I am a graduate of Ithaca College with a B.A. in Spanish. During college I had the opportunity to study for 5 months in Costa Rica. After College I continued to travel - which I love - to Seville, Spain where I taught High School English and tutored English language to Spanish students. Since returning to the United States I have tutored New York City Public School students in a variety of subjects including English and Spanish in an AVID program in High School. Currently I am a High School teacher at Danvers High School. I have been teaching High School Spanish for 5 years including a year in the New York City Public Schools in Bronx, New York. Teaching Spanish is my passion; I love the language and I am committed to sharing the joy of learning a world language with my students. I am confident in tutoring and teaching all levels of Spanish and working with students of varied learning styles and interests. In addition to teaching Spanish content to my students, I also work to mentor and teach good study habits and learning skills in order to give students the tools they need to continue to be successful in their studies. In my spare time I enjoy a variety of hobbies including surfing in all four seasons, indoor rock climbing, and spending time outdoors with my wife and our dog.

I've been tutoring math at the college level for over five years, working with students of all different backgrounds and ability levels. I have experience with the special education population, and I am comfortable working through the needs of students with disabilities, learning or otherwise. I pride myself on my ability to tailor lessons to particular students, finding the pedagogical methods that work best for the individual.I'm a transplanted New Yorker living in Oregon while finishing graduate school. I was a special education student in a Montessori school until middle school, then "mainstreamed" by the beginning of high school. I attended Ithaca College, a small private college, for undergrad, and Oregon State, a large public university, for my graduate work. Taken together, this has given me a healthy appreciation for the variety of student experiences in the education system. I feel that tutoring can address some of the difficulty that arises when a student's needs are not being met by their particular school. My spare time is devoted mostly to writing. Though my background and formal education is in mathematics, I come from a family of writers and musicians. I love language, its history, structure, and evolution, possibly because of this upbringing. I am also hoping to transition to tutoring more in this area (i.e. GRE Verbal, writing, etc.).
I love working with kids and I really enjoy helping someone to understand something in a new manner. I think that learning some of the subjects can be boring but I know how to liven the material up in a manner that is relatable/ easier to understand. I have been a camp counselor in the past so I have some experience working with kids; I am very patient and I was always someone in school that could turn a long tedious problem/ information into something that I remembered forever.
I hold a Master of Education in Secondary English and Social Studies from the University of Pennsylvania. I also hold Pennsylvania Certification in Secondary English and Social Studies.I began teaching high school English at Philadelphia's Simon Gratz High School and Cherry Hill (New Jersey) High School East. After a lengthy career in marketing and advertising, I returned to teaching at several of Philadelphia's magnet schools, including Franklin Learning Center, Lankanau High School and William Bodine High School for International Affairs. While at Bodine, I developed the curriculum for and taught the SAT Prep course. That year, the school achieved the highest scores on the PSSA English test in the its history. During my career I have taught English, Creative Writing, African American Literature, Filmmaking, Introduction to Communications, Journalism, World History, American History and African American History.
I have a Masters degree in Early Childhood Special Education (birth to Grade 3) from Hunter College. I have been teaching students with a wide range of needs and abilities for the past four years. I am currently a special education teacher in a NYCDOE District 75 school. I have the most experience working with students who need support in elementary reading and math. I am also bilingual in French and English and can tutor students in French.I consider myself to be a hard-working, caring, and creative individual that is passionate about providing my students with a successful educational experience. I especially enjoy tutoring because I am able to give the student the individualized attention they deserve and figure out both how they learn and how to support them in their learning!
I am fascinated by language, by both the intricacies of its structure and by the awesome array of possibilities it can unleash when masterfully used. Give me a piece of writing, whether highly technical or enchantingly lyrical, and I will immerse myself in it and then quickly become “fluent” in its particular style.Just last year I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Ithaca College with a degree in English Literature as well as a minor in Integrated Marketing Communications. At Ithaca, I was a proud member of the Sigma Tau Delta English National Honor Society as well as the interdisciplinary National Honor Society Phi Kappa Phi. Next fall, I will be beginning a PhD program in English Literature at Brown University in order to pursue my dream of becoming a college professor. Outside of the classroom, I am passionate about music, movies, Spanish and traveling. As a teacher, I strive to cultivate an organic interest in my subject matter while simultaneously developing a thorough knowledge of the technical aspects of that field. I do this by encouraging independent thinking in my students while guiding them through the sometimes thorny thickets of more structural aspects of our work such as grammar, punctuation, or source citations. It is my hope that my students will come away from my lessons not only prepared to succeed in their examinations and compositions, but also with a bourgeoning interest in these fields themselves.
