I am a graduate of Lamar University. I received my Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. I also received a Master of Business Administration from the University of Southern California. I worked eleven years in corporate business as a chemical engineer, until I chose to leave to pursue my passion which is education. For the last thirteen years, I have been teaching developmental math classes at the community college level. In addition, I have been tutoring students of all ages and levels.I enjoy tutoring students, because you get to experience that light bulb moment with them. They realize that things aren't as complex as they were originally thinking. I emphasize showing the rules of math. So often students get confused on certain concepts because they have learned some type of shortcut in the past, which does not apply with all cases. However, if the students just know the rules, they can apply their knowledge with any given problem. The rules will never change; the only thing that changes are the numbers. My tutoring work also helps me be a better classroom teacher, because by working one-on-one you learn where the misunderstandings may be with a particular concept.

I received my Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies from The University of North Texas. Once I graduated, I quickly landed my dream position as a second grade math and science teacher. I then transferred to a school closer to home, to teach 4th grade. I quickly fell in love with teaching older students my favorite subject, math! After four years with 4th grade, I was moved to 5th grade math and social studies. I soon realized I loved the conversations that my classes and I would have when reading articles or learning about the American Revolution. After one year in 5th grade, I decided to go back to school to obtain my Masters in School Counseling from Lamar University. My ten years in teaching have taught me alot, but the most important is that every child learns differently. It is not always easy, but when I can figure out how to adapt to each students needs it is truly rewarding to see how excited they are when they understand new concepts.

I have a BS degree from Texas Women's University in Kinesiology/Math specialized in coaching. I also have a MEd degree from Lamar University. My career consisted of 30 years teaching middle and high school math classes, serving as the high school testing coordinator and middle school assistant principal. Several years were spent coaching girls sports at the middle school and high school level. During this time I have taught all levels of math classes as well as all levels of students. I understand students learn from different types of instruction, different types of environments and sometimes lots of patience. As an educator I have taught other topics besides math. I always build on what the student already knows about the topic. If very little is known, then we explore and create a base of knowledge.

There are many wonderful views and thoughts on the benefits of education that spark inspiration and motivation. At this moment, the one I would like to share with you is from the late, critically acclaimed filmmaker Stanley Kubrick: "I think the big mistake in schools is trying to teach anything by using fear as the basic motivation. Fear of getting failing grades, fear of not staying with your class, etc. Interest can produce learning on a scale compared to fear as a nuclear explosion to a firecracker." As a proponent of formal and lifelong education, self-discovery, and self-expression, I believe in the exchange of ideas and evaluation of information to successfully choose one's path moving forward. Ignorance and misinformation get us nowhere and only hinder our progress and success. Perhaps the main reason I view education as a passport to personal success is that it allows people to find happiness and satisfaction within themselves instead of using external metrics to measure their accomplishments. This allows people to build confidence within themselves and chase their dreams and unleash their passions. With a background in journalism and education, I obtained degrees from Howard University in Washington, DC (Journalism) and Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas (Educational Technology Leadership). Since 2005, I have taught a variety of subjects at the middle school, high school, and college levels including English, Language Arts, Writing, English as a Second Language, and First-Year Experience: Education 1300. In addition, I have worked as an online editor and freelance writer, so I enjoy teaching anything that involves reading and writing. I have also passed TExES teacher certification in the state of Texas. Another aspect of teaching that I enjoy is meeting a variety of people, as diversity is important, and creating relationships by identifying what we have in common. I want to transform people's negative experiences with education by meeting them where they are and helping them chart a personal path to attain their goals and dreams. And when I'm not involved in education, you can find me making music, watching Netflix or Disney+, or plotting my next trip to an unknown destination. If you have ever viewed education as a "punitive" or "hurtful" process, I'd like to change that. Feel free to drop me a message or jump right in and give me a try. Looking forward to meeting and working with you.

I am still a student myself as I am wrapping up my M.Ed. degree in Counseling and Human Development at Lamar University. My graduation will be in December of this year. I really enjoy telling the stories that can be found in history, and I am so intrigued with how the mind works. My teaching and learning philosophy is that anyone can learn anything. As a teacher with 10 years of experience, I am excited about the opportunity to apply my skills and experience here at Varsity Tutors. In addition to my Masters in Education, I have found history, government and economics extremely exciting and linked together in many respects. I also have 3 years experience teaching history and government to high school students. What I have learned through that experience was that to get kids to understand and value historical events, I had to make these events come to life. I implemented unorthodox teaching strategies such as combining film, biographies and historical accounts together to make these events memorable for them. I am passionate about teaching and helping students come to love the act of learning and I would cherish the opportunity to transform the way your students view history, government and economics.
