make it happen!I specialize in literature and writing about literature - how to engage with a text, how to analyze it, and how to formulate one's own original ideas into a convincing, compelling essay. Much of my work was with college freshmen, so I am especially aware of the difficulties commonly encountered at that stage as students must strive to meet new, more rigorous expectations; whether you are looking to do well in college or just want to impress your high school teachers, I can offer an insider's perspective on that important transitionary stage and help you level up!The subjects I most enjoy tutoring are creative writing and Russian language. Both are highly focused on students specific interests; thus students are invested in what they want to say and I can learn from them and about them. That makes it a wonderful, rewarding experience for us both.Creative Writing is something I consider to be mentoring rather than teaching, as it is the student who knows the most about the work they write - whether it's about the motivations of the characters, the particular associations and emotions that a line is intended to carry over, or anything else. Often, it takes questions to uncover these bits of secret knowledge, and the answers may not come right away. But when they finally do, it is such a privilege to be there as the short story or a poem takes shape, or falls into place, or suddenly develops a twist that even the student, the creative writer, did not expect! In the months before the pandemic, I've had the amazing opportunity to tutor creative writing at the 8th grade level, and will be happy to provide guidance to creative writers of any age!As for Russian, learning a foreign language is a gargantuan task if you want to do it well, but it's fascinating to think that so much of it can be defined with just an alphabet, a dictionary, and a list of grammar rules. Seeing these three elements come together into full-fledged ideas from students who had no knowledge of the language before is incredible - we can see just how far we can go with just a few basics of the language. Learning a foreign language is also a physical task insofar as one needs to produce the sounds well enough to be understood, or even to better pass for a native speaker. As a bilingual speaker of Russian and English, I am well positioned to understand the different nuances of each language's sounds and explain the mechanics of the pronunciation to enhance how good you sound. Language study allows an entire world of expression to open up before you. While the direction of study is always up to the student, I can make this especially rewarding by sharing music, movies, or stories so that you can explore the culture using the language skills you've gained.
I graduated from Vassar College with a Bachelor of Arts in Neuroscience. Since college, I have tutored elementary school students in Math and English; high school students in Chemistry and Physics with learning disabilities; and college students in Neuroscience. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about General Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Neuroscience. In my experience supporting struggling students, we always seem to have the most fun figuring out stoichiometry, metabolic reactions, neurotransmitters and more in prepping for college exams.I love the quote, "Amateurs can teach other amateurs." While I may teach you something, I firmly believe that you will teach me something too. Education brings me such joy and meaning to life as working through complex problems together remain memorable experiences. I aim to extend my appreciation for learning and growth to all my students.
I recently completed my Master's program at Columbia for the the teaching of Social Studies, so I have spent a year teaching in a classroom setting. Prior to that, I have tutored on a more informal level in different subjects. My most rewarding experience came when I volunteered in high school to work one-on-one with an autistic elementary school child who I taught how to play chess. He showed a real interest for the game, but no one in his family knew how to play. I went there once a week to play games with him and give instruction.I am dedicated to becoming an educator and tutoring offers a unique opportunity to reach students on a more personal level than they can typically be reached in large classroom settings. While I have nothing against the classroom, I look forward to every chance I have to make direct connections with students and to help them achieve their academic goals. I am a genuinely curious person, and I find every individual's story fascinating and worthy of my time. Tutoring affords me the opportunity to give them this time.In terms of what I like to tutor, I have always loved taking standardized tests, as I viewed them as fun exercises in spotting tricks. I excelled at the SAT, and I would love to impart my understanding of the exam onto students who approach it with trepidation. I can help with all three sections, and I know the dynamics of the test (what are the categories of questions, what are the typical multiple choice pitfalls, how people should pace themselves, etc.)With regard to specific subjects, I initially began college as a Math major before switching to Political Science. I got all the way to Modern Algebra (group theory) before making the change, so I feel pretty comfortable with high school level Math. From years of experience in this field, I understand that Math is a participatory sport that people learn by lots of doing. I can help you or your child build the skills and experience needed to master this subject. Also, I love chess. Love it. I used to be nationally ranked, and I still play online in my free time. It is a great way to keep your mind active while having fun. I would be happy to play any student of mine if they are interested in this as well.
