My name is Benaias and I am a Neuroscience alumnus at Amherst College. I am interested in anything related to the brain. I am very passionate about math, learning and becoming a Neurosurgeon.

Hello! My name is Edwige Ghembesalu, and I am a Pre-Med Psychology major at Amherst College. I am originally from Cameroon, but I've lived in the States for most of my life. I love tutoring/teaching, and I'm so excited to work with all of you!
I am passionate about tutoring students because I genuinely enjoy the process of learning and believe that tutoring is collaborative and a learning experience for both the tutor and the student. I love working with others and collaborating to reach a shared goal. I am currently a first-year at Amherst College (prospective majors include neuroscience, math, music) and tutor math and music with Varsity Tutors.
I have 6 years of classroom teaching and 10 years of tutoring experience, including more than 2500 hours of private and small-group instruction. I have taught classes from 6th grade to university and tutored from age 11 to adult.I have an undergraduate degree in English from Amherst College, and a Master's degree in Geosciences from the #1 graduate program in the country. I scored in the 99th percentile in the SAT and GRE, and previously worked for private test prep companies as a tutor, teacher and essay grader. My teaching style is encouraging, clear, fun, and flexible. I love figuring out how to customize a lesson in order to best cater to an individual student's needs. I can work with classroom teachers to come up with a plan to help you or your child through the semester. I also love helping students to build confidence that extends far beyond one subject or one test. As a teacher, it is important to me that students make fundamental and lasting progress as a result of our time together. One of my favorite things to do as a teacher is to convert students who are shy about math, into math heroes!
I am a great tutor because I am an invested teacher and remain an enthusiastic learner; I have a passion for literature and history, an interest in helping others, and a range of experiences working with many different learners.I graduated cum laude from Amherst College with a B.A. in English and History, I have my M.S. in Childhood Education and Special Education from Touro College, and I have an initial teaching certificate in New York.In addition to my personal education, my experiences in the classroom and my continued work in education have shaped me as an educator. I taught second grade for two years in south Bronx, supporting my 32 students in mastering content in all subjects, including writing, math, and reading. After that, I transitioned to a network office where I now write middle school and high school English Language Arts curriculum and assessments. While I love my current work, I am not in the classroom much anymore. I miss working directly with students, and thus am very interested in tutoring. I have a particular interest in tutoring all elementary subjects, English Language Arts, and U.S. history. While there is a time and a place for "lecture," I believe students do their best thinking when they are answering thoughtful questions both verbally and in writing. Because thinking is the crux of learning, I always strive to have student voices dominating during tutoring sessions.Tutoring sessions are short, so I believe each one should be purposeful. Each session must have a goal that is clear to both me and the student. Because learning is as much about skills acquisition as it is about content knowledge--a student does not want to need a tutor forever!-- these goals should be transferable, and feedback throughout a session should drive toward helping a student achieve that goal.
I am a freshman at Amherst College with hopes of double majoring in Computer Science and Mathematics. I recently graduated from North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham, NC. This is my first year being a tutor through Varsity Tutor so I cannot wait to start working!During high school, I took Honors Math II and III, Pre-calculus with Advanced Topics, and AP BC Calculus with Advanced Topics. I am currently enrolled in Intermediate Calculus and I plan on taking Multi-Variable Calculus next semester. In my free time, I love to watch and participate in sports and also watch Netflix. My favorite show of all time is The Walking Dead with Arrow following close behind.