I graduated from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music (B.M.) and from Ithaca College (M.M.). At Oberlin, I studied trumpet performance and Eurhythmics, which is a fancy name for a unique pedagogical approach that uses movement to teach music. At Ithaca College, I studied to be a conductor, the musical kind (of course). So, why is someone with two degrees in music tutoring Reading and Writing? Writing has always been an essential arrow in my quiver of skills, so to speak. I wrote the program notes for the orchestra concerts during my time at Ithaca College and all my graduate coursework required a high level of writing. But the real reason I am a Writing tutor is that I love to write. Furthermore, I love to edit (strange, I know). I enjoy looking through an essay, tweaking words and sentences here and there to get the essay just right. There is something incredibly satisfying about constructing an expressive, potent piece of writing. When I am not writing, teaching music, or spending time with my lovely wife, I enjoy tinkering with my home espresso machine. I never used to be much of a coffee drinker until I bought my wife a semi-automatic espresso machine for her birthday. It quickly became much more mine than hers but as long as she gets the cappuccinos that result, she is fine with that. Understand, this is not the kind of machine that you just push a button and out comes a latte. It is the kind that specialty coffee shops use which require a bit of skill and finesse from the barista. I love experimenting with all the variables of making a great espresso including the dose amount, how fine to do the grind, how hard to tamp down the espresso, etc. The result? Delicious cappuccinos, right in my own home!
I was motivated to become a tutor because I wanted a job doing the things that I love: learning new topics and helping others. My goal is to not only have students successfully learn information, but additionally, I want them to feel confident about their work.I have been a tutor for four years now. I began tutoring middle school math my freshman year of high school, and later I tutored Regents Earth Science through National Honors Society in my senior year. I am now a freshman at Ithaca College, majoring in Biology, minoring in Anthropology, and pursuing a career in medicine. Apart from education, I am also interested in art and music, and I participate in club soccer and varsity crew at Ithaca College. As a Varsity Tutor, I hope to show my students how enjoyable learning really is. I hope that you will learn from me, as I know I'll continue to learn from you!
I've long been drawn towards education, and it's given me many years of experience teaching and tutoring. I love learning, and I hope to encourage this passion in others too. I believe it's important to make lessons interesting and engaging! I graduated from Ithaca College with degrees in English Literature and Spanish, and went on to teach English abroad in South America: first in Colombia, then in Brazil through a Fulbright grant. Literature, foreign languages, and social studies are my specialties, but I'm comfortable in all subject areas. I'm an encouraging and warm presence in the classroom, and get to know the needs of the students I work with so that we can strive to meet their goals together. Outside the classroom I read and write, practice yoga and pottery, and love being with friends and family. I hope to have the chance to work with you!
Current second year law student in the NYC-Metropolitan area with a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology, English Literature & Legal Studies. I'm passionate about various genres of literature (American Lit, Shakespeare, 18th Century) and would love to assist in any college admissions essays or academic writing to further the future education of my students.
I am currently a student at Ithaca College pursuing a degree in physics. I am very passionate about math and science especially, and I have found that teaching students is another passion. I have experience tutoring high school students in areas including algebra, algebra 2 and AP Physics 1. I love working with students to help them achieve their goals, and finding exactly what teaching style works best for which students.
I received my Bachelor of Music degree from Ithaca College and my Master of Music degree from Webster University in St. Louis, MO. Both degrees were in Trombone Performance, though I had a strong Music Education foundation at Ithaca. I worked as a band director in New Jersey public schools for 25 years, teaching general music to grades 2-6, elementary band, middle school band, and middle and high school music technology. I've also taught privately for over 30 years, teaching all levels and specializing in low brass and jazz improvisation. As a trombonist, I performed, toured and recorded with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and was a featured soloist with the Jordan Thomas Orchestra at the NJ JazzFest in Madison, NJ. I have played in Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Hollywood Bowl, Tanglewood, and Birdland jazz club in NYC. I feel that performing professionally makes me a better teacher, and being a professional educator helps my playing. I am also the founder, leader, trombonist, and chief arranger and composer for the ACME BRASS CO., an eight-piece brass with rhythm section group, producing ACME BRASS's first CD, entitled "X-MAS X-ING." My specialty area with Varsity Tutors is music. Music has special powers to stimulate creativity, advance learning ability and create a sense of community. I feel as music teacher, I can facilitate all aspects of learning through the use of music, as well as learning about music. In my work as a teacher, I have come to see my role as providing a warm, supportive, positive environment in which students can feel empowered to experiment and learn. My job is to meet the students where they are, assess their present level of ability as well as their motivation and capacity to improve, and help them design a plan for learning and improving. Each lesson or meeting is like a consultation where the student shows me what he or she has worked on, we discuss how to set and achieve the next goal and adjust any methods being used. The next week, we again evaluate and adjust. This is all done within the framework of clear expectations and standards. Often, I say that my job is to teach students how to teach themselves. That is, in a lesson I give students several things: the tools to use while practicing or studying, the ability to develop and use their own practice tools, and the motivation to continue by providing an example of the desired goal. This is my favorite kind of teaching or tutoring; watching a student have a "light-bulb" moment when they firmly grasp a new concept, show mastery of a recently-acquired skill, make a connection to their life or some previous learning, or clarify their learning style to feel their forward momentum.