I received a Bachelor of Arts in Italian from Vassar College and spent one of my undergraduate years studying in Italy with a program sponsored by Smith College. After graduation from college, I spent several years working for a small office in Italy where I used both English and Italian daily. After returning to the States, I received a Master's in Education from New York University with specialization teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. Subsequently, I taught English in a variety of community-based organizations and at the university level as well. Most of my teaching experience has been with young adults in both domestic and international locations, but I have also worked with children learning English. I look forward to opportunities to spend some additional time with younger learners as they do not have as much interference from their first languages, and their youth allows them to absorb new words and linguistic structures more easily. In addition to many years teaching, I have also had significant roles administering ESL programs and working in higher education administration (the fiscal and HR areas as well as student support services) at Boston University where I also earned an MBA.Teaching students how to express themselves in writing and learning to overcome the challenges of English grammar and spelling is the area of ESL coaching that I most enjoy. Helping break down the hurdles that exist in mastering a new language so that it becomes more manageable and engaging for them to use has always yielded much satisfaction. I work hard with students to help them generate their own words and ideas in English so that their thought processes can begin to flow naturally in the new language - in addition to what they say or put on paper. In terms of what I enjoy outside the classroom (my hobbies and interests), there are a variety of activities that I can name at the top of the list. These include travel (especially to places near the sea), music, as well as going to movies and the theater. I also enjoy finding time to direct toward the maintenance of my own fluency in a second language!
I'm currently a rising sophomore at Vassar College, who is interested in tutoring SAT, History, English, and Algebra. Languages that I can speak are English, German, and Chinese. Hoping to engage with a range of students, and to do my best to help them with their work!
As a tutor, I aim to make learning exciting and relevant to children. One of the greatest challenges facing young students is that information is presented to them in a stale, inaccessible way. Specifically in the context of standardized testing, they are asked to memorize and regurgitate information without truly grasping its content; such a style makes it impossible for students to approach unfamiliar problems and think critically, and often contributes to their discouragement and their writing off of entire subjects like math and science. I attempt to give students the ability to think critically, relish the problem solving process, and come to solutions on their own. To this end, I attempt to speak clearly and concisely, to make high-level concepts accessible to students of all ability levels, and to create strong personal relationships with my students. I am currently accepting students in all math subjects through the high school level, standardized test preparation (SAT, GRE, SSAT, PSAT), computer science, writing, study skills and organizational skills.I recently graduated from Vassar College in New York where I majored in computer science with minors in math and art history. I strongly believe in holistic approaches to education, and as a computer science at a liberal arts college, I had invaluable experience studying both math and science while continuing to develop my critical writing, reading and research abilities. At Vassar, I was deeply involved in the computer science department as a tutor and lab coach for several years and as the department-wide academic intern. In these roles, I worked with students of all levels in the department to complete their homework and lab assignments and to study for tests, and held open review sessions and recitation classes for our 100 and 200 level courses. Additionally, I have worked as a middle school tutor and test prep coach and feel very comfortable working with students of all ages and skill levels.
I recently graduated from Vassar College with a BA in music and piano performance. I also studied math extensively while there, and am familiar in everything from Algebra to Differential Equations and Linear Algebra. I worked as a tutor for music theory classes in Vassar's music department, and am fascinated by the marriage of music and mathematics. I am incredibly patient, and can adapt to any learning style. My energy as both a teacher and learner is infectious, and I try to convey that passion for learning to all of my students. In addition to my math and music skills, I can speak, read, and write proficiently in Spanish. I am also a classically trained pianist, performing all over New York City, and teach piano in addition to tutoring.
