My first experience in children's programming has been in summer camps as both a volunteer and official camp counselor. Since then, I have worked as a summer school teacher with the Boys and Girls Club of Columbus, Ohio, and most recently as an afterschool tutor at Raising Expectations in Atlanta, Georgia. I have always primarily worked with elementary-aged children, and occasionally middle school as well. While I can teach a wide variety of subjects, I am most passionate about English, History, and Spanish. It is my belief that the best way to get and maintain an engaged student is to impart a true love for learning. With younger children, I am a huge advocate for reading and reading comprehension. No toy was safe in my hands. As a child, I always took my toys apart to see their inner components and how they produced sound or light. Most survived the reassembly stage, while others were mourned by my mother's pocketbook. When I was in the fifth grade, my mother gave me my first toolkit. To say the least, I took apart everything in the house that could be disassembled with a screwdriver. Along with deconstructing anything that gained my interest, I also enjoyed crafting things.I associate these childhood curiosities with my current interests as I find myself wondering how natural phenomena occur and daydreaming about inventions. Studying the interactions between humans and technology have been in my interests for most of my high school and college career. My short-term goal is to explore different focuses so that I can develop an understanding of my personal interests in the field of physics. My long-term goal is to use my passion for sharing knowledge as an educator and to help others find what peaks their curiosities.

Through out my life I have come to understand that education is the gateway for opportunity, and I love working with students to help them expand their opportunities. Education has allowed me to live and travel all over the country and world. I attended Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia where I double majored in Economics and Political Science to earn my BA. Upon graduation from college, I joined Teach for America in New York City. I taught middle school math for 5 years - 3 years in the South Bronx and 2 years in East Harlem. In my first two years of teaching I earned a Masters of science in Teaching from Pace University. While teaching, I integrated music, technology, and cooking into the classroom to motivate and inspire my students to develop an understanding of, and passion for mathematics. While teaching, I also began a school store in both of my schools where I used the profits to help fund much needed resources for the schools. My philosophy for working with students is to make their experience, fun, engaging, and meaningful so that they may understand the importance of the concepts that they are learning. After teaching for 5 years I decided I wanted to make more of an impact within communities similar to the ones I worked with. Thus two years ago I returned home to Los Angeles to attend USC's Marshall school of Business. This past summer I graduated from USC with my Master of Business Administration. My favorite subject to tutor is math. Any kind of Math including elementary math, middle school math, and pre algebra. In addition, to loving mathematics, I love music and listen to all types of music. I find it super fun to develop songs around mathematical concepts. I like to work with music from a variety of artist including but not limited to Miley Cyrus, Adele, Beyonce, Ed Sheeran, and Nina Simone.

What's My Problem Have you ever asked yourself this question? If so, you're not alone! Many of us at some point have struggled in academic areas that seem impossible to master- I know, because I've been that student once. For this reason, I am motivated to teach and tutor students who struggle with the confidence of mastering their toughest subjects! With a Bachelors in Biology from Spelman College and a Masters in Medical Science from Indiana University School of Medicine, I know what it is like to spend countless hours studying and dissecting material, especially in the Biological Sciences! So, I have committed to doing it all over again... For you! I love teaching the Biological Sciences because it explains a lot of what happens on Earth, and even why we behave the way we do as humans. I love to incorporate exciting things such as animal models, YouTube videos and even dance moves-because I'm a dancer- into my lessons, to assist in understanding concepts. I've even traveled to Spanish speaking countries to understand the Latin culture and language to compliment my goal of becoming a bilingual physician. I believe that the best teacher is the best student, and because of that, I will forever position myself to learn.

I tutored several math and science classes while attending undergrad and worked as a Chemistry Teaching Assistant. I specialize in tutoring math courses leading up to Calculus II and many biological science courses. I believe every student can learn complex material, just sometimes needs it explained and broken down in a different way that meets the students need of understanding, which is where I come in to help. I oftentimes think differently due to having a scientific background. Therefore I have had to formulate different ways of viewing similar material which has equipped me with the ability to teach the same material in multiple ways with several teaching styles that is geared towards those I tutor.

As a New York City Educator, I strive to cultivate and establish an environment wherein each student can reach his or her highest academic potential. After being awarded a Bachelor's of Science, with Latin honors, in Biology at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, I continued my education Pace University's School of Education. After teaching in middle school science in Harlem, NY for two years, I graduated from Pace with my Masters of Science in Adolescent Education. Throughout college, I have tutored and mentored elementary school, middle school, high school, and college level students in various topics. These topics range from multiple biological disciplines, various concepts in mathematics, and English language arts skills. I am most passionate about middle- and elementary school-level mathematics, English language arts, and science because the concepts are dynamic and relational. The diversity of the material allows students to make meaningful connections to the content, cultivating long-lasting understandings of the material. While tutoring, I tend to follow an inquiry-based model wherein students are consistently questioned throughout the tutoring process. While providing the students with meaningful resources that are tailored to their specific needs and learning styles, I attempt to create connections between the content, process, and student. Because students tend to struggle in mathematics and science, I enjoy making these concepts transparent, fun, easy to understand and remember. When I am not teaching or tutoring, I enjoy coaching my middle school Step and Basketball Teams, in addition to taking these students on trips and retreats. With your child's specific learning needs as the foundation of my platform, I hope to establish a professional and meaningful environment conducive to your child's academic and social success.

Grade Level Lead and classroom management experience has helped me develop and execute school wide systems and routines. You can learn so much about a person by examining what he or she reads. My favorite book is entitled, "Mindset" by Carol S. Dweck and it is unequivocally phenomenal. In order to provide you with a brief synopsis, I will simply say that it addresses two different mindsets, one is a "fixed" mindset and the other is a "growth" mindset. As a tutor, I am a firm believer in the "growth" mindset because I know that a person can increase their achievement, in virtually any arena, if he or she decides to put more effort towards growth in that particular arena. As a tutor, I will encourage each and every student to carefully examine what he or she thinks and says in regards to his or her ability in that area. I will share stories of people who are famous for their accomplishments, not because they are exceptionally gifted, but because they chose to invest the time to work towards growth and excellence. That, I believe, makes success attainable for everyone.