I am a Doctorate prepared licensed physical therapist with 40+ years of experience. I specialize in Orthopedic Physical Therapy. I am an assistant professor at Nova Southeastern University with experience in providing distance online instruction and have developed webinar presentations for various orthopedic dysfunctions as a speaker for several national CEU providers. As a professor in the Health Science department for Nova Southeastern University I provide instruction in Anatomy, Biomechanics, Kinesiology, and neuroanatomy. I have worked with many students in person and in group sessions to help them find ways to become more proficient in their learning and understanding of these difficult subjects. I am also a strong proponent of improving test taking strategies for students.
I graduated from Ithaca College with a degree in music education. After graduating I worked with a nonprofit organization called City Year where I worked as a tutor, mentor, and role model. Our mission was to work with students and create individualized curriculum to fill skill gaps and make sure students had the opportunity to be successful. I believe in putting in the extra time to make sure that I teach toward each student’s learning style. I understand that all students learn at different paces in different ways and make sure that each student is getting their best education. One-on-one tutoring situations are ideal for making sure that’s possible. I am patient, inquisitive, enthusiastic, and look forward to helping you reach your goals.
I am a graduate of Ithaca College with a B.A. in Spanish. Since graduation, I have taught English in Alcazar de San Juan and Madrid, Spain for four years. There, I taught adults, primary school aged students and adolescents. I am really fond of learning languages and I am most passionate about tutoring Spanish and ESL. I enjoy preparing creative lesson plans, teaching the Jolly phonics phonetic system to primary school students, evaluating and assessing students' progress and preparing students for the Trinity, Starters, Movers, Flyers, KET and First Certificate Cambridge exams. As a native English speaker, I know exactly how I would like to be taught Spanish and design a variety of activities based on what the student desires. I am a firm believer in education and enjoy sharing this appreciation with others. I am accustomed to working with people from many different backgrounds and eagerly modify my teaching to meet the need of each individual. In my spare time, I enjoy going to the cinema, singing, acting, reading and learning languages.
Have you ever sat in front of your homework and had no idea where to begin? I have, and it was no fun. That is until I got a tutor to guide me, then I started making steps in the right direction. I would love to be that tutor that helps you get to the next level.I have 4 years of classroom teaching experience, and have loved every minute of it. I find it rewarding to see students learning concepts they once found challenging. That is why proper scaffolding questions and consistent prompts are two tools in my toolbox I use to help students achieve long lasting results.
I am currently a Clinical Health Studies major in the Physical Therapy program at Ithaca College. I am minoring in Neuroscience, Biology, and Deaf Studies. I love animals, art, dance, music, and science.
Every student should have the opportunity to feel successful. As a tutor and teacher, I work to help students be active, rather than passive, learners. I believe that my job isn't only to teach students academic content, but also to help them develop skills to set goals and gain autonomy over their own education. When working in schools, collaboration with colleagues is central to my practice; when tutoring, this means being open to feedback from my students and their families so we can work together to best support the student's growth. This allows me to become self-reflective about my own practice, and match my tutoring style so it best meets the needs of each unique student.
After studying French in school and obtaining a Bachelors from Ithaca College, I worked in France teaching English as a second language to French high school students for an academic year. While in college, I tutored students in French and Spanish and taught French 101 classes to beginning French students. I have worked both in small groups with multiple lessons and one-on-one. I enjoy working one-on-one because it allows for the most progress to be made. When I am working with students, I like to keep it relevant for them - particularly when it comes to languages. I do this by talking with them about what their endgame might be for the skill and find out how being able to communicate in the target language (for example) will help them in their lives. Additionally, I use subject matter that relates to the student's interests, when possible. For example, when I was teaching in France, I brought in Beatles songs to study, so we could connect and also learn about the context of the song and have a real discussion about it. We can use the student's interest to connect to the content. Because the goal of languages is to be able to communicate, express oneself and understand messages (i.e. reading content), using material that relates to the student's interests and goals will help this idea make sense to the student. I have lived and worked abroad and have traveled considerably. I also have another bachelors in Photography and a minor in Journalism. I work as a professional photographer, producing images for advertising and editorial uses. I love to dance and still tap dance.
Hello! I'm Erika, a recent graduate with an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Alabama. I also have a Bachelors in Writing from Ithaca College. Most recently, I worked for 3 years instructing undergraduates at UA in English 101, English 103 & Intro to Creative Writing. I also have experience tutoring at the Writing Center, working with students on personal statements, research papers, and more, and tutoring student athletes. I have experience teaching creative writing to all ages, from kindergarteners to adults, through educational nonprofits such as Writopia Lab and the Leadership Program. I love teaching writing because I love seeing students become more confident and able to express themselves, empowering them to lean into their individual voice and perspective. I value meeting each student where they are at and adjusting my tutoring style to meet each student's individual needs. I balance big-picture ideas with more detailed line edits for grammar and flow in my feedback, centering the student's primary concerns and the requirements of their assignment.