Teaching is my fourth career. I've learned my way through the first three by watching others and choosing how to adapt and apply their techniques to the specific purpose of my projects. In high school I was a STEM student before the term existed, but I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Vassar College with a major in Drama and a double minor in English and Art.Starting out on my career path in New York City, I took and taught theater crafts and began to develop prototype design skills while working in live theater, opera, dance, and television/video, and after contributing to Sesame Street, The Muppet Show, and The Muppet Movie, relocated to London through the Jim Henson companies to work on feature films such as Dark Crystal, Dreamchild, Labyrinth, and Little Shop of Horrors. After a time, being at the intersection of a script and its visualization excited me the most and led me to emulate my colleagues who were into concept creation by beginning to research and write story treatments for Labyrinth.Returning to the States to raise a family, I applied what I'd learned about production to the corporate world. My experience and imagination yoked to a client's vision and purpose allowed me to take on a variety of roles: creative director, writer, producer, graphic designer, and occasional project management. As in the past, I often worked in the trenches, this time learning the software that supported and enhanced our efforts. But overall, my focus was to communicate, through language and visual representation, how a project could be realized. I knew that the plan might grow and change as it progressed, so had to be mindful that collaboration, communication, and flexibility were key to adapting to change as we moved toward the client's goal.Although I returned to college and earned a Master's in English and a Certificate in Creative Writing, my progress in the real world still relies on both words and pictures. The more we engage our senses, the deeper will be our ability to convey our intentions to those with whom we live, work, and play. Therefore, I wish to find out how you learn best so that together we may craft a plan for your progress, whatever your goal. Please share your expectations and concerns. Your goal may seem hazy at the start, but as learning is about observing, trying, and sometimes failing, your vision will come into focus. We can course correct as we move forward together to ensure a resolution, even if the destination changes somewhat. That's life, isn't it?
I take a fun, interactive, Socratic approach to teaching students of all ages that stresses interaction and creativity. I look forward to collaborating with you!
I thrive in tutoring humanities - English literature, Latin, art history, music (keyboard, music theory and music history), philosophy and history. I am liberal arts trained and excel at connecting concepts across academic disciplines.
I am currently a 3rd year doctoral candidate at the University of Oxford. I previously attended the Yale School of Public Health and earned a Master of Public Health in Health Policy with a concentration in Global Health. I also hold two Bachelors degrees - a B.A. in political science and a B.A. in biology - from Vassar College. I have been a tutor for twelve years and enjoy teaching very much. I have taught both graduate and undergraduate level courses at Yale as well as multiple courses at Oxford. Some of my favorite activities include traveling, dancing (classical ballet, pointe), and playing baseball.
Hello! My name is Izzy, I'm 23 years old, and I'm originally from Danville, Indiana. I got my bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from Vassar College in Spring 2018. I'm currently in graduate school to become a pharmacist - I'm in my first year of the PharmD program at Northeastern University. As you can probably guess, my area of expertise is the sciences - specifically Biology and Chemistry. However, I am also able to teach other subjects such as math through high school levels, and standardized test prep (SAT, ACT, PCAT, etc).I have been tutoring with Varsity Tutors since June 2018. While in undergrad, I was a college-level General and Organic Chemistry tutor, as well as a Chemistry laboratory instructor. Before college, I was a private nanny and homeschooling educator for an eleven-year-old student.I am happy to work with students of all ages, but I believe my skill set and experience are better suited to slightly older students (middle/high school and college).I look forward to hearing from you!
I am a recent Vassar College graduate. I majored in Biology and have a minor in Hispanic Studies. I have a lot of informal tutoring experience. I always enjoyed helping out fellow classmates through the years and helping my younger siblings. During my last year in college, I also tutored basic Biology at the local high school. I tutor high school math up until precalculus, (Algebra I and II, pre-calc) basic-to intermediate Spanish (Spanish I-IV), some basic conversational Spanish and Biology. When I tutor, I aim to help the student understand the material and not just the answers.