Im a recent graduate of Amherst College, in Massachusetts. Im originally from Colorado, but now Ive found myself starting my life in Chicago. I double-majored in Biology and Russian (strange combination, I realize), and I also took a significant number of classes in our schools Theatre and Dance department. I love sitting down with a good book, sci-fi in particular, or just re-reading my well-worn copies of The Hunger Games or the Inheritance Cycle. My first introduction to tutoring started as volunteer work back in 2009, when I assisted my old math teacher in facilitating middle school math club. One year later, I was hired by a local Kumon center, where I worked as an education assistant for both math and reading. At the Kumon center, I worked with a variety of ages, from 3-16, on subjects ranging from basic addition and subtraction through beginning calculus, and from basic sounding out of words to interpretation of Shakespeare and beyond. I also worked as an assistant teacher at my aerial dance studio, working with the performance program for 8-13 year-olds. Once in college, I wound up working as a teaching assistant for the introductory biology lab in my sophomore year, and I worked as a peer tutor for our colleges Russian department as well. I also worked with a non-profit called Reader to Reader that paired grade-school students with a college-age reading buddy to read and discuss books. When Im not working, I enjoy doing ballet and training as a circus artist. Ive been training trapeze and aerial fabric for 7 years, and Ive been performing for 6. I also really enjoy spending time with cats, sewing, and exploring unknown cities, and not necessarily in that order.
As a teacher, my mission has always been to make scientific knowledge accessible to ALL students, and help them see why it's worth the effort to pursue. I've been a high school physics teacher for the past 15 years, and also a strong advocate for equity in science education. I received my undergraduate degree in Physics from Amherst College, and later a masters degree in Science and Math Education from UC Berkeley. While I've always had an interest in science, I've come to see myself as someone who teaches *people* rather than *science*. That is, I really enjoy helping students become more confident & independent learners, critical thinkers, and problem solvers. I feel honored to be a part of any students' growth. :)
My belief is that true learning happens when it is enjoyable. My mission as a prospective New York City teacher is to do my part in making sure the information my students receive is done so in a way that is manageable and fun. When my students show interest and progress in the content being taught, I will know I have done my job.
I am a rising sophomore at Amherst College, one of the nation's top liberal arts colleges. I am pursuing a double major in mathematics and philosophy - the combination of STEM and the humanities was a key reason why I chose Amherst and the liberal arts experience for my education. Ever since my freshman year of high school, I have been actively involved in tutoring. I have tutored elementary school students in Harlem in reading comprehension and vocabulary building; middle school students in the South Bronx in Latin and Roman mythology; high school students at my previous school in geometry, English, French, and Latin; and this year, I am tutoring a graduate student who recently immigrated to the United States in ESL and conversational English. As for my preferred subjects, I have an abundance of knowledge of and experience with college test preparation (both SAT and ACT, but especially the SAT). Because I went through the standardized testing process myself not too long ago, the top strategies and preparation methods for successful performances on these key exams are fresh on my mind. I have experience tutoring clients in the SAT and have worked with them to achieve significant improvement. All in all, I am passionate about getting to know my clients and working with them to make learning engaging using strategies that are the most effective for them individually. I am a strong believer in utilizing as many teaching methods as possible (visual, auditory, hands-on, project-based learning, etc.) to pinpoint the method that works the best for my students. I am patient, consistent, and hard-working, and I look forward to working with you toward success.
I graduated Amherst College summa cum laude with a degree in neuroscience in 2014. After graduating I completed a master's degree in biochemistry at the University of Cambridge in England. I then worked as self-employed tutor for a few months before starting a teaching fellowship in Colombia, where I taught high school English. I am currently interviewing for medical school for matriculation in August 2017.I have a variety of teaching and tutoring experiences, including working as a self-employed tutor, an organic chemistry teaching assistant, and a high school English teacher. I primarily tutor math, science, the MCAT, and Spanish. I recognize that success in school depends on study habits and techniques as much as understanding material, so I try to include as many study tips as I can in my sessions. In my free time I enjoy running, reading, and listening to music.
I've been teaching and tutoring since 2002, throughout college and grad school and while doing neuroscience research. I love tutoring one-on-one because I can get to know students and gear the lessons toward their interests, which helps them learn more quickly, retain new skills better, and enjoy the tutoring sessions more. I particularly enjoy teaching science, writing, and test prep. With test prep I've found that supplemental work on fundamental skills helps students improve their scores much more than working through a test prep book alone. Watching students develop confidence in their abilities and improve their performance makes my tutoring sessions some of the best hours of my week!