Hi my name is Grace, I'm a sophomore in Vassar college right now. I'm currently a psych major with an English minor as well as premed. I've been tutoring since my second year of high school and enjoy it immensely. I've tutored kids from elementary school all the way to high school. The subject I'm particularly confident in are English/Reading, but I also enjoy SAT and ACT math, psychology, and biology!
As a junior at Vassar College majoring in Psychology on a premedical track, I am passionate about making complex scientific concepts accessible and engaging for my students. With tutoring experience in subjects like AP Biology, AP Psychology, and Organic Chemistry, I employ unconventional teaching methods that not only clarify difficult material but also foster a genuine love for learning. My goal is to create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and exploring ideas. I believe that education should be enjoyable and inspiring, and I take pride in tailoring my approach to meet the unique needs of each student. Outside of academics, I enjoy reading and exploring new ideas, which further enriches my tutoring practice.
I am a graduate of Vassar College and Trinity College Dublin, where I received my Ph.D. from the School of English in July of 2013. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, my passion is teaching writing. Working alongside Ireland's great poets and playwrights has taught me that good writing should spark the imagination as well as stand up to careful criticism. I love and understand the shape of the English language, from the components of a well-constructed sentence, to the structure of a paragraph, to the discursive crescendo of a well-written essay, and I convey these concepts to my students with passion and humor. My favorite aspect of tutoring is re-discovering the course content through my students. I believe that each student brings unique talents and perspectives to the material, and I enjoy finding ways to help them connect with the topics at hand.
A life-long lover of books and language, I am passionate about learning, the arts, traveling, telling stories, and sharing experiences. I have a B.A. in Drama and Italian from Vassar College, where I graduated with general and departmental honors. As a Drama major, I focused on directing and dabbled in writing, performing, and costuming as well. As an Italian major, I spent a semester studying at the University of Bologna, completed a translation for my thesis, and worked as a drill instructor for first-year students. After graduating I was awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in Catania, Sicily, where I spent a year teaching high school students English language, culture, literature, and theatre. In my spare time, I acted in an Italian version of As You Like It, did a weekly guest spot on a radio station, tutored privately, and started an after school theatre program culminating in an end-of-year performance in English. In addition to tutoring, I currently devote my professional time and energy to theatre directing and producing. I am fascinated by the ways in which the arts can impact and enrich society in ways both big and small, and using this understanding to develop a culture of creativity and community. As a tutor, I find that empathy, a sense of humor, and flexibility are invaluable in helping others gain academic success and personal confidence. Working as a director has taught me that careful listening and guided collaboration are critical to both problem solving and teaching--and of course, that there is no greater teacher than trial and error! I love finding ways to help others make connections, develop strategies, and answer questions. A naturally curious spirit, I find that learning what makes people tick and how we can use it to resolve problems is a ongoing challenge and tireless adventure.I'm an avid (albeit still amateur) runner, sometime yogi, and constant consumer-participant in the cultural life of New York City. In the short term, I aspire to finally have enough shelving to keep my books off the floor and an urban herb garden that makes it through the winter.
I'm an Economics major at Vassar College who has tutored peers and children for four years, and have learned as much from teaching as those I've taught. In my experience it is easiest for a student to learn when their teacher engages with them directly and adapts their way of teaching to the learning style and interests of the student. This has always been how I have learned most effectively as a student, and is how I attempt to instill knowledge as a teacher.
I graduated from Vassar College in 2016 with a BA in English. I am passionate about literature and writing and want to help make these subjects come alive for students. I want to teach students how to eventually teach themselves so that they may excel at a particular subject in the future. I would love to read students' essays, help students through difficult readings, and with reading comprehension. I am patient and there for the students' needs.
I am a Vassar and Dartmouth educated woman with a passion for learning and for making learning fun. I believe in not only helping a student with the assignment at hand, but rather to teach and enforce tools and skills that will help each student for a lifetime. I also believe in customizing my lesson plans to each student rather than emphasizing a "one style fits all" approach. I am positive, energetic, and thrive on helping others succeed and reach their goals.
